is Austin Riley, the most improved player in MLB?
Steve Adams
2:37
He's improved, sure, but you could argue he's not even the most improved player on the left side of the Braves' infield. Most improved in MLB seems like a reach to me -- but he's having a real nice year at the plate, obviously, and he deserves credit for slashing that ugly rookie K% by more than 10 percent.

$100MM for Castellanos?  Woof.  Feels like the kind of contract that could turn belly up real fast.
Steve Adams
2:38
He's the best hitter on the market and most clubs seem to expect the NL will add the DH sooner than later, which will only help his market. JD Martinez was a better hitter and worse fielder, and he got 5/110 in free agency with only one or two teams really chasing him.
2:39
Both are repped by Boras. Both entered the market in advance of their age-30 seasons.

do you think Scherzer goes back to Washington or does he chase the ring (even if he gets one this year)?
Steve Adams
2:41
He'll go to the best contender who's willing to offer him the longest deal. Dodgers or Giants or someone could afford to offer him 3/110. That super-premium AAV on a short-term deal should be right in their wheelhouses.

I will say that based on his trade preferences, it seems like he'd stay on the West Coast (or at least out of New York)

In the past 10 years, has there been a more disappointing elite prospect than Gregory Polanco?
Steve Adams
2:42
Polanco actually had some decent MLB seasons, so sure. There are plenty of top-10 overall prospects who either don't make it to the Majors at all or who just stink when they get there. Travis Snider was the No. 6 overall prospect in baseball once upon a time.

Castellanos at LF in Fenway. Ill take it for 110/5
Steve Adams
2:44
I think he'll do better than 110 (more like 125 or something like 6/132), but sure the Red Sox are a fine fit. JDM is going to decline a player option at season's end and go back to free agency most likely.

Is Trevor Story a candidate to accept the QO and bet on himself having a big year in 2022?
Steve Adams
2:45
Even if he wants a one-year deal I think he'd reject it just to get out of Colorado and have a fresh start.

I don't think Story necessarily needs to go sign a one-year deal, though. He's raking this month and has generally hit pretty well since coming off the IL back in mid-June.

What does this Freeman extension on my desk look like???
Steve Adams
2:46
5/135? 5/140?

Do the Yankees try to keep Voit, re-sign Rizzo for the lefty bat and the elite defense and try to platoon him with Voit going forward?
Steve Adams
2:47
They won't platoon them. I'm sure they'll keep in touch with Rizzo and, if the price is to their liking, be willing to re-sign him. At that point, you can look to move Voit. If Rizzo goes elsewhere, Voit is a perfectly solid option at 1B.

2:47
Can the Reds use the Qualifying Offer on Castellanos to get draft compensation if he opts out?
Steve Adams
2:47
Yeah they can QO him if he opts out.
Clint Frazier
2:48
Is this the year I go from being trade bait to an actual trade?
Steve Adams
2:48
There's not much value there at this point.
Could be a change-of-scenery guy, but I don't think teams are going to give up a ton of MLB talent to roll the dice on Frazier.
Phat Albert
2:50
Will the NL DH give Albert a chance to chase 700 home runs?
Steve Adams
2:51
Maybe? He's been fine with the Dodgers, but he isn't producing at an elite level there or anything. I guess you get some ticket sales, merch sales and such from signing him and letting fans enjoy the chase, but he's not a great hitter anymore.
Gm
2:52
Chances the Phillies pick up McCutchen’s option for 15 million?
Steve Adams
2:53
He's hitting .220/.333/.435 with sub-par defense. They won't pick it up, even if they want him back. (They should set their sights higher though)

2:54
who do you think will sign the biggest free agent contract?
Steve Adams
2:55
Corey Seager. I could see a case for Correa or Bryant, but Seager has a couple years on Bryant and is a better all-around player than Correa for me. Injuries obviously don't help him, but he's hit well since being activated -- and Correa has some injury history himself.
SS bonanza
2:57
Is Semien all of a sudden the most attractive SS FA this coming winter?
Steve Adams
2:58
He's a lot more attractive than people realize or will give him credit for because his 2020 numbers look bad based on what was basically three awful weeks early in the short season. (He mashed in the playoffs, too)

But he's much older than Seager, Correa, Baez and Story, which hurts his stock.
Dombrowski
2:59
Is there any real chance I can fix this bullpen before we're all fired?
Steve Adams
2:59
Phillies aren't going to fire Dombrowski after one year

If you're Farhan, what do you do with QOs? Disclifani? Belt? I'm interested to see what they'll do with SP and 1B next year.
Barney
3:02
Do you think the Padres can get their acts together and make the playoffs this year?
Steve Adams
3:03
I don't think a QO for DeSclafani is nuts after the season he's had. And they can afford it. I wouldn't make one for Belt -- it's easier to find a replacement at 1B.
3:04
The Padres are reeling right now, but they're hardly eliminated from playoff contention. These things always go in waves. Prior to the deadline, every question I got on the Yankees and Braves was "When will Cashman/Anthopoulos wake up and SELL? This team sucks"
3:05
Right on cue when talking about the Phillies' front office, wow -- they just announced the ousting of two assistant GMs and their director of player personnel. I suppose maybe that release came at the same time someone asked about Dombro's job, ha, but I only just saw it now.
Reds DFA'ed Sean Doolittle
Tejay Antone back from IL.
