Why in the world is Bubba Chandler not up yet? Is the owner afraid he might win ROY and cost them a season of control?
Steve Adams
2:02
That is the only reason I can come up with for him still being in Triple-A, yes.
2:03
I'm speculating there, same as everyone else, because they'd never say as much, but that is the only plausible excuse to me.
Cardinals not going for 10 in a row either!
They're also rained out

Split doubleheader tomorrow: first game at 1:05, second at 6:05
2:04
Really wanted to watch one of those two games. Bah. Oh well. More baseball tomorrow.

Any chance that given Houck’s struggles (understatement) the Red Sox ask Devers if he’d be willing to try pitching?                      Just funning ya!
Steve Adams
2:06
That took me way too long.
But I genuinely chuckled at the comment, ha

Is Mackenzie Gore's breakout legit, luck or a mix of both
Sandy
2:08
Am I pitching all my value away?
Steve Adams
2:10
He's definitely not helping it, but if Alcantara pitches well for even like 4-5 consecutive starts teams will probably buy back in. We've seen plenty of instances in the past of teams being willing to trade a fair bit based on a tiny sample of pitching performance. The Brewers gave up Mauricio Dubon (when he was still a pretty interesting prospect) for Drew Pomeranz based on like four relief outings after the Giants dropped him to the bullpen in July.
NL
2:10
Who would be your pick for NL Rookie of the Year right now?  Obligatory it's only May but no one has separated themselves from the field at all, and a lot of the most exciting prospects coming into the year have either really struggled (Shaw, Crews, Sasaki) or aren't up yet (Painter, Chandler).
Steve Adams
2:11
It's not a great class in the NL right now ... maybe ... Chad Patrick?
2:12
Not a lot going well for the Rox, but I can see Seth Halvorsen working his way into save opps and getting some love. Really like his arm.

Do Arenado talks reignite now that Oswaldo Cabrera broke his ankle? I sure hope not Arenado's metrics are not good. He's not hitting the ball hard.
Steve Adams
2:14
Arenado never hit the ball hard, even when he was a perennial MVP candidate. But no, Oswaldo Cabrera was not standing in the way of the Yankees pursuing Arenado.

Arenado's contract is standing in the way of the Yankees pursuing Arenado.

If the Cubs offer Tucker 550m, does he sign now?
Steve Adams
2:14
Have to think yes, but also have to think the Cubs aren't doing that.

In hindsight, do the Orioles wish they traded Coby Mayo for Crochet?
Steve Adams
2:15
I don't see how they can't be sitting here regretting their unwillingness to make a compelling offer.

Is it possible that Jac Caglianone sees any time with the big club this season?
Steve Adams
2:15
I will be stunned if he does not
2:16
At this point I'm wondering if he'll see big league time with the Royals this month.
Kansas City's outfield is so bad, and the division is very competitive, especially with the Twins surging back above .500
Cubs pitching coach
2:17
any idea who the cubs could get to shore up pitching? I think Roberson would be relatively cheap
Steve Adams
2:18
D-Rob wanted $10MM in the offseason, reportedly on a multi-year deal (I believe David O'Brien with The Athletic said the multi-year deal thing at some relatively recent point)

So yeah, Robertson could help, but I doubt the Cubs or anyone else wants to shell that out. And he's not going to be an immediate option anyhow, as he'd need to build up.

I know his velo is down but his numbers look great in minors why have the braves not called him up?
Steve Adams
2:22
He's walked 15% of his opponents and has only pitched on back-to-back days once. He's also not getting chases off the plate, and while the 27.5 K% looks nice, his raw swinging-strike rate isn't much better than average.

And yes, he's sitting 92.7 mph with his four-seamer -- down 1.2 mph from last year (which was down 2 mph from the year prior)

They might still call him up soon -- they need help -- but there's reason to temper some expectations (or to just let him keep building up in Gwinnett)
Cards
2:23
Are the Cards still sellers? I thought it would be inevitable that they dealt Helsley but now Im not so sure.
Steve Adams
2:27
The bulk of their winning streak has been against the Pirates and Nationals, but within the next month they've got the Royals (six times), Tigers, D-backs and Dodgers -- plus two more against the Phillies. So I suppose we'll see sooner than later how real or sustainable this is.

I tend to think "not very" -- but they have some undeniable bright spots. Liberatore looks good. I've loved Nootbaar for a long time and he's having a great season.

Article idea:  The next time you all do an interview with an MLB GM, can you get them to talk about how they decide to go out and trade for someone?  We fans always think, for example, "Cabrera is hurt, go trade for Arenado or someone," but clearly GMs don't think the same way.  I'd love to know how a GM processes the information -- have we already talked about Arenado or other 3B in the past, how do we feel about our prospects and organizational depth as a source of ABs and/or fodder for trades, how do we choose between "let's make do" and "let's add," etc.  Thanks!

In the name of instant gratification, Jerry Dipoto talked about this (kind of) in a recent appearance with Rob Bradford on the Baseball Isn't Boring podcast:
Rob rules.

Houck and a mid level prospect to the Marlins for Alcantara. Who says no ?
Steve Adams
2:30
If/when the Marlins trade Sandy, it'll be a volume play for several controllable prospects, not a veteran guy with the same amount of club control (albeit cheaper) and one non-elite prospect.
