Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 4/24/18

If the Mariners don't make the playoffs, will this be it for Dipoto?
Steve Adams
4:05
I think Servais would probably take the fall first and then maybe another year for DIpoto. The Mariners haven't been good, though I've said on many occasions that I think Dipoto is judged unfairly for blowing up an already-awful farm system in order to have some depth in the upper minors.
Which, generally speaking, isn't a bad strategy in my eyes when the system you inherit is utterly devoid of premium talent anyhow.

Should the dbacks sell high on Corbin?
Steve Adams
4:06
They're gunning for the playoffs -- no reason to get rid of Corbin, no. Hang onto him, make the qualifying offer, and take the draft pick if he signs elsewhere.

How do you pick the questions to answer? I’ve sent them and nothing answer.
Steve Adams
4:08
I try to answer one of these a chat for newcomers, so I'll go with this one today...

There are several hundred people in these chats even at the slow times of the year (e.g. April) and a few thousand in each chat at busier times (Trade deadline, Winter Meetings, etc.)
4:09
I've probably received 1,000+ questions right now -- though the software doesn't tell me exactly how many ... at any rate, there's no way to get to all of them and I don't have a good system for doing so.... it's sort of just pick one you can answer reasonably well and try, within reason, to diversify the topics as best I can. Jason Martinez will chat tomorrow night at 6:30 CT and Jeff Todd Tuesday at 2pm CT, so there'll be other opportunities

the braves are 4-2 against the phillies this year and one of those losses was in 12 innings, yet you still contend they are better - huh?
Steve Adams
4:11
Six games doesn't mean virtually anything in my eyes... if it did I'd have to be on board with the idea that Ryan Flaherty is somehow a great hitter now. Weird things happen in small samples, which is why the "best" team in baseball is not always the team that wins the World Series
Anything can happen in a small series of games.

Seems like Montreal is a standout favorite for MLB expansion, what is your choice for the second expansion city if the league grows to 32?
Steve Adams
4:12
Portland would support a team nicely, I think. I wouldn't mind seeing three teams up in Canada -- put one in Vancouver or something.

The Cardinals rotation is off to a hot start this year? Is it legit or due for regression?
Steve Adams
4:15
I think it's a pretty solid unit overall, Martinez is great but not a 1.50 ERA guy, of course, so he'll come down a bit while Weaver's numbers probably improve to balance it out. I don't have extremely high hopes for Wainwright, but they have depth with Flaherty right behind him. Wacha is a fine third or fourth starter, and I think Mikolas has been generally impressive, though I don't think he can continue to limit walks *this* well.
In general -- they're good.

How is it possible that Lowrie gets basically no love arround the league? Thought already last year he could be a solid trade chip.
Steve Adams
4:15
Yeah, I think he could've helped a lot of teams. Doesn't help that his best position, second base, is currently one of the deepest in the game. There was basically no market for Neil Walker this offseason, Kinsler was traded for a song, etc.

How long should the Royals wait before trying to trade the players signed on one-year contracts?
Steve Adams
4:16
They can't trade them without those players' consent before June 15.
But I'd start shopping them pretty much right away. May as well.

Is Patrick Corbin our real target this winter, rather than Harper or Machado?
Steve Adams
4:17
I mean, I'm sure they like him, but I thought Nightengale's column on the subject yesterday was extraordinarily premature. There were like 20 columns just like that during the season last year about how the Yankees couldn't wait to get their hands on Eric Hosmer.

Vancouver, BC please for expansion so that when the Blue Jays come to Seattle that they don't have to invade and make it unpleasant to even attend those games as a M's fan.
Steve Adams
4:18
Eh, I like how passionate Jays fans are. It was the same in Minneapolis, where I'm originally from, when I lived there. Jays fans would flock (terrible pun intended) to Target Field or the Metrodome ... makes for a fun atmosphere.

What do you think the chances are that Harvey figures things out in the bullpen? That lost velo probably isn't coming back...
Steve Adams
4:21
I wouldn't say it won't come back. Pitchers often see their velo tick up 1-2 mph (sometimes more) in moving to short stints and throwing max effort for 20 pitches rather than trying to hold up over 100 pitches. Harvey was sitting 92-93 mph in 2018 as a starter, so it's not crazy to think he could sit 94-95 in the 'pen, which would be close to his peak levels.

I don't have a ton of hope for him, honestly, just because it seems that few pitchers are able to bounce fully back from thoracic outlet -- and he had Tommy John in close proximity to that TOS procedure to make matters worse. I still think tendering him the contract this winter and taking the chance was the right call.

Cards had scouts at Tampa Sunday..Any clue there?
Steve Adams
4:22
Teams scout other teams all year long.

Which rookie do you think has the best future with us Franchy, Lucchesi or Villanueva?
Steve Adams
4:22
Flip a coin between Franchy and Lucchesi. Villanueva is behind both for me.
David
4:23
If the bottom falls out, the Mariners seem like they have some good trade chips to help rebuild a bit faster. (Segura/Gordon on "Fair" contracts, Paxton/Zunino/Diaz/Haniger on rookie deals) How bad does the team have to perform to make that an option.
Steve Adams
4:24
They're built to win now, and that'll probably be their MO as long as Dipoto is in place. If ownership decides they need to retool, I bet they get a new face to run the show
Although I, for one, would love to see a GM as active as Jerry Dipoto conduct a full-scale rebuild.
Him tearing down a roster would be an entertaining flurry to watch.

Would you send Ian Happ to AAA to get regular at bats to refocus and regain his confidence? Almora should be playing the bulk of CF right now anyway.
Steve Adams
4:26
I don't think there's any harm in it. Irregular ABs and constant struggles in the Majors aren't helping him, and the Cubs are a better team, defensively, when Almora is in CF anyway.
Roland
4:26
Any chance the Red Sox sign Sale to an extension?
Steve Adams
4:27
He already took one club-friendly deal earlier in his career. Doubt he's going to do so a second time. I guess they could just try to pay him market rate right now and throw something like $230-240MM at him if they want him to forgo free agency entirely.

Andrew Cashner has started strong. Could he have some trade value when the Orioles fold the tents?
