How come nobody claimed Drew Steckenrider, I was surprised Seattle cut him.
Steve Adams
2:37
He's pitched poorly this season and has $1.93MM remaining on his contract. I didn't think anyone would claim him with the way his fastball has been hammered so far in 2022. He was solid in 2021, but the K-BB numbers weren't as dominant as the ERA might've suggested.

Has Odor become a trade chip?
Steve Adams
2:39
He has a .273 on-base percentage. I guess someone might throw some 18-year-old lottery ticket at him, but I don't see why. Then again, I couldn't (and still can't) fathom why the Yankees and now the Orioles have felt the need to roster the guy these past two seasons.

Giving Odor a Major League deal and playing him with regularity takes the cake among all of the bizarre things the Orioles have done under the current front office.

Joey Gallo to the Rangers for Glenn Otto, Ezequiel Duran and Josh Smith?
Steve Adams
2:40
Think I can confidently guess the Rangers' response to that offer.... ha

2:40
If the Cubs are serious about competing in the near future they should trade prospects for Frankie Montas
Steve Adams
2:40
I don't think the Cubs are/were serious about competing in 2022 and are only slightly more serious about competing in 2023.
Ross
2:40
Odor costs only $700k to the Orioles this year ... actually a pretty smart move by them.
Steve Adams
2:41
They could pay that $700K to someone who is a good hitter or has any possible long-term role with the club.
Longo Ria Grande
2:41
Is Kiermeiar a trade chip unless TB is knocking on the door for a playoff berth?
Steve Adams
2:42
I thought they'd trade Kiermaier this offseason and they held onto him, so at this point I think he plays out the season with them and has his 2023 option declined.
Ross
2:43
Judge for $300mil for 10 years ... would he take it, if offered today
Steve Adams
2:46
Setting aside the fat that the Yankees wouldn't offer 10 years because that'd run through his age-41 season, a $300MM guarantee at this point, I have to imagine, would be hard to turn down. So while 10/300 is maybe heavy in terms of length, if he were offered 8/300 ($37.5MM annually) it'd be seen as commensurate with (well... better than) the top AAVs of other position players in the league.

Read an article that suggested a trade of Hassell III for Benentendi. Preller couldn’t be that clueless...
Steve Adams
2:47
Was the article written by someone whose byline read "Totally, 100% not Royals president Dayton Moore ... seriously, it's not me, guys... but hear me out"?

What does AAV stand for ?

2:48
Why don’t I have any say in who manages my team
Steve Adams
2:49
Rick doesn't own the team. Jerry Reinsdorf cuts the checks. Not the first time an owner has gone over his GM's head regarding the manager (or regarding plenty of other things). Just ask Arte Moreno and Jerry Dipoto.
cant spell sad without A’s

does elvis andrus have any market? if they eat his salary could it be like a buying a lottery ticket type guy or maybe someone who could be on a roster crunch that would be more useful in oakland?
Steve Adams
2:53
I don't see much value there, and I have an even harder time seeing the A's eat a meaningful chunk of his salary. I suppose if it means saving even $1MM, they'd be happy to get it done, but the return there is negligible -- if there's a return at all. Especially since Andrus' option vests as a player option if he's traded and hits 550 PA:

Contreras for Jo Adell?
Steve Adams

Angels aren't giving Adell for two months of Contreras

when does the monster package for Montas happen? and what do you see him going for?
Steve Adams
2:55
The Twins got a Top 50 prospect (Austin Martin) and a well-regarded secondary pitching prospect for Jose Berrios in a similar situation last year (similar in terms of remaining team control -- 1.5 years).

I think Montas is better, though Berrios' durability and status as a bankable source of 180-200 IP carried weight, and Frankie doesn't have that
Chris
2:56
He's cooled off a lot since that torrid April, do you think Rizzo is still a likely opt out and if so, whats a ballpark number for resigning him?
Steve Adams
2:57
At this point, I don't consider it likely that he opts out.
2:58
Could always get it going, but he had like an 80 wRC+ over his past 160ish PAs when I was looking yesterday. The market isn't going to be kind to him as it stands. Even with a good season, I think another two-year deal would feel likeliest.
3:00
We predicted three years at $15-17MM for our Top 50 predictions this offseason even though Tim, Anthony and I all agreed that was a huge overpay and that no one should do it. We expected someone to overbid based on the whole "good guy clubhouse leader ultra intangible" aspect of Rizzo's profile, and it didn't happen. I wish we'd stuck to our actual feelings and predicted the two-year deal we thought was more reasonable. Alas.

Steve, this was supposed to be the year it all came together …… I went out and signed a cy young winner, traded for an all star and also a huge bat and let some kids play and so far my nothing has worked out the cy young winner has struggled, winker has struggled Kelenic struggled so bad he got sent back to the minors where he continues to swing and miss, is this season already a bust? Is there any hopes for long suffering ms fans?
Steve Adams
3:03
It's my fault because I wrote something right before their record tanked about how the Mariners had arrived. Sorry, Jerry.

Realistically, though, they're only five back of a Wild Card spot. Robbie Ray has looked better with the new sinker he debuted a couple starts ago. Kelenic's overall K% in AAA is bad, but he's hitting .338/.386/.677 with only a 22% strikeout rate over his past 2-3 weeks. Abraham Toro has been one of the unluckiest hitters in MLB. I believe Winker will turn it around
3:04
I felt they should've done more with the offseason after the lockout... adding Winker/Suarez was kind of a..... "...Wait, that's it?" moment with all the big designs we'd seen kicked around. Frazier always felt a little weird to me, even if the cost was low.

But, I also don't think the team is as bad as it's been, and I think they'll be in the Wild Card mix by year's end.

Did I dodge a bullet in not re-signing Bryant, Baez and Rizzo? I know Rizzo's starting to come around a bit, but for the most part, their deals have not provided any value for their respective teams.
Steve Adams
3:07
Yeah. The decision not to re-sign those guys was always defensible, but the fact that those decisions came amid the Cubs, of all teams, publicly crying poor and practically sitting out free agency for two years along the way just felt like a slap in the face to their fans.

I still think for 2/32, bringing Rizzo back would've been generally fine and maybe a nice olive branch, but the Baez and KB deals looked like landmines to me from the jump.

Hey Steve, longtime fan, first time poster. The NL central is a joke and the Cardinals have a chance to win it with the odd mix of rookies and veterans. They desperately need help with starting rotation and I’m worried that JF is being rushed back by his start tomorrow. Does Paul Dejong have any real trade value now that he is smashing balls in AAA? There’s not really room for him anymore and we need pitching help. Thank you!
Steve Adams
3:12
Agreed that they could use some pitching help, but they're not going to achieve it by trading DeJong. The contract is still negative value, even with him hitting decently in AAA (and I do mean only decently... the power is nice, but he's hitting .245 with a .295 OBP).

That said, there are so many rental arms available who'd represent upgrades and help them patch things over until 2023, when Liberatore has more experience and can be relied upon more. (Ditto Thompson)

I know Cardinals fans really want Montas -- who wouldn't? -- but the defense is so good that they don't NEED to get the top SP on the market.

With the Lewis injury think Carlos would be open to a 8-280 new contract with the Twins, then move Lewis to 3rd when he gets back next yr?
