O/U 2.5 players traded by the Rockies this deadline
Steve Adams
1:35
I will (probably foolishly) take the over and predict Beeks, one of Quantrill/Gomber and one of Diaz/Stallings/Rodgers gets moved. I think they should listen on Marquez too, but he's a Monfort favorite and probably staying put.

After the disaster last year, do you think the Orioles would have any interest in re-acquiring Jack Flaherty?
Steve Adams
1:36
I think they'll look elsewhere. Can't recall a team trading for someone, not getting what they hoped, and then going back to the well a second time.

Am I a Cardinal on August 1?
Steve Adams
1:38
Yup

1:38
shouldnt the tigers be able to name their price - as in Jackson Holliday (spelling might be off) as a starting point?
Steve Adams
1:38
Sure, they can try to do that. And then the other team will probably say, "Ok no thanks."

Austin Hays for Nick Lodolo?
Steve Adams
1:39
Zero chance the Reds do that

Can Estevez bring back a top-100? Would Ward, Anderson, or Garcia get anything near that either?
Steve Adams
1:42
There's an undue amount of focus placed on top-100 lists this time of year. I understand it and I contribute to it sometimes by suggesting that that type of player is available in return for Trade Candidate X, I suppose. I think it's worth emphasizing that top-100 lists are in a constant state of flux. They're snapshots in time. If you asked the Baseball America team to do a Top-100 list on June 1 and July 15, they'd be different, perhaps dramatically so -- and that's not even including the new draftees. Also of note that the gap between "Prospect #100" and "Prospect #130" probably isn't all that big.

Preamble aside, I tend to think of "top-100" as someone who's a 50 FV (future value, on the 20-80 scale) or better. I don't think Estevez alone is going to command a 50 -- none of that group would for me, save for maybe Ward -- but Estevez+Ward or Estevez+Anderson could get interesting (if the Angels eat a bunch of Anderson's deal)

Does Andrew Vaughn have much value? Seems like he broke his slump to start the season
Steve Adams
1:45
He's in his fourth big league season and has a league-average career batting line (below average this season) with little to no defensive value. I never understood why various reporters kept listing him as a White Sox untouchable in prior trade scenarios with the A's (during Oakland's fire sale), and his value is only lower now. I don't think there's much value there.

Maybe someone wants to buy low on the interesting batted-ball metrics, but Vaughn has been a replacement-level player to this point in his career.
Dbacks
1:46
Do you see Deyvision De Los Santos getting the call post as break? If minor league mumbers are very impressive even for the pcl...seems like they could find room for that bat.
Steve Adams
1:47
Yeah he has to get a look after the break at some point. I don't love the lack of discipline and think he's at best a low-average slugger with a .280-.300ish OBP, but that doesn't mean he can't be a useful hitter. 27 homers in 350 PAs is hard to ignore
Teo Extension
1:47
Teo has been a tremendous add for the Dodgers outfield. Any chance they extend him before the end of the year?
Steve Adams
1:51
I could see it, though a deal after the season is probably more likely. He's trending toward  a QO right now -- didn't get one last year -- so the Dodgers could make him a QO then try to work out some kind of high-AAV three-year deal to keep him.

I think it's likelier that he ends up elsewhere, because I'll almost always bet on the field over returning to a set team and because the Dodgers would need to commit to him playing in the field regularly into his age-34 season at least (Ohtani has DH locked up). But it's hardly outside the realm of possibility that they sign him -- especially if he's willing to sign for like 60-70 over three years (Ian Happ-ish kind of money)

The Twins and White Sox match up very well on a Crochet deal. Is them being in the division a complete non starter?
Steve Adams
1:53
It's generally best to just assume both parties prefer not to be haunted by that type of trade for years to come. White Sox don't want to watch Crochet carve them up in 2026. Twins don't want to watch Brooks Lee or Emmanuel Rodriguez or Walker Jenkins or whoever beating up on them for six/seven years somewhere down the road.

The last trade of any note I can remember those two teams making was Francisco Liriano for Eduardo Escobar and Pedro Hernandez, which I inexplicably remember off the top of my head because apparently I am a sicko.

The Tigers won series from 2 division leaders(Guardians and Dodgers) last week and  are red-hot. Should they hold on to Flaherty and become buyers instead of sellers and maybe get bullpen help for a run at a wild card?
Steve Adams
1:54
They have 9 games against MIN/CLE between now and July 30
The answer to that question is almost entirely up to the players themselves.

Hello. Will my guardians get pitcher(start) and right handed bat? Thank you.
Steve Adams
1:54
I'd be pretty shocked if Cleveland doesn't add one starter, which is a wild sentence for an organization that never has to go outside for SP help

First round pick you likes the most and least?
Steve Adams
1:56
I've gotten about 200 of these so I'll just say that I am not paid to cover the draft nor do I have strong opinions on the picks in question. It's not a key focus for me. I don't spend time texting scouts, team sources etc. on draft-related things. It's not a big focus for MLBTR -- at least not until MLB finally starts letting teams trade picks! Ha.

I lean no but have come around on the idea being more possible than if you'd asked me that back in May
Pirates

Are we a true playoff contender? We’re only a couple games out of a WC slot…
Steve Adams
1:59
I think they're a playoff contender in the sense that Skenes/Jones/Keller would be dangerous in any short series. Getting there is the bigger issue. They could use offensive help at multiple spots. I would love to see them go for it and add a bat with some control left (go wild and try to pry Robert from the White Sox), but I can understand Bucs fans bemoaning the possibility of Chris Archer 2.0

Kansas City keeps talking about adding bats, are they looking at an outfielder or a third baseman? They’ve played Garcia at second some and could move Massey to DH with his back problems.
Steve Adams
2:02
I think they're focused less on one specific position than just on adding a quality bat, ideally one with some versatility. (Picollo said as much last month)

I also wouldn't be surprised if, in the interim, they rolled the dice on a Merrifield reunion. Vintage Merrifield is pretty much exactly what they're looking for

Do you think the Nationals trade Finnegan?

I do

Pirates and JJ Bleday chatter? Makes so much sense for the Bucs.
Steve Adams
2:05
It does make sense for them, but Bleday has four years of control left as well so the asking price would be pretty substantial. (The mere fact that I'm able to type that is a win for the A's, given how mediocre Bleday was in '23).

You could basically take any productive, controllable OF and say it makes so much sense for the Pirates. They badly need help out there.

The big question for Boston fans is if ownership cares. Fans feel like they need to buy but have we heard anything regarding Boston's stance and if they are buying, who would some targets be?
Steve Adams
2:09
It's a fair concern with how they've operated recently, with Werner's boneheaded "full throttle" comments, with John Henry repeatedly refusing to talk to any media about the team, etc.

Chisholm would look nice there since 2B has been a black hole offensively. Adding some SP depth is vital, for me. Houck and Crawford are going to be coming up on career-high workloads (or already are). Criswell doesn't inspire tons of confidence. The depth in the event of an injury isn't great. Etc.

You can head to our Top 50 list last week and check out the majority of SPs on there -- they pretty much all work to varying extents
