Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/11/18

They tried to last winter (Darvish), though thankfully for them the Cubs bailed them out. I think they'll still look at the AL Central as a weak, winnable division with better health and performance out of their key guys. I don't think they're going to sign Harper or Machado, but yeah I think they'll be looking to spend.

Does Tyler Chatwood even qualify as a buy-low candidate? Would another team take him off our hands?
Steve Adams
3:46
The remaining money on his deal isn't crazy or anything, and there are a lot of guys being paid in that $12-14MM range over the next two seasons. Could swap him for another so-so contract. I'm working on a couple of pieces pertaining to bad contract swaps that should go up in the not too distant future.

Would Dexter Fowler take a buyout of his contract to just move on?
Steve Adams
3:47
That's not really how baseball works. If they want to get rid of him, they find someone to take the contract off their hands or they just release him and pay him the full sum.

Am I in my last year in MLB?
Steve Adams
3:48
He hasn't said one way or the other, but if I were to guess (and that, to be clear, is all this is), I'd say yes.
I have a feeling....
3:48
Cubs sign harper for 10 years at 330 million and the giants sign machado for 8 years 255 million.  do you see this happening?
Steve Adams
3:48
I think you're light on both contracts.
Chris

Would it make any sense at all to play Ohtani at 1st and Pujols at DH next year? Keeps Pujols from being a defensive liability, and if Ohtani can play RF, you'd think he could play 1st - and 1st would put less stress on his arm I would think.
Steve Adams
3:50
I don't think they'll put him anywhere that could involve him having to make any kind of throws in a game setting. Imagine a ball getting past him on an errant pickoff throw or something and him having to try to throw a runner out at home from foul territory. I don't see a reason to risk that when his arm is such a precious commodity.

Where does Harrison Bader rank for NL rookie of the year?
Steve Adams
3:51
He'll finish top five. I would imagine the top two will be Acuna and Soto, in some order (probably Acuna in the lead right now), with Bader, Flaherty and Dereck Rodriguez rounding out the top five.
Shohei Ohtani
3:52
It'd be a shame, but do you think it would make the most sense for all involved if I just gave up pitching?
Steve Adams
3:53
Why would he do that? Honestly. He's having Tommy John surgery -- just like 50 other pitchers probably have this year and a few hundred have over the past few seasons. He'll sit out 2019 as a pitcher and be back in 2020.

How do the Padres handle the two catchers?  Hedges and Meija?  I want to keep them both.  The Padres could have had Benito Santiago AND Sandy Alomar Jr.  Nothing wrong with having two good catchers.
Steve Adams
3:54
I don't think they'll feel any real urgency to move either. A tandem with Mejia seeing more playing time and Hedges being a really strong glove-first backup with some pop seems like a good thing for any up-and-coming club to have.

Jo Adell + others for Degrom?
Steve Adams
3:55
Adell is the type of piece who'd need to be at the center of any theoretical trade (with several others going as well), but I don't think the Mets will move deGrom.

Should the Braves trade Austin Riley? Camargo's been worth 3.1 WAR which would be tough for Riley to equal even if he reaches his potential.
Steve Adams
3:57
That assumes that Camargo can sustain his improved plate discipline and power while continuing to post huge numbers defensively. I wouldn't just pencil him in as a 3-WAR guy from here on out, even though he's been way more impressive than I expected.

No reason to simply move Riley just because you have someone emerge, though. Injuries happen, depth is important, and Camargo can play multiple positions if needed. Sure, go ahead and be open to the idea if a team comes calling, but this isn't some situation where Anthopoulos needs to call the other 29 GMs and say "OK make me your best offer for Riley" and just take what he can get.

What would a theoretical Arenado extension look like?
Steve Adams
3:58
It'd have to break Stanton's $325MM mark, I would think.

Of note: Arenado is repped by the same agency as Stanton (Wasserman)

3:58
Do you think Kershaw will opt out at the end of the year?  If so, what kind of contract do you think he would get?
Steve Adams
3:59
I don't see any way he settles for 2/65 unless he's hurt. I think the most logical thing is for him and the Dodgers to just re-work a new five-year deal or something. I haven't thought a ton about it, but he should still be looking to comfortably top $100MM even with the health issues the past three seasons.

Do you have a minnesotian accent?
Steve Adams
4:01
Ha. The "o" slips out here and there, but generally speaking, that accent isn't really as prevalent around Minneapolis/St. Paul as you'd expect based on movies, TV, etc. The further outside of the Twin Cities you get, though..... it is very real, ha. You can dig up some of the old MLBTR Podcasts to hear my Midwestern voice in all of its splendor. And, let me tell you, there is some SPLENDOR. (Not really)

Will I have a job next season?

GMDM isn't going anywhere unless he decides he wants to walk away.

Predict the Nationals opening day OF--2019-thanks
Steve Adams
4:02
Soto, Robles, Eaton. I think there's a definite chance they re-sign Harper, but given incumbent team vs. the field for any free agent, I will almost always take the field.
indians
4:02
if you are the indians, do you keep cody allen and andrew miller instead of donaldson? or extend donaldson?
Steve Adams
4:03
I don't really expect any of the three to be back. And it's not really a "Miller/Allen or JD" scenario at play here.
Adam Stevens
4:03
Brighter future, Byron Buxton or Yoan Moncada?
Steve Adams
4:04
Buxton could probably be worth two wins just based on his glove and baserunning, even with a .280 OBP. I'd take him between the two.
Andrew
4:04
Has a pitcher ever rehabbed from TJ while batting 300+ plate appearances in the rehab season?
Steve Adams
4:04
There hasn't been a pitcher who's been a good enough hitter for that to even be a consideration.
Ohtani is a freak.
Nick
4:05
If the A's finish out the season with a 13-5 record they'll win 100 games. Have you ever seen a team be this successful before with the lack of starting pitching the A's have?
Steve Adams
4:05
What Oakland has done with the starting pitching they've had has been nothing short of remarkable. I wouldn't call it repeatable, in the least, but what's happened has happened and there's no taking it away. It's one of the more improbable seasons I can remember.
