It was also just a lower annual rate in the first place.

What are the Orioles going to do?
Steve Adams
7:46
Probably not as much as their fans would like to see? I can see them dealing from the 'pen -- Sulser, Fry and/or Scott -- and they'll field offers on Mancini/Means, but both seem like long-ish shots to go (especially Means)

7:47
What kind of additions do you see the braves realistically doing?
Steve Adams
7:48
Moves more in line with the Pederson deal -- marginal-cost rentals. Beyond that, they'll focus on players controlled beyond '21, and I wouldn't rule out trading a Morton or Smyly or some short-term players.
Bryce Harper just hit an inside-the-park homer. That'll be a fun clip to watch after this.

Angels aren’t going anywhere but down. Are any of their expiring contracts worth any prospects?
Steve Adams
7:49
Every contender on the planet should want Raisel Iglesias.
Someone would take a shot at Heaney, too.
7:50
Probably Bundy as well, but he's pitched so poorly and isn't stretched out now, so not going to really get anything there.
FACTS! FACTS! FACTS!
7:51
Biggest surprise trade at deadline ever?
Steve Adams
7:51
Some recency bias here, but I remember being pretty taken aback when the Astros pulled off the last-minute Greinke deal.

Mets let Eickof take a beating tonight. Are they going to make a move: SP/RP? Who would you guess is on their radar?
Steve Adams
7:53
They'll add some rotation help, yeah. Michael Pineda and Jon Gray both stand out as reasonable options
Pirates Fan
7:53
how should I feel about Ben cheringtons moves the last few days? Are we looking at another 20 years below .500?
Steve Adams
7:56
In general, the Pirates' latest moves are more examples of why I think people get too caught up in Top 100 lists. That seems to be the only benchmark. "HOW MANY TOP 100s?" which is objectively silly. There are way more than 100 good prospects in baseball, and the difference between, say, the No. 75 prospect and the No. 150 prospect is probably marginal. There are going to be scouts and evaluators who think a guy that's commonly ranked 50th overall isn't even a future regular. Pirates fans were angry about the lack of Top 100 guys in the Starling Marte trade, and Liover Peguero (that trade's centerpiece) is now widely regarded as just that.

Do you expect to see most of the deals happening at 3:59 on Friday, or have the floodgates opened?
Steve Adams
7:59
I would expect there to be something like 15 trades in the final 10 minutes of the deadline, yes. That is this collection of front office/general managers' M.O., it seems.
There'll be some trades between now and then, of course, but most clubs prefer to wait until the final minutes. It is what it is.

Is the Tyler Anderson to Philly deal dead?
Steve Adams
8:00
I haven't checked on it while doing this chat or anything but every indication has been they're still working on it.

Your prediction on the biggest name who gets moved?
Steve Adams
8:01
Hard to get too much bigger than Scherzer.
Howie Feltersnatch
8:01
Which player is more likely to be dealt, Joey Gallo or Trey Mancini?
Steve Adams

Gallo

Tyler Anderson didn't go to Phillies because I swooped in with a better offer?
Steve Adams
8:02
The trade was agreed upon pending medical reviews. If it doesn't happen, it's because of a legitimate medical issue with one of Cristian Hernandez or Abrahan Gutierrez.
At least -- legitimate enough for the Pirates to have concern. It's not like the Phillies were sitting there hoping the Bucs wouldn't notice Hernandez has a torn UCL, ha.

The Graveman trade doesn't strike me as a very "win-now" move for an overachieving Mariners team. Do you expect more moves in a similar vein or do you expect that they'll be aggressive, maybe even making a big deal?
Steve Adams
8:04
I don't think it makes them immediately better, but Dipoto has already said it's one in a series of moves intended to improve them. The timing of it is odd, though; not sure why they HAD to make it tonight. Like ... you could wait till Friday morning? Maybe the Astros didn't want to have to face Graveman or something, but it's hard to believe they made some kind of "it's now or never" ultimatum.

Will the Rays give up Brujan for Bryant straight up?
Steve Adams
8:04
No, I don't think Bryant has that kind of value given his salary, lack of control, the inability to make a qualifying offer post-trade, and his recent slide at the plate.

8:05
Should the Braves still go for it this year or retool ?
Steve Adams
8:05
It's not an ether-or. They can trade a Morton, Smyly, whoever and still acquire controllable pieces who set them up for the future and also help cover the losses of any short-term veterans.
Cards fan
8:07
Are you expecting a quiet deadline for my Cardinals?  I can't see them as buyers and they really have nothing to sell that will bring anything more than a lottery ticket minor leaguer.  Am I missing something?
Steve Adams
8:07
I don't think they'll do absolutely nothing, but no, I don't think it's going to be a super-aggressive deadline for them one way or the other.

Tucker Barnhart to Seattle as long term catching help?
Steve Adams
8:09
He's only controlled through 2022, so he's not really long-term help. And they just called up Cal Raleigh.
Stepping back, though, I can easily see Barnhart moving even if the Reds want to contend. They probably won't pick up his 2022 option since Stephenson is up and hitting well
Detroit Fire Sale

Will Detroit be moving Grossman, Schoop or any others? Imagine in this market those 2 have good value..
