Contract is up at season's end. A large part of the problem for the Giants is and has been, though, that they just don't have many younger players worth a look.

I mean, I'd rather have seen Slater or Williamson in Pence's spot to open the season, sure, but there's not a lot to get especially excited about in the upper minors there.

Will Mike Soroka be a factor for the Braves before the year is over?
Steve Adams
3:40
Think he'd be the youngest pitcher in MLB right now. Maybe in September or August but I doubt anytime soon.

Is Jarlin Garcia for real? Could he be a piece to build around? I need some hope
Steve Adams
3:41
I'd buy him as a back-of-the-rotation arm or a decent lefty reliever, but 12 walks and 20 K's through 27 innings isn't the most exciting thing in the world. The ERA is a mirage.

Do you buy into the early success of the Phillies or is it simply a favorable schedule thus far...
Steve Adams
3:43
There's some of both going on. Hoskins is a star in my mind, and Kingery is very, very good. As is Nola. Odubel/Williams/Altherr are all serviceable or better, lots of upside with Crawford, and Cesar Hernandez is perennially underrated. I question if they really have the pitching, but the gains from Pivetta thus far are legitimately encouraging.

Will Salvador Perez make a difference when he returns? My royals are unwatchable
Steve Adams
3:43
Of course he'll make them better. Won't make them good, but he'll make them better.

3:43
Will I ever live up to my prospect hype?
Steve Adams
3:44
At this point if he's an average regular at 2B or SS it has to be considered a victory ... I don't know that anyone really expects that he'll be a star anymore

How soon do we sell?
Steve Adams
3:46
They should've sold last summer or the summer before. They're going to push themselves into the same scenario we've seen in recent years with the Tigers, Reds and (further back) the Phillies. They've already held onto their top pieces for far too long even though it was clear they wouldn't contend. Now they're looking at an inexplicable and immovable contract for Alex Cobb after seemingly outbidding themselves, and their best pieces have been reduced to rentals -- one of whom (Britton) isn't even healthy.
I'd deal Bundy, Givens and anything that isn't nailed down this summer, but they won't. I'm not even convinced they'll sell at all.

I love ichiro as much as the next guy but isn't it time to move on?
Steve Adams
3:47
I doubt the Mariners are going to hold on for much longer unless he catches fire and strings together a few multi-hit games. I saw one of the Seattle beat writers -- Greg Johns? -- suggest that Ichiro may just be being retained to get a proper send-off at the next homestand.

Who are the Marlins still trading by the deadline?
Steve Adams
3:49
Could definitely see Realmuto in play despite reports that they'll probably wait until the offseason. Ziegler if he's pitching better, Castro, Maybin. They'll listen on Straily, I'm sure.
I'd like to see them shop Barraclough around, given the extreme price other teams are willing to pay for relief help. Might as well see if someone will give up a heap for him or even Steckenrider (though Steck has two additional years of control over Barraclough)

Josh Hader has 29Ks in 14.2IP and a .55 WHIP with a couple of 2 inning saves. Is he the best bp lefty in the game right now?
Steve Adams
3:50
If he's not the best, he's certainly among the top three or so. I wouldn't push back if you called him the best one though.

3:50
When will people start talking about Tyler Anderson as a legitimate ace for the Rockies? Best ERA at Coors
Steve Adams
3:52
When he quits walking five per nine and starts inducing grounders. There's no way he's sustaining his current ERA unless he improves his control and/or ground-ball rate. He has a 50% fly-ball rate and a 29% line-drive rate.
3:53
To only have given up three home runs with that many balls in the air is extremely fortunate. He has the lowest ground-ball rate in the Majors by seven percent. He's only induced 14 grounders all year, which is insane and makes him fun to follow ... but also quite likely to regress substantially.

Why all the Braves hate? Albies/Swanson are playing great and there are reinforcements coming (Acuna, Bautista-->Riley, pitching prospects). Are the Phillies really better over the next 2-3 years?
Steve Adams
3:54
It's not "hating" to suggest that they're vastly overperforming thus far. I don't know that the Phillies are better over the next three seasons -- Atlanta certainly has a greater volume of high-end pitching prospects -- but I think the Phillies are better right now and in 2018.

3:54
How bout i swing a colin mchugh trade
Steve Adams
3:55
He'd be a nice add to the Phillies' rotation -- or to a great number of rotations. But there's no impetus for Houston to trade him. He's a luxury in that long relief role and the first line of defense behind what feels like an inevitable DL stint for McCullers based on recent history.

Is hyun Jin Ryu finally back?
Steve Adams
3:56
He looks great right now.

But even if I buy the performance (to an extent, again ... as with Bundy before, I don't expect anyone to sustain a sub-2.00 ERA no matter how well they're throwing), I still wouldn't bet on that shoulder to hold up for 30 starts.

Does melky have a legitimate shot at playing time with the offensive struggles?
Steve Adams
3:57
He'll probably get a look at some point, but he was a league-average bat without any defensive value last season. (Hence the mid-April minor league deal.) I don't think he's going to be a big difference maker for them.

Yangervis Solarte will be the best bargain acquisition when it's all said and done. You heard it here first
Steve Adams
3:59
I loved the Solarte trade for the Jays the day it happened and said as much as the time. I thought they got him at a huge bargain rate, given his contract. San Diego must love Edward Olivares, but even if they do, the return seemed light given Solarte's versatility and affordability

Can you see the Yankees making a run at hamels at the deadline?
Steve Adams

There'll be better and more affordable pitchers available.

Really need to turn the tide and trade a player at the height of their value in Cincy? Iglesias can bring back 2 top 50 prospects?
Steve Adams
4:02
I think they should absolutely be open to trading Iglesias -- I thought the same of Suarez before they extended him. It's hard to say two "top 50" guys because the reality is that prospect rankings are in a constant state of flux. MLB.com or Baseball America would tell you that their respective Top 100s would be markedly different if drawn up today than they were back in February or March.

But Iglesias should be able to fetch at least two premium pieces and several other quality pieces. Trades aren't based on historical context in the same way that free-agent and especially arb deals are, but the Cubs gave up Torres for a Chapman rental. Iglesias should fetch a haul, but again, the Reds have never shown an inclination to move guys at peak value and routinely hold onto them too long.

Does Julio Urias help us this year?
Steve Adams
4:04
He was supposed to be out of action for at least a year at the time of the surgery in late June/early July last season. I don't think I'd bank on much from him -- they're going to be extremely cautious in easing back into the mix even once he's cleared for baseball activity
