Chances of the Royals trading Sal Perez this off-season and if so what's his market value?
Steve Adams
3:28
I can't see them moving Sal, period.

I also just don't think Perez is as good as the narrative surrounding him indicates. He's sort of in that nebulous "he calls a great game" sphere where Yadi finds himself. But while much of what we can measure about Yadi is objectively great, that's not really the case with Perez. He has a .270 OBP and terrible framing marks. He's a monster when it comes to preventing steals, but that alone doesn't make him a a superstar to me.

How quickly do teams know whether they've won the claim and can negotiate for a player? For example, did the Braves know before this afternoon that they didn't get Matt Adams (assuming they put a claim in for him)?
Steve Adams
3:29
A player is placed on waivers, which last 48 hours (47.5 hours I believe, to be weirdly specific). The team that won the claim is notified. Teams that claimed but didn't get the player are notified as well. Then, the winning team has another 48 hours to work out the deal.

I’m feeling a 3 peat for cy young and a top 5 mvp finish u thinks it’s possible
Steve Adams
3:29
Scherzer is amazing. Possible to me for sure.

Is Teheran Gohara Inciarte and Bryse Wilson over pay for deGrom?
Steve Adams
3:32
The Mets would have no interest in Teheran in that deal; adding him in there adds negative value.

They'd want MLB-ready assets with six years of control, and you're including guys whose stock is down plus one guy who has skyrocketed this season, it seems, because you don't want to list the types of players New York would really, truly be after. That's going to be guys like Wright, Anderson, Soroka, Touki, etc.

That's not to say Gohara wouldn't be of interest, but I don't think he'd be a headliner -- especially not with Teheran in there.
Basically, take Acuna off the table. Then concoct a package that would make you vomit. Then add another really high-end non-Acuna prospect or two, and you have a plausible deGrom deal.

How exactly does the waiver work?
Angels fan
3:33
What is the one move the angels need to make this off-season to give trout a shot at the playoffs? Doesn't seem like a stand out ace makes it to free agency
Steve Adams
3:34
I don't think there's one singular move for the Angels or any team. They need help behind the plate, stability in  the rotation, a reasonably reliable reliever and some extra left-handed bats to help balance out a lineup that leans way too much to one side of the platoon and leaves them extra susceptible to rotations stacked with tough righties (like the one Houston will trot out in 2019, for instance).

Was Gio placed on waivers along with Murphy/Adams/Harper? Be interested to see if he gets claimed *coughBREWERScough*
Steve Adams
3:35
No word that he has been, but I would be surprised if he isn't and there's a definite chance he goes.
3:36
Also, forgot to mention at the start of the chat, but shout out to Mike Rizzo for commencing the fire sale within literally 10 minutes of what was going to be an updated Top 20 August Trade Candidates for MLBTR, with Murphy near the top of the list.

Rewrite.

are the Pirates now toast?
Steve Adams
3:37
I don't know that they were ever strong contenders, which is why the guys they acquired had 2-3 years of control remaining. But yeah I think they're very close to the edge here.
Am I delusional?
3:37
Or did Mark Reynolds play OF once upon a time??
Steve Adams
3:37
He has 21 innings in right, 36 in left and..........
ONE THIRD OF AN INNING IN CENTER
3:38
Just now learned that and holy crap do I want to find what the hell happened during that game
Rockies Fan
3:38
What do we do with all our expensive ineffective relievers?
Steve Adams
3:40
Go back in time and un-sign them? (I kid, but I was taken aback by them spending $100MM+ on three relievers this winter -- what on earth)

No one's going to touch those contracts unless they're taking a bad one in exchange. Could try to flip the last couple years of Shaw or McGee for an overpriced short-term position player. Kendrys? Would get the cash off the books faster and kind of fill a need, though then you actually have to play him in the field.
Natsfan
3:41
How close are the Nats to dropping under the luxury tax after today’s moves?
Steve Adams
3:42
They were about $14-15MM over the line, so this won't drop them back, but it's a good reminder that they've saving something like 1.3x the face-value amount it appears.

3:42
Is Dominick Smith a Met next year?
Steve Adams
3:43
With them playing him in LF and not making much of an effort to get him into the mix this year, plus Peter Alonso demolishing the minors, I could see Smith as a change-of-scenery guy this winter.
BJ Surhoff
3:43
Who will be the ‘best’ player to be traded in August?
Steve Adams
3:43
Might've just seen it with Daniel Murphy
3:44
Sounds like there's a decent chance Cutch will go, too, but he's more name value than actual value at present.
(That's not to say he isn't good -- he's just not the superstar he was at his peak)

I can't believe how dumb the NL is for letting Cubs get Murphy. Do you see the Cubs doing anything else before the end of the month?
Steve Adams
3:45
Genuinely surprised he got to them. I think Murphy proves the Cubs will grab anyone they feel is an upgrade over their worst position player, worst pitcher, etc. They horde depth, and it's tough to fault them.

3:46
Does it seem strange that the Nationals are selling now but about to bring Strasburg back tomorrow without a rehab stint? If you are going to sell for next year, wouldn't it make sense to take it easy with Strasburg?
Steve Adams
3:46
If they're convinced Strasburg is 100%, I don't see why they wouldn't still bring him back.
Jim Jam
3:47
Who should/could have blocked the cubs from murphy?
Steve Adams
3:48
Cardinals and Brewers in particular, but I don't see why any contending team wouldn't place a claim. If the Nats dump him on you, then you find a way to make the playing time work out. Murphy would upgrade basically any team's mix of position players.

3:48
Do options expire?  For example, if the world lost its mind could a player say mike trout be sent to the minors or anybody who didn’t use up theirs options but has been in the pros for years?
Steve Adams
3:49
Once a player has 5+ years of service he has to consent to being optioned. Think there's a rule in the CBA that if it's been 3+ years since you've been optioned you have to clear optional waivers (and possibly give consent), but I will admit that it's such a rarity that I'm not immediately familiar with it and would have to consult the CBA to be sure of the specifics.
