Poor defensive backstop who hasn't hit at all since the first week of the season. Someone probably signs him still, but it'll be as a backup and on a short leash. Cubs and Red Sox could use some help with the injuries they've had (Plawecki is IL-bound, per Chris Cotilllo), but the glove is real bad and we're talking about a guy with a .238 OBP in 120 PAs this year. A lot of teams are just going to take a hard pass.

Would I be a good fit for the Yankees?
Steve Adams
3:00
Sure, but he's also a good fit for the White Sox, Mets, Indians, Cubs, Cardinals, etc.
Col. Mustard

Is Kyle Gibson really good or really lucky?
Steve Adams
3:03
He can be both! I think Gibson is pretty underrated and plenty capable of prolonged stretches of excellence. He had some really nice 10- or 15-start runs in Minnesota, but they were always sandwiched between some rough outings. He's very slider dependent and doesn't have the big putaway pitch if that offering isn't working for him at a given time.

He's also not going to sustain a .230  BABIP or whatever he's presently at, however.

Benentendi to the Yankees? Does that make sense?
Steve Adams
3:05
I don't think so -- Royals traded for him for a reason and will want him into 2022. Plus he's making enough money that the Yankees would  need to ditch a couple million to stay under the tax line if they got him (or convince the Royals to pay his remaining salary).

Who is the first Twins player to get shipped out?
Steve Adams
3:06
If they sell, one of the pitchers on an expiring deal... Hansel Robles, maybe Michael Pineda. They're going to see how the upcoming gauntlet of AL Central games plays out though.
Odd Year Giants
3:06
Chances of Bauer opting out after this year?
Steve Adams
3:07
Probably took a hit with the crackdown on foreign substances. I thought he would heading into the season, so long as he pitched well.

If he still puts up elite numbers, he'll opt out because he can get a larger guarantee overall, even with the frontloaded number in 2022, but we'll have to see how the next several months play out.
3:08
I hate putting numbers on that sort of thing since it's purely arbitrary and no one knows. If you want me to make one up off the cuff though ...... 40%?

Most likely Pirate to be traded Frazier or Rodriguez?
Steve Adams
3:08
I think they'll both go, but Frazier has less control so he's likelier. Tyler Anderson might be the most likely of them all, since he's a free agent at season's end.

If you were the Cardinals GM and made the decision to be a buyer at the deadline, who are you eyeing as a realistic upgrade for the rotation?
Steve Adams
3:09
Kyle Gibson
Controlled into 2022, which is a huge benefit for them with Wainwright and Kim hitting the market at season's end. Ground-ball pitcher, which works well with their excellent infield defense. Contract not so large that it eats up huge payroll this year or next -- leaving flexibility for other moves.

What could the Orioles get for Cedric Mullins? Been one of the best players in baseball and controlled for 4 more seasons. Someone teams would pay a huge bounty for, or still too early to tell if this is real and worth paying for?
Steve Adams
3:12
I think they'd get a haul for him if they actually moved him. Multiple top prospects and/or controllable (five-plus years) MLB guys. I didn't pay him much heed through the first few weeks but am buying the breakout much more now. I don't think the Orioles will do it, but he's the kind of guy who could be one of those surprise buzzer-beater trades. Astros/Yankees both badly need CFs but are loath to exceed the luxury tax. Astros would be likelier there just because trading Mullins to the Yankees would be a kick in the gut for O's fans.
3:14
I have a hard time seeing it actually happen, but the O's could choose to look at this as basically a free windfall. Mullins' value over the winter and on Opening Day was a fraction of what it is now.

Would the brewers bring me back at first base second half of the season?  I can Still hit
Steve Adams
3:15
He's said multiple times he's happy not playing

Jim Crane has shown a willingness to make the big move at the deadline several times. Will he do it again with the Astros looking really good? Richard Rodriguez? Starling Marte?
Steve Adams
3:16
If he does it, I think a Richard Rodriguez type makes sense. The 'Stros bent over backwards to avoid the luxury tax this winter. I expect that staying south of the $210MM mark is still Crane's preference. RichRod or the aforementioned Mullins scenario -- something along those lines could give a big upgrade without really adding to the tax line.

What do the Asros or Yankees have to offer the Orioles their farm systems are not goods.
Steve Adams
3:18
Even weak farm systems still have talent, and there are guys who pop up over the course of a season in any given year. Plus the Yankees' system isn't "bad" -- it's just more middle of the road.

What trade should the Jays make? I’d personally like a 3B and SP. Moose/Gray or something similar
Steve Adams
3:20
Moustakas just moved to the 60-day injured list. I do think they should target rotation help, but their GM, Ross Atkins, plainly said over the weekend that bullpen help is the focus. Of course there's room to do both. If you want a combo deal that swings for the fences as you sort of did there, why not try to pry away Zac Gallen along with the much more available Eduardo Escobar? D-backs have to be open to just about anything, and the Jays have a deep/excellent farm system.

3:21
Giants bullpen is maddening...is Rodriguez the best closer possibly on the market?  SF has a back log of decent OF's and some younger arms on the Farm.  What would it take?
Steve Adams
3:22
I don't think Rodriguez is the "best" relief pitcher on the market, no, but he's the best combination of effective, cheap and controllable.

That doesn't all matter as much for the Giants as it does for some other clubs. They'd do well to go after any of the high-profile rental options out there: Ian Kennedy, Kendall Graveman, Yimi Garcia, Raisel Iglesias.
Yimi has ties to the Dodgers/Zaidi.

3:22
Are there any substantial rumblings about potentials Jays acquisitions
Steve Adams
3:23
There aren't many substantial rumors or reports about anything yet. Most clubs are going to wait until after the All-Star break to really make decisions.

Nelson Cruz to the Rays...or do the Twins think they can crawl back into the wc?
Steve Adams
3:24
If the Twins are still buried with a few days until the deadline, I would expect one of the A's, Rays or Jays to make a decent offer for Nellie.
Jerry Dipoto
3:24
If Mariners are still in race at the trade deadline do I make a significant trade or do I stay the course with the rebuild and hold tight?
Steve Adams
3:26
If the Mariners are contending, they can do both. There are controllable players who'll be made available. I doubt Dipoto trades away talent for rentals, but if you start talking about players controlled into 2023, why not? German Marquez, Spencer Turnbull -- go ahead and get aggressive.

I think it's ultimately likelier that they slide back and sell off a few more short-term parts, but if they're three back in the West and one or two back of a Wild Card spot or something, hey. Sure.
Halos are sellers
3:26
Angels have to be sellers right Steve?
Steve Adams
3:27
I think they're likely to be, but outside of the Rockies, D-backs, Orioles, Pirates, Tigers ... I don't know that I view any team as a "HAVE TO" sell. Most of the Angels' assets aren't going to command huge returns anyhow.

3:28
Should the A's take a shot at a Soler rebound? I know he has struggled but he hits the ball hard.
