I think it's totally defensible if they do, and he's a generally underrated player who's well liked there. I just think $19MM-ish for a 34-year-old first baseman with a few IL stints under his belt in 2021 is more than I'd offer on a one-year pact. And I do think there's a chance he'd accept... which is a fine price, but not any kind of bargain. The free-agent market is not excessively kind to mid-30s players or 1B-only guys.

I've still got enough middle infield prospects that I should be making re-signing Robbie Ray ahead of Marcus Semien my top free agent priority this winter shouldn't I?
Steve Adams

I think Semien is the more consistent of the two. Even before Ray's recent Jekyll/Hyde 2020-21  turnaround, he was pretty inconsistent on a year-over-year basis.
3:10
That said, Ray will probably also cost less. Depends how much ownership is going to give you to spend. Depends on the CBA. Depends on a lot of things. But in a vacuum, give me Semien over Ray for the next couple seasons. Can always trade some of that middle infield depth to bring in rotation help. And the free-agent market is deep in starters as well.

Is there a legit stopgap in the FA pool at SS for the Twins? Moving Polanco over would be a bad call

I know they have Lewis and Martin now, but neither is a lock to stick at shortstop. They should be looking into more than just stopgap options to see if they line up. You can always move a young, versatile talent like Lewis or Martin around the diamond.

If they want to go pure stopgap... Jose Iglesias? See if Javy Baez wants a one-year, make-good deal? See if the D-backs will eat some of Nick Ahmed's remaining salary?

convince me that Rendon will not be Hamilton 2.0.
Steve Adams
3:14
He's signed for two years longer and at a much larger salary!
3:15
That's probably not the way you wanted to be convinced, ha, but if Rendon's contract really does go south, it's a lot worse than Hamilton's was.

That said, Rendon is a better player with more defensive value. He's been elite when healthy. We'll see how he recovers in 2022.

With the current losing streak at 18, do you think the Orioles will designate/release more veterans to give some more playing time to younger players ?
Steve Adams
3:16
The only veterans they have at this point are Mancini and I guess, sort of, Pedro Severino and Anthony Santander.
3:17
They won't bring up Adley, so I imagine it'll be Severino/Wynns the rest of the way behind the plate. Santander isn't someone they'd just cut.

You could argue for cutting Harvey and giving those innings to young pitchers, but he's been throwing pretty decently and they don't want to overextend their young arms.

Will they let Conforto and Noah walk this year?  And will they dip into the FA pool for an OF and some more SP this off season?  After such high hopes to start the season - this is miserable now, looking ahead to yet another off season, and the hope....there's always the hope....
Steve Adams

They'll probably QO both. I don't think either is a lock to accept or to return in general. They'll need to add some pitching with Stroman and Hill becoming free agents.

Ok, I need to wrap this up for the week. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve for more questions if you like. Thanks so much for chatting and enjoy the rest of your week everyone!
