John Means trade value?
Steve Adams
3:24
Among the more valuable SPs I expect to be made somewhat available at this year's deadline. Multiple near-MLB pieces and/or top 100 type of prospects, plus several lower-level pieces.
Pumpsie Green
3:24
I am unintelligent, then, for preferring Arenado over Springer? Rarely are you this rude to anyone in your chats. Please be better, Steve.
Steve Adams
3:25
Certainly not. My intent was to say I'm not going to rip Springer as an awful signing because the narrative can change on a dime.
3:26
We also don't know whether that can be categorized as an either-or situation. We have no clue what lengths ownership was willing to go to to acquire Arenado, who was more expensive than Springer, required an extra year to be tacked in St. Louis AND required some (albeit not a ton) young talent going the other way.

Any chance the Royals would consider trading Whit Merrifield?
Steve Adams
3:27
Their GM, Dayton Moore, has said time and again in the past that even during the rebuild, he had no interest in trading Whit. Now that they're trying to win (albeit without good results in '21), I would imagine the stance is even firmer.

3:27
If youre the Jays, do you offer Semien 3/60 and hope he stays?  Or is he truly a one and done?
Steve Adams
3:27
I don't think 3/60 gets it done
Bob Loblaw
3:27
Were Twins trying to sign Buxton to an extension at any point?
Steve Adams
3:27
They've tried in the past and have yet to line up
Rays Middle Infield
3:28
are some of going to be traded this year both major and minor leaguers to try and win it all?
Steve Adams
3:28
They already traded Adames! I could see them moving Brujan or Walls, though, sure. They're not going to part with Franco.

I get the versatility thing but how much longer do we have to watch Marwin Gonzalez have no competitive AB's?
Steve Adams
3:29
I don't think the leash on him can be that much longer if he doesn't start showing positive signs of a turnaround. The contractual commitment isn't that much, and they have Hernandez and Santana on the option as utility alternatives.
Jon
3:29
No way they move Brujan!
Steve Adams
3:31
I didn't say it was likely; but if they're looking for controllable contributors at positions of lesser depth, sure they could. It won't be for any kind of short-term rental or expensive player who's already into arbitraton, but this is a Rays team that rarely makes anyone off limits. (I do think Franco is off limits)

3:31
What team am I pitching for August 1?
Steve Adams
3:31
As long as the Brewers are within striking distance of the playoffs, the Brewers. I've said before and still believe an offseason trade is much likeler.
3:32
And I do think they'll move him this winter if not this summer, because the arb price is going to go beyond their comfort level.

How long does Cherington need to make the Pirates competitive? I haven't read how long his rebuilds with Boston & Toronto took
Upton
3:32
My trade value?
Steve Adams
3:32
Upton trade value, none right now. Contract is too sizable, OBP is still in the gutter even with the uptick in power.
3:33
As for the Prates, I don't think you can compare the rebuilds for a number of reasons. The Red Sox "rebuild" was able to be done largely on the fly because they were able to spend in free agency. Cherington wasn't running the show in Toronto, so that's not a direct comp.

He's going to have no money to work with in Pittsburgh; it's going to be a different process that's much more dependent on player development and one with a much slimmer margin for error.
3:34
I don't expect anything from the Pirates in 2022 or 2023.

Top 5 players most likely to be Trade Deadline material?
Steve Adams
3:35
Generally? Like, throughout the league?

Jon Gray, Trevor Story, Mitch Haniger, Matthew Boyd, Tyler Anderson come to mind.

Will Bauer opt-out of his contract at the end of the season?
Steve Adams
3:37
If he keeps pitching at his 2020-21 levels, yeah I think so. I know he has the huge salary in '22, but he and Luba would just pursue the same type of arrangement he got this past offseason -- this time without a QO and with a larger sample of dominant innings under his belt. Plus, with more buyers on the market.

Even if he ended up on a slightly lesser guarantee... say he signed 3/95 with $39MM in '22, $40MM in '23 and a $16MM salary in '24 (similar structure to this year's deal but at a lower overall rate) ... that's still a win. He takes a slight hit in '22 but with a much larger safety net protecting him against injury or decline in '23-'24.

3:38
What type of return do you think Tyler anderson will fetch
Steve Adams
3:39
He's a one-year rental with limited track record and durability questions. I wouldn't expect a huge return. Probably a prospect or two who'll slide into the back third of the team's top 30. Really, though, getting any kind of return there is a win. I had low expectations for Anderson, he's exceeded them pretty considerably at this point.

..before the outset of the 2021 season.. speculation on trading Jose Ramirez (after Lindor) was discussed, ad nauseum.. Now that the season is underway.. it's pretty clear, the "rebuild on the fly" efforts of the Indians are going about as well as can be expected, however.. it's just not going to be enough (add in.. only one wild card, too)..Do the Indians front office revisit that Jose Ramirez to the Jays deal?
Steve Adams
3:41
Indians are five over .500 and currently tied for the second Wild Card spot. I don't think they'll trade Ramirez this summer. This winter is more possible, but that'll depend somewhat on how willing Dolan is to bring payroll back up a bit after this year's ridiculous dip.

Dunning for Lynn seems to be working out for the Sox, do they extend him?
Steve Adams
3:45
I'd say it's working out well for both parties. Dunning's last outing blew his ERA up (seven earned runs), but he's looked sharp for most of the year and can be controlled for a half decade.

If Lynn is willing to sign a shorter extension, sure the Sox should look into it, but he's 34 already. I also wonder whether he'd really be open to a short-term, reasonable deal at this point. He already had to settle for one year when he signed with the Twins, and the 3/30 he took in Texas was a relative disappointment considering where they'd hoped he would be as a free agent.

If he wants something like 3/75 or more this winter, which would be a justifiable ask, that's a pretty risky venture for the Sox.
Frank Thomas vs

Pujols. Who had best career?
Steve Adams
3:45
Pujols. Not a knock on Thomas, but Pujols.

How far out do the Reds need to be by the trade deadline to unload Castellanos?  Winker?
Steve Adams
3:46
I doubt they need to be far off at all to sell Castellanos. He can opt out at season's end, and we know ownership in Cincinnati badly wanted to cut payroll this year. If they're losing this summer, I would actually expect them to shop Castellanos.

Winker less so. He's earning just over $3MM in '21 and controlled two more years beyond '21.

Adam Frazier to Atlanta costs what?  Wright, Pache, 2 lower level prospects?
