I'm wondering why a future HOF hitter such as Miguel Cabrera values RBI so much and thinks they are very important and take a very special skill and stat geeks (that probably never played the game at a level higher than t-ball) think that they are not important?

Because Miguel Cabrera was raised to believe that RBIs are important and early in his career came into the game at a time when RBIs still got players paid.

The whole "never played the game" thing is such a tired trope. Do you tell your friends that their opinions on food don't matter because they've never been a chef at a restaurant? That they can't judge a movie because they've never written or directed one? Can't critique a book until they write a novel? Come on.
Meanwhile, ask Joey Votto if RBIs or OBP is more important. Does he count as a "geek who's never played the game'?

Glove has always been good, but his hard-contact rate is in the gutter and he's rocking a .417 BABIP while hitting two-third of his balls in play on the ground. That's not sustainable.
