Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 8/19/19

Steve Adams

It's less than 70 plate appearances. The big uptick in K's is mildly concerning, but he's always had strikeout issues. I wouldn't worry too much about 68 PAs.

You know, Elvis Andrus has been using Baby Shark ALL YEAR LONG, right???  Why is Parra getting all the attention???
Steve Adams
2:49
I do not keep up with player walkup songs enough to know such things, no. My deepest apologies to Elvis Andrus, MLB's OG Baby Shark blaster.

On the flip side of plate appearance sample size, when do Twins fans start to believe that Arraez is going to keep hitting?
Steve Adams
2:50
Who thinks he won't keep hitting? I doubt he's a .350 hitter, but he's batted .300 or better with minuscule strikeout rates throughout his career in the minors. I don't think there's ever going to be much power there, but he can flat-out hit.

Any faith in my squad in this wild card hunt?
Steve Adams
2:54
I worry about the Phillies' pitching depth, but that lineup is so dangerous if everyone's clicking offensively. And Bryce Harper homering seven times in 10 games seems like a particularly good sign for them. I think they're in better shape than the 10-15% chance they're getting at Fangraphs and B-Pro, but they'll need to plow through some pretty good teams to get there. Their remaining schedule isn't particularly cushy.
Aquino
2:55
what about my start.  Cool HUH?
Steve Adams
2:56
I was on board with Aristides Aquino based on his name alone. The ensuing dinger parade has been fun to follow. Fun few weeks for Reds fans I'm sure, although there's obviously no way he sustains anything close to this. Very curious to see him over a larger sample though.
Jurickson Profar
2:56
Will the A’s be able to move Profar in the off-season, or has his full on Chuck Knoblauch throwing issues cancelled any chances?
Steve Adams
2:56
I'm sure someone will be interested in buying low just based on the pedigree, but I wouldn't hold my breath for anything of real note in return.

Verlander/Greinke/ McCullers/ Sanchez/ ???. Do the Astros go with Whitley, Peacock, or try to get another reclamation project pitcher for the 5th rotation spot next year?
Steve Adams
2:58
They'll add a starter this winter; McCullers is coming back from TJ, Sanchez has constant finger/blister issues even when he's pitching well... they can't feel good just sticking with internal options.
Stephen Strasburg
2:59
If I finish 2019 strong and healthy, do I opt out of my remaining contract that’s left...4yrs/$100 million?  Should I test the waters to tack on another year and $30 million somewhere?  Or is the market too risky?
Steve Adams
3:00
If he were 29, I'd say maybe he gambles and opts out, but he turned 31 in July. He's not going to get a longer deal than the 4 years he already has, I don't think, and the annual raise he might stand to get wouldn't be worth the risk. Nationals would certainly QO him, which would hurt him, too.
Rockies claimed Wes Parsons from the Braves

Going to do a quick headline on that move and will return in a minute.

re. Astros adding a starter - do they have the financial flexibility to add another starter? Seems like taking on the majority of Greinke's contract might strap them for cash.
Steve Adams
3:07
They have $144MM committed to next season ($107MM in luxury considerations) and will probably be active in trade discussions that could further impact those numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if they shop Josh Reddick around, for instance.

They probably won't play at the Gerrit Cole level -- though I'm sure they'll still explore a reunion -- but Wheeler, Ryu, Bumgarner, Odorizzi, Gibson, Pineda ... there are a fair number of names out there.

Do you see Graterol getting called up to Twin Cities this season?
Steve Adams
3:09
Yeah I think he'll be in the 'pen in September.

Would David Price be claimed if he were put on waivers next week? Or would the Red Sox have to know at least one team would put in a claim before they put him out there? Otherwise, it may be too risky to have to eat the contract.
Steve Adams
3:09
No team is claiming the remainder of that contract.
3:11
Red Sox would never put him on outright waivers. He'd clear, become a free agent, and go pitch elsewhere for the league minimum with the Sox paying the remainder of his $31M annual salary.

The days of running big contracts through revocable August waivers are gone.

What are your thoughts on todays USA Today article concerning the state of the game, according to some HOFers?
Steve Adams
3:12
I couldn't care less what Goose Gossage thinks about anything. I don't know why people continue to give him a platform so he can just whine that baseball has changed. It happens every year. Every. Single. Year. Hey Goose -- if baseball is unwatchable... stop watching. And can the media please stop interviewing him?
3:13
You could just as easily find several HOFers who are still in the game and still love it. Selectively cherry-picking a few who don't is meaningless.
JC Collins
3:13
Where does Yazmany Grandal sign next year? Hes not saddled with a QO.
Steve Adams
3:14
Three years and $60MM? Being 31 years old won't help him, but his decision to go with a one-year deal right now certainly doesn't look bad.

Does Spencer  Turnbull have value this winter?
Steve Adams
3:16
Heck yeah he would, although given what the Tigers asked for Boyd due to his remaining club control, I doubt teams would find the ask on Turnbull any more appealing. But a 27-year-old SP with 5 seasons of control remaining and a solid showing in his first full big league season? Most teams would have some interest.
Real Baseball!
3:18
I agree with Goose.  it's become nothing but strikeouts, walks, and homeruns, with a lot of dead time and posing in between.  We still love it, but if you want to attract a younger demographic, that has to change.
Steve Adams
3:21
Alternatively, if you want to attract new fans, you could stop propagating the narrative that shifts are bad, sac bunts and the hit & run were the pinnacle of excitement, and that modern baseball has been "ruined by nerds."

If we want to attract people to the game, let's stop broadcasting a bunch of curmudgeons who trumpet how the game is broken because it's not the same as when they played.

Obviously baseball has changed, and it's going to continue to change. That doesn't make it inherently bad, and this obsession with "fixing" something that is not broken but merely different from how it used to be is exhausting. I find multiple things about baseball to love every day -- it's not hard.

Any names to keep an eye on for offseason that’ll get Posted? Maybe Yamada the ‘Trout of Japan?’
Steve Adams
3:22
I haven't looked too much into it yet -- admittedly, I usually have by now, so I'll need to get on that -- but Josh Lindblom is having a laughably dominant season in the hitters' paradise that is KBO, so he may be your next Colby Lewis/Miles Mikolas/Merrill Kelly type.

3:22
Are you tired of young players being compared to Mike Trout?
Steve Adams
3:23
Comparing anyone to Trout is unfair to the player in question.
Gary
3:23
No question. Just a statement which you can comment upon. Personally I despise the shift. I hate watching a game on tv, a guy takes a low and away pitch right back up the middle for a hit, except that it is right at a defender. If you want to improve the game, make it so that players can range where they want, but only within certain zones. Must have 2 guys on each side of the diamond.
Steve Adams
3:24
Why though? The only reason "positions" ever existed was because early in the game's history, teams tried to spread their defense out to evenly cover the diamond based on where they thought the ball would go. It was a bunch of guesswork designed at having a man within range of as many balls hit as possible.

We have better data now -- I see no problem with using it.
