Blue Jays have already shown their willingness to trade at any point. Mariners are in the same boat, though they're winning as well so maybe not quite as anxious as we'd have thought a couple weeks ago. Giants (Will Smith, Sam Dyson, Tony Watson)

Have Joaquin Benoit, Aj Ramos, Matt Belisle, and/or James Shields retired?
Steve Adams
3:36
Ramos definitely has not. The other three haven't formally announced or filed paperwork, but they're all a ways up there in terms of age, so it wouldn't surprise me if they're quietly stepping away.

do you think chis sale is hurt are you concern his fast is only 91-92  could you see redsox taking a look  at dallas keuchel to be he  looks hurt
Steve Adams
3:37
Red Sox would pay a 75% tax on every dollar they spend on Keuchel. If he would theoretically agree to a one-year deal worth $20MM somewhere, he'd effectively cost the Red Sox $35MM.
So no, I don't think they'd look his way even if Sale went down.

Early reports are Lester strained a hammy... probably from legging out the double the half inning prior. Man having pitchers hit is stupid.
Steve Adams
3:38
Yeah I just saw the hamstring tightness report as well. I don't personally care for pitchers hitting, but I was raised in an American League market (Minneapolis/St. Paul).

Can I be sent to the minors to work on my control without having to go through the waiver process?
Steve Adams
3:41
Yes, technically. But because he has 5+ years of service time, he'd have to consent to be optioned. He'd also have to clear optional waivers, though that's more a formality than anything else, as those are rare and different from outright waivers (the most common type we see over the course of the year)

Steve, Bruce Bochy indicated earlier this year that he is retiring at the end of the season. Do you think Will Clark would make a good candidate to manage the 2020 SF Giants?
Steve Adams
3:42
The new Giants front office isn't going to hire someone just because they have ties to the organization. They'll hire someone young and probably inexperienced -- likely an analytically inclined rookie manager that most Giants fans have never heard of.
Scott Boras
3:43
Though I'll never admit it, it's clear that I overplayed my hand with Dallas Keuchel.  What contract expectations should I have entered the market with in order to ensure Dallas was on an opening day roster?
Steve Adams
3:45
I think they definitely overplayed the hand (though to be fair, I've thought that about Boras clients in the past and then been blown away by what they ultimately landed).

We put our Keuchel guess at 4/82 this winter. I think if they'd gone out seeking something like 5/100, settling in around 4/80 would've been possible and a team would've gone there earlier in the offseason before spending so much of its cash. Or maybe he'd have ended up somewhere like Arrieta's 3/75 if the team preferred shorter term and higher AAV (as so many do these days)

The Trout deal was a bargain for the Angels in "today's" market, but the Pujols deal, eh not so much.
Steve Adams
3:47
Everyone knew the Pujols deal would be terrible in the final few years when Moreno negotiated it. But I don't think anyone expected Pujols to decline SO quickly

Speaking of Boras, what's your take on his statement about Acuña getting “the king of the snuff contracts”? Although he has some valid points, but in the great scheme of things, it's difficult for a 21 year old to overlook an 100 million GUARANTEED contract, when a catastrophic injury can happen at any time.
Steve Adams
3:48
I think the Acuna deal is an even more hilarious bargain than the Trout deal. It's probably the most club-friendly deal in baseball now.
3:50
Giving up four free-agent years is just a staggering amount to surrender. I mean, if both of Eloy's options are picked up, he'll have given up one FA year and been paid a total of $85MM. Acuna's deal gives the Braves another three years of control at just a possible total of $39MM more. And Acuna has already proven that he's one of the best players in baseball.

Why wouldn't players want the universal DH? It means more jobs for players that cannot field. Or older players. Owners I understand because another position they need to pay but the mlbpa should be pushing hard for it to extend careers
Steve Adams
3:53
Well, a lot of pitchers like to hit. A lot of pitchers also like the idea of facing other pitchers rather than David Ortiz/Nelson Cruz or whatever position player is being cycled through the DH spot on a given day (for teams that use it rotationally).

Plus, these guys are all players but they're also fans of the game. If they grew up following NL ball, you can't blame them for wanting to preserve the brand of baseball that prompted them to fall in love with the game.

that poll is rigged. People who didn't want a poll probably aren't voting!

Once Michael A Taylor gets a few games under his belt, is he trade bait for bullpen help?
Steve Adams
3:56
I thought he might be flipped in a trade for bullpen or catching help this winter. Could still make that type of move, but his stock is down even further, I'd have to imagine, with a recent IL stint for a pair of injuries. I don't know that a contending team would weaken its pen to bring in MAT right now.

I'm hitting .324, 3 HR, 1.025 OPS - am I actually good this year? At only $4mil this season (with a $1mil buyout) will I be someone to watch as an affordable trade candidate come July?
Steve Adams
3:59
I doubt he's any better than he's been in the past. If you go through Freddy's game logs in any given season, you'll find tons of stretches where he hit .300 with a few homers for a span of 10-15 games; they just get washed away into more general mediocrity over the course of a larger sample -- as will this current hot streak. He's sitting on a .348 BABIP and a 21.4% homer-to-flyball ratio... neither of those is sustainable.

Minor leaguers I have traded the past few years: Dom Santana, Laureano, Hader, and Trent Thornton. Should I ask for a refund?
Steve Adams
4:01
(Astros president of baseball ops Jeff Luhnow)

It's kind of crazy that the 'Stros traded Laureno and Hader, got basically nothing out of the deals, and are still as good as they are. Even really good GMs make regrettable deals.

How much longer can the Padres stick with their young SP? Have to get an inning eater soon?
Steve Adams
4:02
I think if supplementing the group with an innings eater was a priority, they'd have done it this winter/spring. Hell up until a month ago they could've signed Gio Gonzalez for basically nothing more than a 40-man roster spot.
4:03
If they didn't want to give Gio like $3-4MM for a year in spring training, I don't think they're going to add anyone now.
DL or IL
4:03
Man, I miss the disabled list!  Why was the name changed?
Steve Adams
4:04
I cannot fathom why anyone would care about the change to the extent that they pine for the old terminology.
Dallas
4:05
Do the A's make sense for Dallas if he's available at discount? Have Lance Lynn + Alex Cobb last year shown that spring training is necessary for a SP?
Steve Adams
4:07
Kyle Lohse signed with the Brewers on March 26th, 2013 and gave them 200 innings of a 3.35 ERA that year. We don't even know for sure that the lack of spring caused Lynn and Cobb to struggle; neither was THAT good the preceding year and both only had one post-Tommy-John surgery under their belts.

It's possible, sure, but that's correlation rather than causation.

Yes, I think the A's make sense for Keuchel. But I think he makes sense on virtually any contending team on a one-year deal.
