It's easy to say now, but the shoulder and elbow were the concern. Brusdar looks great, and that deal has worked out well for both the Twins and Dodgers. But if his arm blows up in the next year or two, the whole dynamic changes, and that was Boston's concern.
Yankees signed Jordy Mercer, team announced
2:34
Also Rays announced Brendan McKay is undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery.
Oops, Rays didn't announce that one -- Marc Topkin from the TB Times reported it (which means it is happening)... team should officially announce sooner than later

Ohtani. A lot of hype, but haven't seen much yet. Maybe with more experience and fewer injuries. Over hyped?
Steve Adams
2:35
He's a career .279/.345/.526 hitter in 238 games.
2:36
That's 33 percent better than league average, by wRC+
2:37
And he posted a 3.31 ERA with 11 K/9 in 51 IP before his arm went out in 2018. It sucks that he's been hurt, but his talent wasn't overhyped, no. No one else on the planet can produce like that on both ends of the ball.

It's maybe another week or so before any surgery is season-ending surgery, right?
Steve Adams
2:38
Yeah, we're nearing the point where something like a minor knee scope or something is going to be too much to come back from. But in McKay's case, the shoulder surgery is much more concerning. That'd be a season-ender at any point during the year.

Is Barreto suffering from an amazing run by Kemp or just bad timing?  Melvin states he really wants to get him at bats but keep Davis in the DH.
Steve Adams
2:39
I feel like Barreto just isn't going to get a chance in Oakland at this point. The organization can't be that high on him if they claimed Tony Kemp off waivers and immediately plugged him in over Barreto.
2:40
I very much wonder about him being traded in the next couple weeks. Lots of teams could use some infield depth. Hell, Red Sox could just use someone to roll the dice on as a starting 2B
Orioles
2:41
From my perspective is it smart for us to sell high on Iglesias Alberto, nunez, and severino if we can package Davis and Cobb or get decent prospects to add depth to our system ?
Steve Adams
2:41
Adding Cobb and especially Davis to any deal is going to completely eradicate any potential trade value (unless, in Cobb's case, you're paying the vast majority of the contract).
2:43
Iglesias just went on the IL like 20 seconds ago and has had minimal interest the past two offseasons, so he was never going to bring much back. Nunez's defensive limitations hamper his value.

Alberto? I think you'd have some genuine interest. Severino, too, to a lesser extent.

The Orioles should be open to moving pretty much anyone with 3+ years of service (that includes Alberto)
PTBNL
2:43
Are PTBNLs ever determined by success of player traded?
Steve Adams
2:45
Sometimes they're conditional. I think the Brewers/Indians' Sabathia trade back in the day was contingent upon whether Milwaukee made the playoffs with CC. That PTBNL wound up being Michael Brantley ... not bad!

What do the Braves need more: a starting pitcher or a 3Bman who can hit over ,200?
Steve Adams
2:45
A starting pitcher
And then another one.
Manning
2:45
Maybe Tigers bring Manning up on Friday.
Steve Adams
2:46
Why wouldn't they just have added to the hype of the Prospect Parade and included him in Monday's announcement in that case?
Wanderer
2:46
I guess the Pirates would be better off signing kela to raise his value. Then trading him. He does experience as a closer.
Steve Adams
2:47
I highly doubt the Pirates are going to make Kela an offer he deems strong enough to pass on free agency.
We're talking about an owner who spent $4.75MM in free agency, total, last winter.
And $7.8MM the prior winter.

Gausman to the braves?
Steve Adams
2:48
They've already been down that road once before, and it didn't pan out all that well.

Is this the year the Dodgers finally win the World Series?  Best offense and top pitching staff looks tough to beat...
Steve Adams
2:49
The Dodgers have been the best team in baseball for most of the past few years. The best team doesn't always win though; anything can happen in a seven-game series.
(Or a five-game series when trying to qualify for said 7-gamer)
Ross Atkins
2:49
What am I doing with Giles this deadline?
Steve Adams
2:50
That depends entirely on whether he's actually healthy. Have to think if he's back they could swing some kind of PTBNL deal -- similar to what I described with Kela before.
Rangers29
2:50
Serious question. Why do teams like the O's (for example) want to dump contracts like Cobb and Davis? They won't be a good team before the contracts expire, so what's the need in dumping them. They make plenty of money as an organization.
Steve Adams
2:52
Because their owners want to make more money than they currently are making. Paying $80MM+ in payroll to be the worst or second-worst team in baseball is less appealing than paying $50MM to be just as bad (going by last year's results).

Pirates select #1 in 2021?
Steve Adams
2:52
They'll have the worst record it seems, but it's not 100% clear yet that draft order will be determined in the traditional method.

The good news is Harper liked SF so much he signed with the Phillies. The only thing that could make the Giants season worse would have the over inflated ego of Harper pulling them down further.
Steve Adams
2:54
It takes a creative approach to try to suggest a guy hitting .364/.493/.673 would make any team worse. Kudos!
