Who'll go further in the postseason?

Padres (66.3% | 322 votes)

White Sox (33.7% | 164 votes)

Jimmy "best name in baseball" Yacabonis DFA'ed in Seattle; booooo Seattle.
For what it's worth, I'm with the majority here and taking Padres as the more formidable postseason opponent.

What would the Mariners need to add in the offseason to be more in the mix next year? Always seemed like 2021 was the target year...kinda nice to at least get to look at the playoff standings this year.

Starting pitching and bullpen help. I think between Marco, Justus and Kikuchi -- yup, still a believer -- they have a good foundation, and I know they're deep in high-end arms... but you can never pencil all of those arms in to break through at once. And injuries will happen, inevitably.

Could use an infielder who can play multiple positions and hit a little bit, too. I realize that's true of basically any club, ha, but I don't think either Long or Crawford is the clear up-the-middle solution yet, so someone who can handle both spots and serve as a non-zero with the bat would certainly help.
Michael Conforto
2:36
Even with Boras as an agent... would I take 6/120 from the Mets to stay in NY?
Steve Adams
2:39
Well he's making $8MM this year and due a raise in arb. We have no real clue what arb raises will look like in this short-season, revenue-vanished year, but let's just arbitrarily (ha) say he goes from 8 to 12 in his final year.

At that point you're offering him five new years at a total of $108MM -- a bit less than $22MM annually. Boras took that, with multiple opt-outs, for an older DH-only J.D. Martinez.

Conforto is (much) younger and can actually play a fine right field. I would bet if you asked Scott Boras, right now, if Conforto is worth more than 6/120, he would give you an unequivocal "Yes." But we also don't know how revenue losses will make teams act, and the decision ultimately lies with Conforto -- if he wants to take the cash in an uncertain baseball economy, you can't blame him.
2:40
TL;DR -- I think under normal circumstances Boras/Conforto would bet on Conforto. But predicting anything financially is a nightmare right now

The Angels drafted Thaiss and Ward as Catchers, then pivoted them to other positions that don’t have clear openings. Why not leave them as Cs?
Steve Adams
2:41
I don't fully remember the book on Ward as a prospect, but no one thought Thaiss was going to stay behind the plate. The Angels drafted him for his bat and hoped they could do enough to keep him back there, knowing it was probably a long shot.

how will the 2021 draft order be determined???
Steve Adams
2:42
Nothing set in stone yet, but also no indication it'll deviate from the norm.

The dodgers seem so hypocritical when they protest a showing like Grisham gave them. Muncy telling mad bum to get the ball out of the bay. Years of Puig. Win the big cake. Then you can talk.
Steve Adams
2:43
Everyone is hypocritical when they whine about another team "showing up" an opposing pitcher, because every team does it. Let the hitters have fun. Let the pitchers do huge fist pumps and give their own over-the-top reactions when they get a big strikeout or close out a game. Baseball is more fun when people can show emotions.

Will the owners use the loss of money this year, not knowing about next year and the strike/lockout of 2022 to only give out 1 year contracts at a lot lower price? Free agents in trouble this winter?
Steve Adams
2:46
Yeah, I think free agents -- the non-elite guys, that is -- are in for a cold winter. Pretty much everyone you talk to in the game thinks the same as well.

hi steve what do you think about the prca ( professional rodeo cowboys association)
Steve Adams

I now know that it exists, which is more than I could've said 20 seconds ago.

Will any of the deadline trades this year be labeled as bad as the trade that sent me to Tampa?
Steve Adams
2:47
I didn't like Cleveland's return for Clevinger, but it'll be a bit before we see a trade burn someone as badly as the Pirates got burned by Archer for Meadows/Glasnow/Baz

Twins offseason plans? Still some flexibility, and a good core, but do they get aggressive or wait for internal help?
Steve Adams
2:49
Rotation upgrades again, I would think. I imagine they'll try to re-sign Cruz and be aggressive in pursuing Bauer. Their Donaldson deal notwithstanding, they've preferred to keep their FA deals to 1 and 2 years, and they have the resources to make a huge push for Bauer on a one-year deal. Plus Derek Falvey came from Cleveland's front office, so you have that connection, though such ties can sometimes be overstated.

% likelihood that we trade Arenado for a bag of peanuts?
Steve Adams
2:50
Don't know about the peanuts part, but I think a trade is likelier than not this winter.

What are realistic returns in a Merrifield or Soler deal?
Steve Adams
2:54
The realistic scenario is that the Royals stubbornly refuse to trade them because Dayton Moore and his staff don't want to further prolong the rebuild and are fatally optimistic about the players they have.

I don't say that as a knock on them, either. I wish more teams were committed to trying to win year-in, year-out even if it doesn't look likely from the outside. It makes for good storylines and would keep the general game more competitive.

How serious is the Realmuto hip injury? Too close to FA to have a hip problem.
Steve Adams
2:55
If it were severe they'd have put him on the injured list. They did not, so I don't have any reason to believe it's major.

Really when do you all start to take the Jays serious?
Steve Adams
2:56
Who says I don't take them seriously? Because I picked the Rays and their current 3.5-game lead to win the AL East? The Jays are good.
Rangers29

I thought of something earlier: The Blue Jays could win the WS in Globe Life Field, in the first year that Globe Life Field is open. That would be the best comeback to any argument/scuffle ever, even better than punching someone.

Do you guys have Lindor going to the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets or staying with Cleveland this Winter?
