Do you listen to Jerry DiPoto's podcast? If not, I highly recommend it. Such a great insight into MLB.
Steve Adams
3:43
I've listened to a handful of them -- maybe 4-6? Not every episode. But I agree that it's great and well worth a listen for any baseball fan -- not even just Mariners fans. You don't get that level of candor and insight from most GMs, and he is a very likable guy, too.
Um...
3:44
Gio couldn't be blocked by the A's if the M's have a higher claim priority...
Steve Adams
3:44
Gio already cleared waivers.
Mickey Callaway
3:45
Wilmer Flores what return can we get for him that I can call up peter alonso
Steve Adams
3:45
It's not really Mickey's call in terms of whether Alonso gets promoted, nor is Flores really blocking him. But Anthony DiComo tweeted in the past hour or so that the Mets have decided not to call up Alonso this season, which seems absurd.
3:46
Not only are they not giving Dom Smith the at-bats he needs at 1B, but now they're also not giving those ABs to the best internal alternative they have. That organization is utterly baffling.

Why isn't there  more chatter about Blake Snell being  AL CY Young award contender?
Steve Adams
3:47
He's 30-40 innings behind the top contenders. I've seen some suggestion of it, so it's out there, but falling 5-7 starts behind someone like Kluber is a major issue in voting. Bauer and Sale both hitting the DL might've helped his case a bit, but I still don't think he'll have the innings.

3:47
Any chance teams utilize openers or 3-4 inning pitchers since the 6-7 inning starters are so fee and far between?
Steve Adams
3:49
The Rays are already walking down that path. I think other teams will follow suit -- particularly clubs that've had some injury issues. Angels would be an interesting candidate to do so, for instance. The Twins have a lot of mid- and back-of-the-rotation arms as well as relievers who can go multiple innings. Oakland would make sense to experiment with that, too.

3:50
I don't agree with your assessment of Blake Snell's ERA chances. He should be seriously considered and I don't think his lack of starts will hurt him, it is results that count.
Steve Adams
3:52
He'll get some votes, sure, but innings absolutely matter. Posting a 2.30 ERA over 200 innings is a tougher feat than 2.10 over 160 innings or something.

If inning volume didn't matter, then Craig Kimbrel would have like 5 Cy Youngs.

Tyler Flowers Extended-Why would AA go this route and not with Kurt S? Kurt has better numbers and twice the WAR value of Flowers this year?
Steve Adams
3:54
Flowers is more than two years younger and is an enormously better defensive catcher than Suzuki. WAR doesn't include pitch framing, where Flowers consistently ranks among the game's best whereas Suzuki typically falls among the game's worst
Suzuki is fairly inept in terms of controlling the running game, too.

Carlos Santana for Zack Cozart swap this winter... who says no?  Halos then ink Mous.
Steve Adams
3:56
I can see the thinking, but it creates a tough spot for the Angels with Pujols still serving as an anchor on their payroll and roster. If they want DH at-bats for Ohtani they've got to play Albert at first base sometimes, still, which makes Santana a tough fit. He's also considerably more expensive.
3:57
As for Moose, if the Angels wanted him, they'd have signed him last winter. He's having a worse season at the plate now than he did in 2017, and he's a year older. Maybe his asking price will be down, but Billy Eppler has spoken about his desire to bring in on-base threats -- and Moose (.314) isn't that.

It's true that Pujols is an on-base black hole, but the Angels are pretty much stuck with him.
Mike
3:58
why do people think Cozart is good whatsoever
Steve Adams
3:58
He was an elite defensive SS whose offense was 15 percent better than the league average over a three year period from 2015-17.

No Cincinnati on 3-4 inning starters? Proven they can't develop or trade for starters for the last several decades.
Steve Adams
4:00
Reds would be a candidate too, yeah -- a good one. I have no earthly idea how Williams can talk about being competitive in 2019 with a straight face. That pitching staff is in total disarray, though I suppose DeSclafani's last eight starts or so give them a smidge of hope for one rotation spot.
Ed McWilliams
4:01
David Wright is rehabing in Triple A now.  Very likely he returns to the bigs. Wont be good most likely but a great heart warming story
Steve Adams
4:02
I sure as hell hope he can make it back -- even if it's just a few games in September and then he retires. That guy has gone through utter hell to try to get back onto the field, and whether you like him or the Mets, his perseverance is pretty remarkable. I'm definitely rooting for it to happen.

How do revocable waivers work with a 10/5 guy? Say if Adam Jones was put on waivers twice but has the ability to deny a trade?
Steve Adams
4:03
I believe he'd still have the ability to reject being claimed by the new team, but he's already cleared waivers so it's kind of a moot point.

Are the Giants rebuilding this off-season?
Steve Adams
4:03
Nope.
Matt
4:04
Schwarber for Fulmer, who says no?
Steve Adams
4:04
Much easier to find a slugging corner-only outfielder than any sort of serviceable mid-rotation arm.
(Tigers say no)

What do the Reds do with Bailey? It is so tough to watch. Yikes.
Steve Adams
4:05
I don't know why they haven't released him, and it is downright mind-boggling that they're putting Stephenson in the 'pen after only 3 starts but leaving Bailey in the rotation.
If you thought Stephenson was a future reliever anyway, then why did he start 20-something games in AAA this season? I don't see how three starts in the Majors are enough to make that determination.

4:06
It’s not in their history, but do you see the White Sox making a splash in free agency with a signing like Machado?
Steve Adams
4:07
Abreu's $68MM contract is their largest ever, and I can see Machado commanding 5-6x that in free agency. I get the fit, but I have a hard time buying it.

Looking at who has cleared waivers are there any surprises to you?
Steve Adams
4:09
Little surprised Smoak cleared just because he's so cheap and a good hitter, but perhaps teams simply figured the Jays would pull him back. I could've seen Flores getting claimed. Beyond that not many real surprises.
