Six-plus years of Mahle and four years of Duvall for three years of Stroman when the Reds aren't otherwise ready to contend seems like a good way to take a step back in their rebuild. If I'm the Reds, I'm not trading for anyone I can't control for at least 4-5 more years, because I don't think they're going anywhere next season yet.

I was really surprised the twins did not claim any player in august on waivers your thoughts?
Steve Adams
3:35
The Twins claimed lots of players. Derek Falvey and Thad Levine both said as much in various interviews that they placed numerous claims. They're also pretty far down the list of AL waiver priority, though, so every Wild Card contender in the league had the opportunity to block them, and presumably did so
Placing a claim and being awarded a claim aren't the same thing, of course. But it certainly sounds like they placed their fair share of claims. They just weren't awarded any of them because of their place in the standings

Is there a previous article that explains why the Rangers have to add Prince Fielder to the 40-Man roster every off-season? Why can't they collect the insurance money if they leave him off and put him on the minor league DL?
Steve Adams
3:38
As soon as they outright him or release him, he's able to collect the remainder of the salary no matter what. My understanding of insurance policies on these contracts is that the player has to remain on the active roster/disabled list

3:38
What in the world do I do with Miggy and that contract? It is without question, the worst contract in baseball, or at least tied with Pujols
Steve Adams
3:39
Lose a whole lot of sleep over it and hope that he rebounds? It was one of the worst contracts on the planet the moment he signed it.
Leyonis Martin
3:39
Could I be converted to a pitcher? I hit 91+ on my fastball...
Steve Adams
3:40
Tons of defensive value and some fairly recent success at the plate -- no real reason to do that. Plus, look at the list of position players that've tried to convert to the mound in the past year alone. Bethancourt, Schafer, Eibner -- there are more that are escaping me, but they haven't fared well in terms of results or in terms of health
3:41
Anthony Gose is another
Jordan
3:41
You think Donaldson will get 100 mil? Seems... ambiguous no?
Steve Adams
3:42
You mean ambitious? I do think he's in line for a $100MM+ deal in free agency next winter, even with his age, yes. He still has defensive value and has rebounded to being one of the best hitters in baseball in recent months.

If he completely tanks defensively or offensively in 2018 (or gets hurt), then sure maybe he falls shy. But as things stand right now, I'd take the over on $100MM.

Mychal Givens was drafted as a shortstop I think. He has turned out to be a really nice relief pitcher.
Steve Adams
3:43
Converting players to pitchers earlier in their development is much easier than doing so after they've been playing the outfield professionally for a decade-plus like Martin has.

Can a player with over 100 strikeouts and less than 20 walks really survive in the majors?   Will DeJong figure out how to hit?
Steve Adams
3:45
That, and DeJong's pretty notable BABIP, are why I think he's in for some pretty hefty regression. He makes an above-average but not elite amount of hard contact. I buy that he can carry a BABIP above the league average, but I don't think he's keeping it at .360.

The power will probably earn him a spot in the lineup no matter what to open the 2018 season, but for a team that got sick of Grichuk's tons of power/tons of K's/not many walks routine, giving a starting job to DeJong is weird. It's like begging history to repeat itself.
3:46
I suppose there's still hope that he improves his approach -- he's barely 24 -- but without some changes to his current approach he seems like a guy that's going to struggle to OBP .300

3:47
Anthony Gose seems like the perfect candidate if rosters expanded for a new relief pitcher/pinch runner utility type player.
Steve Adams
3:47
I think he threw something like 10 innings in A-ball and was absolutely shelled
Jean Segura
3:48
I am pretty close to 100k's and 30 ish walks and im successfulish
Steve Adams
3:48
Your 100 K's have come in twice the plate appearances. Segura has a 15% K rate. DeJong is at almost 30%
3:49
Over a full season he'd K something like 200 times with 20-25 walks, given his current rates.
mlb trade rumors
3:49
With the trade deadline come and gone, how do you guys stay busy?
Steve Adams
3:51
September's a slow month for us, to be sure, but we're starting to take high-level offseason looks at team needs (Three Needs series) and will be launching our full Offseason Outlook series next month, in which we'll take deep dives into all 30 teams' and preview their winters (2000-3000 words apiece, often).

We'll also be profiling the top free agents, examining under-the-radar offseason trade candidates and of course keeping up with all of the end-of-season roster maintenance that is commonplace every year. Each team is going to trim 5-10 guys off its roster, some will be claimed by other teams -- there will be a lot of roster juggling in the coming weeks.
3:52
And the offseason is arguably a busier time for us than during the season. We've had many Decembers that are busier, from a traffic standpoint, than July due to the Winter Meetings, offseason free agency and the steady stream of trades all winter.
Profar
3:52
What could I fetch in a trade? Would the Ranges keep me if they don't get a good offer?
Steve Adams
3:53
Profar doesn't have nearly the trade value that Rangers fans would hope. I don't think he'll fetch that much this season when he's traded -- and I do expect him to be moved -- nor do I think any team should part with all that much to get him.
Though the Rangers' decision to keep him in AAA did give trade partners another year of team control. So good on them for that, from a business standpoint. (Crappy of them from on a personal level, but hey it's a business)

Have 3 years of Corey's Brother
Steve Adams
3:54
Ooops
This is the one I meant to click here, ha
Would you rather
3:54
Have 3 years of Corey's Brother or one year of Machado?
Steve Adams
3:55
Give me three of Kyle, who's still a very good player even in a "down" season. Machado's obviously better, but you spread out the risk with three years of a very good player as opposed to one of an elite player.

Depends on the state of the rest of your roster, of course. If I were Dayton Moore six months ago and was asked that question, I'd take Machado since my window is 2017 and 2017 alone, for instance.

3:56
whosat third for yanks next year frazier headley glyber?
Steve Adams
3:56
Frazier is a free agent and probably gone. (Todd, that is... not Clint, ha.)

They'll probably ease Gleyber back into things, so Headley if he isn't traded. If he is, then they'll maybe start Andujar or Torreyes there and then move Torres into the fold once he shakes some of the rust off.

How the hell you gonna pop off about In N Out being overrated?  You trying to alienate fans?
Steve Adams
3:57
Ha. Someone follows me on Twitter.

In N Out is good. It is not the life-changing, religious burger experience that many make it out to me.
3:58
Maybe it's because I'm a midwest native, but give me Culver's all day every day. Not close.

Do you think the Twins will try to move Dozier again this offseason, sign him to an extension, or let him play out his deal and walk?
