any non-rental mets get moved? even if it's a wheeler or frazier?
Steve Adams
3:55
I can definitely see Wheeler going. I feel like some team is going to present them with some kind of ludicrous offer for Thor or deGrom because there's not that much else on the market that's really worth acquiring to bolster a playoff rotation. I think there's a decent chance one of them is moved, personally, but that's solely my own speculative opinion

Is the Angels season over?
Steve Adams
3:58
Almost no one's season is over on July 3 (sorry Royals, Orioles, Marlins, Reds). Halos are still over .500 at least and could conceivably go on a decent run to get back into a Wild Card mix .... Twins did something similar last year starting at a later date.

I don't think it's likely, but they're not so far gone that we should just pronounce them dead.

A complete tear-down can work, but not if several teams are doing it at the same time. How about some game theory?
Steve Adams

The Cubs' and Astros' rebuilds were largely concurrent and both proved successful, but it's true that at a certain point, the number of teams tanking will lead to diminishing returns on that tanking strategy for some clubs.

It's also true that regardless of the competitive landscape surrounding a tanking team, it might just not work. Injuries can ruin prospects, scouts can draft the wrong guy, the front office can target the wrong prospects, etc. The Reds have been rebuilding for several years now and I still don't see an end in sight for that rotation disaster, for instance.

are you saying the Mets have a chance???
Steve Adams
4:01
Ha, oops.
I do not think they do, no.

4:01
Any rumors of SFG looking at front line SP help?
Steve Adams
4:02
They probably won't do anything. They're barely -- barely underneath the luxury tax line. I don't know by how much exactly but it's no more than a million dollars or so as far as I can tell.

The only way they could do that would be to convince a team to trade a pre-arbitration frontline SP, and they don't exactly have the kind of robust farm that's going to make that easy.
4:03
The biggest addition they'll probably make is a healthy Johnny Cueto.
Rob
4:03
Aledmys Díaz to DBacks? to replace nick Amhed
Steve Adams
4:03
Ahmed is hitting more and is a markedly better defender.

If you haven't noticed, the Reds are one of the hottest teams in baseball over the last few weeks.  Their season is far from over.  They could easily get back to being a .500 team this year which would be a major stepping stone for next year.
Steve Adams
4:05
I have noticed. But getting to .500 (still 9 games off from that) doesn't do anything for them in 2018. Their season, from a "can they make the postseason" standpoint, is effectively over.
4:06
I'll happily eat that crow if they somehow go on a 25-5 run and are in the playoff mix, but even the most optimistic of Cincy fans can't expect that.

Are the braves gonna make a splash with a big arm before deadline?
Steve Adams
4:07
The only "big splash" type of arm I could see them acquiring would be a controllable reliever like Iglesias or Hand. I don't think they're going to make a flashy rotation addition.

is Max Muncy an all star?
Steve Adams
4:08
I think he should be. Guy has been amazing so far.

Think the rangers can eat some cash and move Choo? The man has been smoking the ball.
Steve Adams
4:09
They'll need to eat virtually the entire contract to move him, I would imagine.

Rumor has it that San Diego is in play for Michael Fulmer.  Do you think this is actually a possibility?
Steve Adams
4:11
I'm sure they're looking at controllable arms, yeah. They have to think they're nearing the end of their rebuilding phase -- they wouldn't have signed Hosmer otherwise -- and Fulmer is controlled through 2022.

Padres are now in the position where they have SUCH a deep farm that they're going to have significant 40-man roster crunches leading into the Rule 5. Condensing some of that down into a nice controllable SP who'll be around when you really start trying to compete makes plenty of sense for me.

Is Mike Moustakas to the braves gonna happen
Steve Adams
4:11
Moustakas hasn't been hitting for 5-6 weeks. Camargo's been outperforming him, and Austin Riley is looming. I don't think it's a great fit at this point.
Zak
4:12
if you were a GM, which reliever that is available via trade would you consider the most "valuable"
Steve Adams
4:12
Brad Hand -- I still am amazed he signed that contract extension. He's among the best lefties in baseball, he's controllable at an affordable rate, etc.

4:13
Would a Swihart for Profar trade work? Seems like two former top prospects that might do well with a change of scenery and could benefit both sides?
Steve Adams
4:14
Profar is playing in Texas right now and performing reasonably well. The Rangers wouldn't trade him for Swihart -- not on his own anyway.
Cookie Monster
4:15
when is the rule 5 draft?
Steve Adams
4:15
December. Last day of the Winter Meetings.

4:16
If Baltimore trades Adam Jones what could you reasonably expect back for him ?
Steve Adams
4:18
Not much. Teams don't really value OBP-challenged corner OF bats these days, and despite the Orioles' stubborn refusal to move him to a corner, that's what he is
4:19
Ok, I have to wrap up for the week. Jason chats tomorrow night at 6:30pm CT. Jeff on Tuesday 2pm. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve. Enjoy the holiday tomorrow and enjoy the rest of your week!
4:20
Oh, guess I shouldn't promise Jason chats tomorrow since it's the 4th! He may, but I don't know for certain, ha. Time will tell!
Adios folks.
