If they're giving up a PTBNL or something and the Royals eat all but like a million bucks, I guess. But there are plenty more appealing options if they want a DH bat.
Morton
3:29
Charlie Morton doesn't have a no-trade clause. If the Braves are clearly out of it at the deadline he gets moved to a contender, right?
Steve Adams
3:30
That'd depend on what he wanted. The Braves signed him knowing he was limiting himself geographically. I doubt they'd just trade him to a random team without consulting with him. That would be a pretty rough look for the front office and one that future free agents would take note of.

Saw a proposal of Berries to the Cubs for Ryan Jensen, Cole Roederer and Luke Little (Cubs' 7th, 12th, and 28th-ish prospects). I would absolutely make that deal which probably means it's a little light, right?
Steve Adams
3:32
Yeah I think that is way light for Jose Berrios.

More impressive...Ohtani or DeGroom?
Steve Adams
3:33
I'm consistently impressed by everything both do and feel little need to rank them. But that doesn't mean you guys can't!
More impressive: Ohtani or deGrom?

When are we going to trade for an outfielder? Marte, Marte, Haniger, Blackman?
Steve Adams
3:36
Charlie Blackmon has negative trade value and shouldn't be lumped in with the others. I generally don't expect major moves for any clubs until the middle of next month. There will be a handful of exceptions, but pinpointing who they'll be is just guesswork. Sox have a two-game lead over Cleveland, and the Indians' rotation is at this point a collection of shrug emojis. I understand the urgency, but I think the front office is probably feeling less dire than fans.

Still think they should be the team to get Adam Frazier, for what it's worth.

Do I have any trade value with my contract?
Steve Adams
3:37
Nope

3:37
Hello. What teams (which Top 5) will be most aggressive before the Trade Deadline? Even reluctantly trading some top prospects
Steve Adams
3:38
My expectation (no particular order): White Sox, Mets, Padres, Giants, Cardinals.
3:39
Blue Jays, too.

Do you think cubs will buy big ?
Steve Adams
3:40
I think they'll make measured, incremental improvements if they're in the race and sell off some huge names (Bryant) if they fall even a decent ways back (4-6 games).
Greg Brown
3:41
Is it too early to tell if the Pirates development strategy is improving? I’m mainly concerned about Mitch Keller’s performance.
Steve Adams
3:42
I don't think you can look at any one pitcher as emblematic of the entire new regime's competency. Keller's struggles are concerning, and you're right to be concerned, but the Bucs also have JT Brubaker pretty handily exceeding expectations. I liked him to step in as a decent fourth/fifth starter, but he's looked better than that so far.
Starter?
3:43
How do the mets fill this starting pitching mess. they can't piecemeal with the hope of Noah or Carassco being of any particular value right?
Steve Adams
3:43
Have to add a solid mid-rotation upgrade and then just consider whatever you get from Thor/Cookie to be a bonus.

3:43
Will we ever see (regular) draft picks become tradable? Seems like a great way to accelerate rebuilds and allow small market teams to develop talent and become competitive.
Steve Adams
3:44
I think so. It should be on the table in this next wave of CBA talks, but I'm never going to assume the league and union will actually agree on anything.

Agree that the Orioles are a "must sell" team at or before the deadline.  But, it would be really hard for them to deal either Mullins or Means - in the sense that they are both young enough to be part of the next good team and it would be a real kick in the gut for their fans, also known as paying customers.  So, who, in addition to Mancini (another gut punch), could they get anything for?
Steve Adams
3:46
Yeah, it's particularly tough with Mullins. With Means, if he were healthy, you could say he's a little older, pitchers break more easily, etc. -- and you could also probably ask for a larger return.

O's could still get a low-level lotto ticket for Galvis, and Anthony Franco and I both agree that Paul Fry is a pretty under-the-radar trade commodity for Baltimore. Santander isn't playing well enough and has been hurt, but if he rights the ship in the next few weeks you could put him in the conversation, too.
3:47
Cole Sulser would have value, too.
Jeffro
3:47
Do the Royals have anyone, outside of Perez and Merrifield, that is looked at as a tradable candidate.
Steve Adams
3:47
I don't think either Sal Perez or Whit Merrifield is a trade candidate.
Joshua
3:47
If, and I know it's a big IF, but if the Nats do become sellers what type of package do you think they could get in return for Schwarber? Thanks.
Steve Adams
3:50
Not too much of note. He's on a $10MM salary with minimal defensive value. Five homers in the past two games is fun, but teams know who/what he is -- great clubhouse guy, questionable range, big power, some platoon issues, etc.

We see rental sluggers get moved all the time, and it's usually not for anything of particular note. Schwarber now wouldn't be entirely dissimilar to say, Jay Bruce in 2017. Cleveland traded Ryder Ryan to the Mets to get him. Ryan topped out ranking as the Mets' #20 prospect and is now in the Rangers' system.

Teams don't spend much on corner-only bats with defensive questions at this point.
JBJ jr.
3:51
Could the Brewers trade JBJ back to the BoSox in any scenario ? Fan favorite back in Fenway..
Steve Adams
3:51
Bradley signed in Milwaukee because the Red Sox didn't want to pay the luxury tax to keep him. They're not going to cross the tax line to acquire him now that he's struggling to such great extents.

I want to say give Rick Porcello another Mets shot, but I can not stomach it.
Steve Adams
3:52
I feel like if Rick Porcello wanted to sign somewhere, he'd have signed.
3:53
He and his agents have kept quiet and haven't given any updates on him. But if this was a guy seeking a contract, they'd be out there touting upcoming showcases and all that.
Jon Heyman
3:53
I reported today that Jose Berrios would be a good fit for the Yankees.  What do you think?
Steve Adams
3:53
Jose Berrios would be a good fit for any team.
3:55
Not a knock on Heyman, but I don't understand why pointing out someone is a "good fit" somewhere carries much weight. Berrios is a good pitcher controlled through 2022. Any team that needs rotation help would be over the moon to acquire him. But the asking price would be sky-high, and the Twins aren't going to tear it down to the studs even if they sell pieces. They'll still want to contend in 2022.
