Who of Mateo, Urias, and Nevin will show enough to be in my starting infield for 2023 and stave off Westburg and Henderson who will be, uh, gunning for positions at SS and 3B?
Steve Adams
2:46
None of them?

2:47
Time to cut bait on Justin Turner, or will he turn it around?
Steve Adams
2:48
Eh, he's been pretty unlucky when you consider the fact that he's made decent quality of contact, hasn't had a huge ground-ball or pop-up spike to explain the struggles, is still striking out far less than the league average, etc.
He might not rebound to 2020-21 levels, but I think he'll still be a productive hitter.

2:49
Buying or selling?  He's been pretty dang good and surprisingly consistent too.
Steve Adams
2:51
Can I buy that he's legitimately improved while also sell the idea that he's THIS good? Velo is up, switched his breaking ball usage for the better (favoring curve over slider), fewer fastballs and more changeups ... all seems to be working well and in his favor. At the same time, I don't think this level of home run prevention is sustainable and feel that there will be some adjustments made to his revamped pitch arsenal.
Have to step back again, ha, sorry. One minute. Yay children!

What do you see the Royals doing when Salvy gets back? Does Melendez DH, play another position, or only get part time treatment.
Steve Adams
2:54
I don't know why they're still rostering Carlos Santana and, particularly, Ryan O'Hearn. Jettison them both and move on.
2:55
Pratto should be up sooner than later, too. Started slowly but has been improving at the plate in Omaha.

Do you think Minasian is going to upgrade by maybe trading Adell since the current staff is pitching above their talent level?
Steve Adams
2:56
I kind of hope so if only so that the two-year run of weekly Jo Adell trade questions can be put to rest.

Taylor Ward's emergence probably makes a trade of one of the young outfielders more plausible though, in all seriousness.

have the twins giving up on Krilloff? is he available for a new scenario situation? if so, any ideas where?
Steve Adams
2:56
Why would they give up on him? His struggles are generally attributable to a wrist injury, he's still just 24, and he's raking since he returned from his wrist injury in AAA.
2:57
I expect he'll be their regular left fielder or first baseman by 2023.

Steve, can Verlander keep this up?! What an amazing story for a 39 year old coming off two missed seasons because of TJS and still rocking along. Who plays him in the movie???!!! haha
Steve Adams
3:02
Verlander looks  like... Justin Verlander. Which is kind of crazy at 39 years and 20 months off. The strikeouts and whiffs are down a bit, so I wonder if he can continue to be QUITE this good. But, then again, his velocity is also trending up as the season progresses, so who's to say the punchouts won't begin to trend back up? Strikeouts are down leaguewide as a whole, too, so it may not be realistic to expect a full rebound to his 2019-20 levels.
3:03
Verlander will be one of the most fascinating free agents on the market next year. He's said he wants to pitch until he's 45. When was the last time someone this good, with that type of goal, hit the market at this age? Never.

Will teams go to Scherzer levels to get him? Is he looking more at a two-year deal? If so, at what AAV? Could he get something like two years and $90MM total? It all hinges on the rest of his season, but it's fascinating to think about.

What is wrong with us? Why are we doing so bad?
Steve Adams
3:04
Half your roster is on the injured list, Al!

Is kelenic worth keeping any longer?. Dude looks lost even in AAA
Steve Adams
3:05
If you're in a standard 12 or 10 team league, nah. If you're in some deep 16- to 20-team keeper/dynasty format, I'd be more willing to hold.

What do the Orioles do at the trade deadline? Mancini, Santander and lyles all get shipped out?
Steve Adams
3:06
Mancini and Lyles most likely. Santander has a chance. I don't think any will net a huge return though.

3:06
Why shouldn’t Clay Holmes be given the closer role and even when Chapman returns retain it.
Steve Adams
3:07
I'd personally rather have the better reliever available in any situation rather than saved for the ninth inning. This season, that's very clearly been Holmes.

3:07
Are the Mets going to trade for a guy like mahle soon or will they just roll with the current group until max and Jake return?
Steve Adams
3:08
I don't think the Mahles and Montas-es of the world are all that available right now, though both Oakland and Cincinnati ought to just put them out there as early as possible. Why not? They're not winning anything this year and the extra month or two of control would only up the asking price.
That said, most teams tend to prefer waiting until closer to the deadline to make their bigger moves.

Can Eric Lauer keep this up?
Steve Adams
3:10
Lauer threw his first slider of the 2021 season on July 3. Since then he has a 2.32 ERA, 26.7% strikeout rate and 7.1% walk rate in 116 1/3 IP
Velocity up this year on top of that new pitch now.
3:11
Maybe he's not a low-2.00s ERA guy, but I'm a Lauer believer through and through and think he's a comfortably above-average starter now

Duvall is proving he’s not a full time CF,and the Braves are determined not to move Acuña out of RF.
Steve Adams
3:12
We didn't need this year to prove that Duvall isn't a full-time CF. The Braves' outfield heading into the season looked awful and is the main reason I was down on their chances of coming close to last year's success.

3:12
Any chance the Red Sox DFA Bobby Dalbec. He is not hitting and I'd rather try Cordero until Casas is ready.
Steve Adams
3:12
He has two option years remaining. They won't DFA him.
They'll probably option him soon if he keeps struggling though.

I’m trying to make a blockbuster trade. Would Arizona trade me Corbin Carroll, Alek Thomas, Jordan Lawler and Seth Beer for Luis Castillo, Tyler Mahle, and Matt MaClain?
