Reds looking for bullpen help? SS?
Steve Adams
3:06
Should be looking for both if they're serious about contending. I question what types of names they'll be able to add, though, since they cut payroll so much in the winter. I mean, those were glaring areas of need all offseason, all Spring Training, etc. -- and the Reds just ignored them for financial reasons. Could go get a cheap glove-first SS (bring Jose Iglesias back?) and aim for some pre-arb arms from the Baltimore bullpen (Sulser, Fry, etc.)

Alternatively, the Rays are ultra-deep in middle infielders but could use some immediate rotation help. Something like Mahle for Walls isn't insane to me.

3:07
Have the white Sox turned their attention to catching help rather than second base help?
Steve Adams
3:08
Could go after some depth, but Grandal isn't expected to miss the rest of the season or anything, and the AL Central is pretty clearly going to be theirs.

ANY(?) starting Pitcher possibilities for an Angels team on the cusp of qualifying for those treasured playoff spots?
Steve Adams
3:09
Angels are one of the many teams whose deadline fate will be decided in the next couple weeks. I wish more of these teams would just add a player proactively -- can always trade him again in three weeks! -- but that generally hasn't been standard operating procedure around the game.
3:10
If the Angels are 4-5 games back of the division and 2-3 games back in the Wild Card, yeah I would imagine they'll add an arm or two -- but probably not the ace most Angel fans have been longing for years. (Mainly because that type of pitcher just isn't really out there)

Are the Twins going to need to move Josh Donaldson's contract to resign me? Or am I on my way out no matter what?
Steve Adams
3:12
Minnesota has trotted out $130-135MM payrolls in recent years (really, higher than that when you consider Maeda's incentives). They have $49MM on the books in 2022 and $45MM in 2023. Donaldson's contract isn't stopping them from doing anything.

3:12
what would you do if your were Dipoto at the deadline? Assuming the Mariners don’t completely tank.
Steve Adams
3:13
Try to acquire starting pitching that's controlled beyond this year and also gauge the interest in shorter-term assets like Haniger and especially Graveman. We love to get wrapped up in the "buy" or "sell" dichotomy, but teams' approaches are increasingly gray these days -- especially for middle-of-the-road teams (standings-wise) like Seattle.
Willson Contreras
3:14
What do you think an extension would look like for me this offseason?
Steve Adams
3:14
Have to think he'd be looking for something like $18-20MM annually for the free-agent seasons and something around the $10MM range for next year, his final arb season.
Padres
3:15
Are we going to call up Gore at all? If not we need another SP since weathers is on an innings limit
Steve Adams
3:16
I'm sure Gore is on an innings limit, too. He's also not pitching well in AAA. I don't know what to make of Gore, but we've seen the Padres ultimately trade away guys who were pretty hyped up in their system but didn't hit the ground running. (Patino, Urias, etc.)
Not saying Gore will be traded, but I'd have assumed he was pretty much off limits heading into 2020, and I don't really feel that strongly about it anymore.

How come pitching 8 innings giving up 4 earned runs isn’t a Quality Start? It’s the same ERA as 3 ER in 6 innings
Steve Adams
3:17
It should be, but like so many other stats, the definition is rather arbitrary.
3:18
Why does a pitcher who throws 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball, only to sit through a 2-hour rain delay, not get the W when his team eventually wins? Shrug.

Any chance the Cardinals attempt to get Story from Colorado? Would Col take Dejong and another high end prospect? Assuming they get back into the playoff race.
Steve Adams
3:19
I think just from an optics standpoint, that'd be hard for the Rockies to do

Do you see the Jays making another Liriano type trade with one of their catchers, where they buy prospects and take on a bad contract in the hopes they can turn it around?
Steve Adams
3:20
They were in a different place when they made that deal. I expect their moves to be more straightforward upgrades to areas of need. That said, I can see them dealing a catcher. They have the depth.

Give me a wild prediction for a trade nobody saw coming ?
Steve Adams
3:23
Padres continue to go nuts and overwhelm the Twins for Berrios with something centered around Paddack and multiple near-MLB prospects? (That's an off-the-cuff and entirely speculative scenario, to be clear)
JR
3:24
Quick predictions on where 5 no-brainer trade candidates end up: Jon Gray, Adam Frazier, Matt Boyd, Tyler Anderson, Kyle Gibson?
Steve Adams
3:26
More rampant speculation. Sure, why not?

Gray: Jays
Frazier: White Sox
Boyd: Rays
Anderson: Mets
Gibson: Cardinals

Will Chris Bassit be traded in the off season to NY?
Steve Adams
3:29
Doesn't have to be to NY specifically, but I can see the A's moving either Bassitt or Manaea in the winter. Their arb class is going to be huge.
Daniel
3:29
What would it take for the Jays to get Berrios from the Twins?
Steve Adams
3:29
I'd say 10% of today's questions are about Jose Berrios, haha.
3:30
If I'm building an off-the-cuff package for Berrios from any team, it's starting with a young, MLB-ready replacement and adding prospects on there. So ... Toronto ... Nate Pearson and then start adding some near-MLB pieces.
3:32
Alright, I've got to call it for the day. I'm on Twitter for more questions @Adams_Steve. I'll have a chat with our Front Office subscribers this Friday at 2pm CT

Anthony will chat Friday night, I believe. Mark this weekend. Me again next week -- maybe even on the right day this time! Haha.

Have a great week everyone.
