The vast majority of trades, as is the case every year, will happen in the days leading up to the deadline. There are too many teams whose entire season hinges on how they play in the next few weeks. Mariners, Phillies, Nats, Braves, Indians, Reds, even the Marlins to an extent.

Will teams be able to trade draft picks in the next CBA? I can't think of a compelling reason baseball doesn't allow this already.
Steve Adams
2:40
Nor can I. I know it'll be discussed. Kiley McDaniel reported recently he thinks it'll be added, I believe. It's overdue.

Any chance the Marlins make Sandy Alcantara available?
Steve Adams
2:42
I didn't think there was any way they'd trade Zac Gallen midway through his borderline Rookie of the Year campaign, so sure I suppose it's possible. But the haul would have to be overwhelming to get three-plus years of him. The sort of trade that makes as many fans upset as it does happy.

If I make a big move or two, do you think I could scare off the Nat/Braves from buying and trying to make a run at the division?
Steve Adams
2:43
I don't think either the Nats or Braves would be reactive like that, no. Also, the Phillies are like $4MM from the tax barrier and clearly didn't want to cross it in the offseason. I'm not sure there's a huge move in the offing for them.

Does Jim Crane open the pocketbook and pay lux tax for relief help, team seems only a couple of relievers away
Steve Adams
2:45
I'd rather see them get a center fielder, personally, even though Myles Straw has hit well for the past six weeks or so. If they really want to make a splash, they should try to pry Mullins and a reliever (Fry, Sulser, Tate) away from Baltimore.

Mike Elias, the O's GM, came from the Houston front office a couple years back and would no doubt like to get his hands on some of the guys he drafted.

robbie ray going to sign for 100M+?
Steve Adams
2:45
I think the track record is too up and down, but there aren't many 2020-21 free agents who've upped their stock more.
2:46
I've seen lots of flak for the Jays signing Springer because of his injuries but not enough credit for them getting Semien and Ray on deals that look like flat-out steals.
Stripling, too, has been another great add for them.

2nd half starter?
Thoughts, feelings, concerns?
Steve Adams
2:48
I think the Rays have to start leaning on him, and I wonder if they'll give Baz a look before long. Tampa Bay should be looking for controllable rotation help in the next three weeks -- trying to find another Glasnow-esque change of scenery candidate would be wise for them, even if it meant dealing away some depth that's contributed at the MLB level so far.

Most disappointing and most surprising team this year?
Steve Adams
2:49
Twins are the most disappointing. Most surprising ... Red Sox or Giants? Could argue the D-backs are both the most disappointing AND most surprising, too, I suppose. Not that we expected them to be great, but I certainly didn't think they'd be historically bad like this.

Is Eric Hosmer the worst contract in baseball?  A bad hitting guy who can only play 1b.  Should the Padres just release him?
Steve Adams
2:50
Worst? No. But it's probably among them. The Tigers still owe Miguel Cabrera $32MM in 2022 and 2023 though, and there are plenty of longer-term deals that look rough. I doubt San Diego would consider releasing him anytime soon.

Please tell me Gibson to TB is realistic
Steve Adams
2:51
Sure, it's realistic. Doesn't make it probable. Like 10 teams are going to be trying to get Gibson. But the Rays are among them anyway, and they have a deep farm (as always)

2:51
Puk for Cruz?
Steve Adams
2:52
I doubt the A's would give up Puk to rent Cruz, but yeah I have to think the Twins would make that deal even with the durability concerns.
Brewers
2:53
Is Tellez the future 1B I don't see it
Steve Adams
2:54
Maybe not, but he's a solid depth option for now. The batted-ball profile on Rowdy is pretty interesting, and it's not like they have any sort of sure thing there even when Vogelbach is healthy.
Davies
2:55
Is there another starter that's likely to be traded at the deadline (e.g. not Berrios) who is definitely better than me?
Steve Adams
2:56
Kyle Gibson, Matthew Boyd, Jon Gray, Michael Pineda. I don't think Zach Davies is all that great. His 2020 season was very good but looks like an outlier, and he's walked nearly as many batters as he's struck out in 2021 (12% vs. 14.5%)

Does adding Dee Strange-Gordon on a minors deal mean an Adam Frazier trade is close?  It’s kind of odd that the Pirates just traded away their AAA shortstop, and then go out and sign Dee… unless there is about to be room for him in the majors?
Steve Adams
2:58
They also have Wilmer Difo, Rodolfo Castro and Cole Tucker on the bench right now. Gordon could just be a near-term bench upgrade.

I don't think it means a Frazier trade will be completed in the next couple days, but Frazier is as good as gone in Pittsburgh, I would imagine, so within three weeks, Dee would have a clearer path to MLB ABs.

Who are the Rangers going to trade at the deadline?
Steve Adams
3:00
Gibson, Ian Kennedy, perhaps Joey Gallo. I'd say Folty or Joely if they were pitching better.
Jordan Lyles has been pretty decent over his past 10 games (3.90 ERA, 4.55 FIP).

Guess my team gets no love from MLBTR as usual
Steve Adams

I've written like 3000 words on Yusei Kikuchi and Mitch Haniger in separate posts on the site over the past two days alone!

Is Joc Pederson on the trading block ?
Steve Adams
3:02
Yeah, I'd imagine all the Cubs' one-year guys will be at this point. I don't think he has a ton of value, but he'd drum up interest.

Any chance White Sox acquire Bryan Reynolds?  Not sure what’s on his deal or if Pitt would even trade him.
Steve Adams
3:03
He's not even arbitration eligible yet and is controlled through 2025. I don't think anyone outside of Ke'Bryan Hayes is "off limits" in Pittsburgh, but it'd take a comical prospect package that more or less gutted the top of any team's farm system.
