Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 7/23/24

What would you anticipate Frankie Montas and/or Nick Martinez would fetch in a trade?
Steve Adams
3:28
Martinez, marginal return. Again, the opt-out is a killer for trade value.

I don't think Montas is going to bring back that much more, honestly. He's pitched ... fine. But he hasn't looked at all like the No. 2 type of starter he was prior to shoulder surgery, and his $16MM is hardly cheap. He'll have $5.333MM remaining on deadline day.

Montas seems like he could get you a couple 40 FV prospects. Martinez probably less because of the player option.

What would it take for the Astros the land Isaac Paredes? Do they have anything TB might be interested in?
Steve Adams
3:32
We talked a little about this on the podcast. Paredes is so good, so versatile and so controllable that I think he'd low-key require one of the biggest packages of any "available" player at the deadline. He's up there with Robert/Crochet types of trade value, for me. I don't know what that looks like from Houston, where the farm is pretty thin. Jacob Melton, Jake Bloss, Joey Loperfido? Honestly not sure I'd do that even. Paredes is awesome, he's making $3.4MM, and he's controllable three seasons after the current year.

Are the Tigers sellers?   They have been playing really well.
Steve Adams
3:32
They have been! I still expect them to sell, yes, but if they want to convince the front office otherwise, they have every opportunity to do so over the next week. All of their remaining pre-deadline games are against the Twins and Guardians.

I see the Rays as 49,000-to-1 to win the ALE... worthy of a $20 bill, right?  Talk me out of it I guess, Steve...
Steve Adams
3:34
At 49,000-to-1, I'd put $20 on the White Sox to win the 2025 World Series. Sure. Let's go. (...but not the 2024, ha)

Will the Giants trade Blake Snell?
Steve Adams
3:35
See former comments about the difficulty of trading opt-out players. I highly doubt it, no.

What do the Royals do at the deadline?
Steve Adams
3:36
They badly need to add an outfield bat. Jazz, Ward, Arozarena, Rooker ... even if they just like, rent Jesse Winker for a couple months, they need something to add some life to the outfield.

Probably another reliever, too.

Do you think the Red Sox will deal Jensen?
Steve Adams
3:36
I don't

3:36
Just curious, do you pick a bunch of questions that were submitted early, or do you mostly check new ones that come in during chat?
Steve Adams
3:36
I try to do both

Chisholm to Pittsburgh for Chandler and Johnson?
Steve Adams
3:37
Too much for the Bucs to give up (assuming you're talking Termarr Johnson)

Herrera and Carlson for Rooker.  Who hangs up?
Steve Adams
3:38
Not close to enough for Rooker
Help.

I'm a very optimistic person.. but even I'm having a hard time having faith in the Mariners. Sounds like not a lot of hitters available with so many teams expected to be buyers (Dipoto doesn't usually go for the obvious players, aka Vlad, but usually the unexpected players). Who are some players you'd like/expect Jerry to go after?
Steve Adams
3:39
Mariners are in a great position to line up with the Rays again. Arozarena and Paredes both check many boxes in Seattle. The two teams trade all the time, so maybe a lazy pick, ha, but easy to see a foundation of something there.

What do the Giants have to do at the deadline to sneak into a wild card spot?
Steve Adams
3:44
Get healthy? That's such a boring answer, but it's true. Robbie Ray, Alex Cobb and a revitalized Blake Snell gives them a much different feel. I'd like to see them get a better shortstop but the options aren't plentiful. Could go the utility route and just spring for a Rengifo type (not that you want him playing SS with any regularity). A backup catcher who can hit more than Casali and a backup OF who can hit more than Matos would also prove beneficial.

But by and large, the Giants are in a better spot than I thought they'd be... which I suppose speaks to the fact that I was not bullish on their chances heading into the season, ha. Good on them. Patrick Bailey is fantastic, and Heliot Ramos has been a great surprise.

What kind of package would it take to acquire Guerrero?  More specifically from the Cubs
Steve Adams
3:44
In general, I don't think depleting the farm to acquire one year of Vlad aligns with Hoyer's recent comments all that well.

Will Rich Hill play this season?
Steve Adams
3:45
He's said for months now that he'd probably sign in the season's second half

Why did they DFA Paxton?  Seems like something MLBTR would want to find out.
Steve Adams
3:47
I don't think they considered him one of their best options down the stretch and probably felt they could extract some modest value on him on the trade market. He's been durable enough this year -- certainly by his standards -- but the K-BB profile is bad, his velocity is down and he has a 6.00 ERA over his past eight starts. If you can shed a little money and get a low-level prospect at a time when he's struggling and when Glasnow/Kershaw are coming back (and another arm is likely incoming via trade), that makes plenty of sense to me.
I don't think the Paxton DFA was all that shocking

Let’s get nuts Springer to the Royals?
Steve Adams
3:49
If the Royals will pay the remaining contract, Ross Atkins might drive Springer to Kansas City himself. Two years and $45MM still remaining after this year -- in what'll be his age-35 and age-36 seasons. Springer was great for two years in Toronto, fine these past two, but I doubt the Jays really wanted years five and six even when signing him.

Probably like 87-88, I would thi-- oh you meant his age.

Would the Tigers consider making Torkelson available?
Steve Adams

I'd be surprised if they considered him untouchable

Could the Twins chase a controllable starter at the deadline instead of a rental one?
