Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 6/30/20

There are so many records that have no chance at being broken just because the game has changed so much. I don't think anyone will ever get to Cy Young's 511 wins though -- that's easily the least attainable.

Ripken's ironman streak is next up since playing that many consecutive games is probably an actual detriment to the team -- you're playing through a LOT of injuries -- and I don't think teams would allow anyone to do it.

Should I be scared that the blue Jay's havnt signed Martin yet?
Steve Adams
6:30
Nope

I don't see a shortened season as a reason to slap asterisks on the Champ and the piece of metal that they win....  you?
Steve Adams
6:32
No. That would only apply if you somehow equated the World Series winner every year with the best team in MLB, but we know that's not the case.

The 1987 Twins won 85 games!

Anyone else you see opting out?
Steve Adams
6:33
I'm sure quite a few more players will opt out. I don't know which specific ones, of course. I know Sean Doolittle has been outspoken on the issue, I guess, but I'm not going to presume anything one way or another. It's an extremely personal and difficult decision for all of these guys.

Why are so many teams going to use a six man rotation this year?
Steve Adams
6:34
A combination of wanting to be able to evaluate young guys and also to manage workloads and add extra rest early in the year. Pitchers are only going to have three weeks to build up. They're not going to be ready to go out and rattle off seven innings and 110 pitches.

any preliminary looks at an actual 2020 mlb schedule?
Steve Adams
6:35
Nope -- the Blue Jays are still trying to figure out where they're playing home games!

I'd imagine we'll get some clarity on schedule within the next week.
Barney

The 2006 Cardinals won 83 games.
Steve Adams
6:36
Forgot about that one. Thanks!

Holy cow a trade
6:38
Jorge Mateo to the Padres, per Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel at ESPN

Could the Rockies end up in second
Steve Adams
6:43
I think any team can overperform/"get hot" for a few weeks, and in a season like this that could get them into second place territory, I suppose. But I think the Rockies are miles behind the Dodgers and worse than the D-backs and Padres as well. I certainly wouldn't bet on it.

First trade of the "season", and it doesn't involve the Mariners. Strange times we live in.
Steve Adams
6:44
Could still be a three-team deal with the Mariners involved -- you're talking about Jerry Dipoto after all.
Playoffs?!
6:45
Heard theres still some hope for expanded playoffs. Give me some hope for it? Whats the chance?
Steve Adams
6:45
MLB and the MLBPA would need to negotiate an agreement. Don't hold your breath, haha.
But Tony Clark did say he's open to talking if the league wants to, so can't 100% rule it out

How will vesting options work?  ( I.E Happ 165 inns)
Steve Adams
6:46
The league and union are negotiating that right now
Braves
6:47
Chris Johnson?
Steve Adams
6:47
(This was in reference to my asking when the last time someone even hit .375 a couple months into a season)
6:48
Even in Johnson's BABIP-mania season where he somehow hit .321, his average dipped below .350 on May 3 and didn't go back above that mark.

I'm going to the Padres? Hmmm. Can I make the team?
Steve Adams
6:49
He pretty much has to. He's out of minor league options.

Tell us more about the trade!
Steve Adams
6:51
It's Mateo for a PTBNL. Padres had an open 40-man spot. That's about it, haha. Will write up more details on Mateo and how he fits into San Diego, etc. in the post after the chat.

I feel like the answer to your question was Tony Gwynn in '94...
Steve Adams
6:51
It was a rhetorical question -- was just saying ... No I don't think a short season means we'll see anyone hitting .400
6:52
Also I just thought of the most amusing example of that
2001 Doug Mientkiewicz was hitting .403 on May 22 as the Twins' regular first baseman, ha.

Detmers ahead of Patrick Sandoval for 6th spot in rotation?
Steve Adams
6:54
Nah -- I'm sure they're just planning to get a look at him early. Can't imagine he's in the mix for an Opening Day rotation spot like 6 weeks after being drafted

Is there a path to large deadline trades? Or is it more likely we wait until the offseason to see anything of any more happen?
