Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/12/17

Coming off a contending season I don't think they'll be anxious to move him, especially since the market won't have tons of teams clamoring for second basemen. Entering next season with him at 2B on the final year of his deal seems likeliest to me right now, if only because they probably view Polanco as the long-term option at 2B and Gordon as a hopeful long-term SS.
But, if they think Sano needs to move to 1B/DH as soon as Mauer's deal is up, then you can dream on Polanco at 3B, Gordon at SS, an extended Dozier at 2B and Sano at 1B, in which case an extension is more plausible.

Is there any shot that I will be with the Dbacks opening day?
Steve Adams
4:03
Think I'm going to run myself into the ground saying this in these chats, on MLBTR posts and on Twitter :)

I can't see any way that they can fit Martinez into the long-term payroll unless they're planning a massive payroll increase. They have $60MM+ committed to 2018 before taking a class of at least ELEVEN players to arbitration -- a group that includes Robbie Ray, Jake Lamb, Chris Owings, AJ Pollock, David Peralta, Shelby Miller, Taijuan Walker and several other reasonably expensive guys.
They'll be at ~$100MM for 2018 without signing a single extra player this winter, just with their arb class.
4:04
And I can't see anyone taking that Tomas contract. I think JDM is a two-plus month rental for the Snakes.

Ever check your family tree to see if you are related to John Adams?
Steve Adams
4:04
My dad's name *is* John. We are not related to any former presidents, though. Ha.

With LoMo and Duda both FAs after the year, who's the Rays 1B on Opening Day next year?
Steve Adams
4:07
There will probably be another crowded market for 1Bs this offseason, with those two, Hosmer, Alonso, Carlos Santana, Moreland and even guys like Bruce and maybe Bautista vying for 1B jobs. The Rays will probably just wait out the market and see who falls through the cracks, if they go free agency for a 1B at all. (The trade market is typically more where they look to fill their holes though)

Does MLBTR have a fantasy baseball or football league?
Steve Adams
4:09
Baseball yes, football no. (Though maybe the Pro Football Rumors guys have a football league -- I'm not sure, I'll ask Zach next time we chat)

#HUMBLEBRAG I'm going for my third straight title. It is not looking good, but I'm gaining ground on Jeff and Tim. Top three in our roto league are separated by 5 points, but I'm running out of categories in which I can plausibly make up points, and I have Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors and Connor Byrne of MLBTR/PFR breathing down my neck.

Will the dodgers ever win again?
Steve Adams
4:09
BOLD prediction: Yep.

What do you think the Red Sox pentalty should/will be for the sign stealing?
Steve Adams
4:10
Some kind of fine.
Rangers released Tyson Ross -- ouch.
Cleared space for Calhoun.

Are the Yankees and Eric hosmer on a 2018 collision course?
Steve Adams
4:11
I think that narrative is a bit overplayed. The Yankees haven't shelled out that kind of money in recent years and seem committed to getting under the luxury tax threshold. I'm not ruling it out, but I think they made more sense as a trade spot when we thought the Royals were selling than they do as a free agent suitor.
4:12
One second -- I'll chat another few minutes, but going to get a quick Tyson Ross note on the site.

Is Carlos Asuaje for real?
Steve Adams
4:16
For real in what sense? I think he can be a guy who hits for a decent average with solid on-base skills and limited power, but he needs to cut back on the K's at the MLB level to get there. He whiffed at like a 12% clip in the minors and he's at 22-23 in the Majors

You should try head to head in fantasy baseball.
Steve Adams
4:16
I have. Many times. I much prefer roto.

Favorite memory of baseball ever at a game

I have a lot of them, but it's hard to top Game 163 in 2009 -- Tigers vs. Twins in the awful Metrodome's final season. I've never heard noise like that in my life, and there were about a dozen lead changes with the go-ahead run seemingly always in scoring position in an extra-inning game. It was truly amazing to experience.

I've been released. What is next for me?
Steve Adams
4:18
Sign a minor league deal this winter and try to reestablish yourself?
Rayland#1
4:18
Head to head more realistic.
Steve Adams
4:19
I know if there's one thing I crave in my *fantasy* baseball, it is realism! :)

Pirates build package around Austin Meadows for Michael Fulmer in winter. What say you?
Steve Adams
4:20
Tigers aren't selling low on Fulmer coming off arm surgery, and Meadows' stock has cratered in 2017. He hit .250/.311/.359 in Triple-A. He's still young, but scouting reports I've seen on him this year haven't been nearly as favorable as they were in the past.

Another Angels pitcher down, is it time to blame the training staff or have the angels been struck by the devil?
Steve Adams
4:22
Alex Meyer has had shoulder problems every year since 2013. I'm amazed they got as many innings out of him as they did. I couldn't believe they wanted to try him as a starter when they acquired him.

I'm not saying that to rip on the guy, it's just surprising to hope for longevity out of a guy with that injury history.
I do think the Angels have had quite a bit of bad luck, and I don't think you can pin Meyer's shoulder troubles on them -- though you can question the decision to not just make him a reliever from day one.
