Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 4/2/24

I didn't think they'd make the playoffs, and nothing early is making me second-guess that. But again, making any assumptions about a 162-game season based on less than a week's worth of games seems silly. They'll have better stretches where they look more competitive

Do you understand the moves we’re making? Cronin optioned, and now Amaya DFA? Whats Bendix up too?

Cronin was optioned because he's the last guy in that bullpen, worked four innings in two days, and wasn't going to be available for a gassed bullpen that needed arms. Teams make that sort of move all the time. Sucks for Cronin, but that's why you have guys with options in the 'pen (or why you want them anyway).

Bendix didn't acquire Amaya, who's been a below-average hitter in AAA and who really struggled this spring. I assume he (and the rest of the execs he's hired) simply don't like the player as much as the prior regime. And beyond that, Amaya's stock is objectively down since his original acquisition.

How many questions do you get per chat?

I don't know. A couple thousand? Depends on the time of year

How to feel about the Nats' 2024 season?

I think it's going to be an ugly one but with plenty of reason for long-term optimism thanks to Wood, Crews, House, etc. all coming up sooner than later.

But the Washington pitching staff is just bad, and it lacks depth. Josiah Gray is a massive regression candidate for me. I think they have one above-average starter (MacKenzie Gore), and he has a lengthy injury history. Cade Cavalli could help if healthy, but he'll be on an innings limit and is already on the 60-day IL while rehabbing from last March's Tommy John surgery.

Gore/Gray/Corbin/Irvin/Williams just isn't a good enough group, particularly with a suspect bullpen. They needed more pitching but basically just left the rotation unaddressed. It's going to be a long year, I think.

But ... Cavalli, Crews, Wood, House, etc. ... lots to be excited about in '25 and beyond!
And the payroll will be wide open, too

Do the Twins sign Greinke or Hill if Varland blows his first start today?

They'll take more than one start from each starter to evaluate what they have -- like all teams do. Could still try to go out and get some depth though. Jackson Wolf or sign a veteran guy like Teheran to stash in AAA, etc.
