Why wouldn't Bumgarner have every team on his no-trade list for "bargaining power?"
Steve Adams
3:40
The no-trade protection is bargained into his contract when it's negotiated between the team and his agent. His contract only allows him to specify eight teams to which he cannot be traded without his consent.
3:41
The extent of trade protection varies from case to case and comes with varying levels of trade-off in terms of guaranteed money, incentives, contract length, other perks, etc.

Is Pedroia done?
Steve Adams
3:44
At this point I don't know how you can expect anything from him. If he returns and is remotely productive, it's just a nice bonus for the Sox. I think moving forward he has to accept that he's going to be in more of a part-time role -- particularly if Chavis continues to absolutely rake.

Does Sandoval have any trade value?
Steve Adams
3:45
He's been a good hitter again for like 60-70 PAs and doesn't have any defensive value. I don't think any team is going to give up anything of note for him. That doesn't mean he won't be traded -- he could be flipped somewhere for cash, included along with another player or maybe even fetch some low-level warm body reliever -- but I don't think he has any trade value of note, no.

With all my pitchers on Dr James Andrews patient list, Do I give James Shields a call for a reunion?
Steve Adams
3:46
I feel like White Sox fans would just revolt at that point.
I could see Shields landing in Detroit with all the pitching injuries they've had.

When is this years draft?
Steve Adams
3:47
June 3-5
DC Troubles
3:47
Why does every reliever not named Doolittle struggle so mightily when they make it to DC?
Steve Adams
3:49
Jeff Todd is a DC-area native who follows the Nats closely, and we've talked about this at length. It is one of the most bizarre but consistent oddities in the game. If I had a real explanation for it, I'd be applying for a job with the Nationals because even they can't seem to figure it out, ha.

I do find it odd that they fired Derek Lilliquist after barely more than a year -- apparently because of his aversion (to some extent) to the use of analytics? They had to already know his thoughts on that a year ago... why make the hire in the first place then?

Has Travis Shaw turned into Wil Middlebrooks?
Steve Adams
3:52
Shaw has already done more in his career than Middlebrooks ever did, so that's not a great comparison.

He's still walking a ton, and he's actually decreased the rate at which he cases balls out of the strike zone, so it seems like his discipline is good. His contact rates have just plummeted though, which makes me wonder about his health, bat speed, etc. I think, if anything, it's good that he's still identifying strikes rather than just wildly hacking at anything near the plate. I still like him to rebound down the line.

Your website has a clear bias against certain teams. You wouldn’t let anyone comment on the Larry Baer domestic violence or Addison Russell yet Julio Urias comments are open. Hate the Dodgers much?
Steve Adams
3:54
I left the comments on the Larry Baer thing open for like an hour, tried to police them, and then decided that was a colossal waste of time. The same was true of Addison Russell. I was surprised Jeff took the time to leave the Urias thing open for comment and police all the comments within, but that was his call.

Generally speaking, if the comments are closed, it's because we're the ones who have to deal with people flagging comments, emailing in and complaining about something, etc. -- and that's just not worth it.

Worst trade in recent memory?
Steve Adams
3:56
Luke Voit for Chasen Shreve ain't looking so hot.

People always bring up the Yelich one, and with good reason, but there were more players involved in that one, and there's still more time for the Marlins to get some value out of it. St. Louis has Giovanny Gallegos still, I suppose, but that one looks pretty regrettable.

Evergreen response of Dansby/Ender/Blair for Shelby Miller will always apply as well.

does kimbrel lose comp on june 3rd?
Steve Adams
3:56
The draft runs through June 5, so I believe draft compensation for both Kimbrel and Keuchel goes away at that point -- not on the 3rd.

Will Cody Allen retake the closer role for LAA?
Steve Adams
3:57
I think he'll get another look provided he has some semblance of a rebound. They're paying him a fair bit.

Lagares and Dom to royals for Kennedy and 2 mid level prospects, Yes/No?
Steve Adams
4:00
I don't understand why some reporters are pushing this ridiculous Ian Kennedy/Dominic Smith scenario. Maybe it's something the Mets' front office is floating in the media before more closely exploring, but that's a terrible deal for the Mets.

If the best you can do for Dom Smith is Ian Kennedy and the $30MM remaining on his deal, then he doesn't have trade value.

If the Mets want Kennedy, they should be able to get him by just taking $5-10MM of that remaining salary off the Royals' hands and sending a low-level minor leaguer we'll never hear about again.

A Smith/Kennedy scenario makes zero sense. The one you presented -- adding Lagares and receiving a pair of prospects -- makes more sense for the Mets but isn't palatable for the Royals, who are trying to build up their farm not subtract from it.

Thoughts on Royals bringing up Nicky Lopez and him potentially being a super 2 arbitration player instead of waiting a week to avoid that? Is it BS him saying we dont manipulate players service time when you are a small market team? If he didnt believe in manipulating service time why was Lopez not on roster from start of season over Owings who is in the bottom of nearly all preferred offensive metrics?
Steve Adams
4:03
Lots to reply to here:

1. Lopez is more like a month away from Super Two status, so they'd have had to wait quite a bit longer than a week.

2. Lopez entered the season with 57 games above AA and had not yet hit all that well in Triple-A, so I don't think he was some clear-cut case of manipulation.

3. They paid Owings $3MM this winter. Bad investment or not, they're going to give him more than 3-4 weeks to get going at the beginning of the year.

...White Sox pitcher Banuelos leaves game due to an injured shoulder....can you command a fastball, Steve???
Steve Adams
4:03
I could neither command nor hit a fastball when I played baseball as a teenager, ha. My "career" did not last long, much to my chagrin.
worst (recent) trade
4:03
Ty Buttrey for Ian Kinsler given that BOS didn't really need a 2B and now more than ever they need bullpen help
Steve Adams
4:04
Woof, yeah -- Buttrey would be so, so important on the Red Sox right now. That one stings.
Buttrey looks *very* good.

Blevins is DFA?!?  WTF?!?
Steve Adams
4:07
Were Braves fans expecting Blevins to be a long-term solution for the rest of the season? I mean, I get having some optimism, but he's a 35-year-old pure left-on-left specialist who was acquired for cash after he couldn't get a big league deal all winter. He always seemed like more of a filler piece than a real solution there.
Worst trade ever
4:07
Shields for Tatis Jr.  I understand Tatis wasn't what he is now, but dang that looks so so bad now.....
Steve Adams
4:08
Yeah that's another bad one. I was just going for more recent deals. The Shields one was bad but didn't look like some kind of heist at the time -- more just a "Why are the White Sox acquiring any veterans -- especially this one -- right now?"

The Dansby/Ender/Miller trade was just so immediately bad, so I always include that one.
The Jeff Todd, Not Really
4:08
Jeff wrote an article on May 10 that states Kimbrel and Kuechel can sign beginning at midnight June 3 without compensation. Yes? No?
Steve Adams
4:10
I'll look through the CBA after this chat and try to figure out the exact date. I'm honestly not sure if it's the moment Draft Day arrives or the moment the Draft completes. I'd wager that Jeff researched it and I'm just going off the cuff here, ha, so probably better to trust him. I'll be sure to have a definitive answer next time I host one of these guys.
