Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 9/17/19

Should we not go all in with Trout's best years NOW?  Build a package for Betts or Lindor around Adell and others.  Go all out for Cole and/or Strasburg.  Trade other pieces for Robbie Ray.  The minor league system is full of OF and middle infielders.  Use them.
Steve Adams

(Angels owner = Arte Moreno)

Sure, they should be aggressive in building around Trout. But the specific players you listed -- Betts, Ray in particular -- aren't necessarily good fits. Both Betts and Ray are free agents after 2020.

I fully expect the Rays to be aggressive on Gerrit Cole this winter.
A Rendon

Me to the Astros on a 1 yr/$30M deal to create the most absurd super team ever.  Could it happen?
Steve Adams
3:59
If Anthony Rendon were to sign a one-year deal it'd probably be for $50MM+
(Also, there's no way he'll sign a one-year deal)
He might get $30MM+ annually on a six- or seven-year deal

Free Agent Galvis a nice fit in SF to platoon with Crawford and Dubon at 2B-SS. Over/under on 2/10?
Steve Adams
4:00
Galvis has a $5.5MM option on his contract, and the Reds wouldn't have claimed him if they didn't intend to exercise it.

Who's an under-the-radar candidate to get non-tendered this year?  Thinking of, say, Chris Carter getting non-tendered despite leading the league in HRs a few years ago.
Steve Adams
4:00
Alex Colome? His ERA is a mirage, and his save total will push his arb price tag above $10MM
4:01
Augh
Obviously I meant "expect the Angels to be aggressive on Cole" above
Ha
Thanks for those who pointed that out

Pache, Kyle Wright, & Bryce Wilson for Betts . Who says no ?
Steve Adams
4:02
For one year of Betts at $28-30MM? Braves aren't going to give that much up

Whose your NL CY young winner?
Steve Adams
4:03
Probably deGrom again
No 1 will touch Hosmer contract?
4:03
I see your Eric Hosmer, and raise you a Zach Cozart, Albert Pujols and Justin Upton. *sigh. An Angels fan can dream.
Steve Adams
4:03
Cozart has like 1/12 left on the deal. It wouldn't be hard to move that.

Colome has always outpreformed his FIP, like plenty of pitchers tend to. When does he deserve the benefit of the doubt that FIP doesnt describe his game well?
Steve Adams
4:05
His career FIP entering the season was about 40 points higher than his ERA. It's close to two runs higher in 2019, and he has career-low K numbers, career-high BB numbers and a .199 BABIP that is 80 or 90 points lower than his career mark entering 2019. He's not worth $10MM+

Schoop 3/30. Over/under?
Steve Adams
4:06
No OBP skills, lots of alternatives in free agency and trade alike limited role in MN down the stretch. I'm not sure he gets half that in guaranteed money.

speaking of upton cozart and pujols, have the angels handed out the worst contracts over the last 10 years? Hamilton, CJ wilson, Harvey, Cahill and others come to mind
Steve Adams
4:08
Every team has one-year misses like Harvey and Cahill. Those aren't even a factor.

Moreno's pushes for Hamilton and Pujols have to rank toward the top of the mistake list, though.

Darvish opt out?
Steve Adams
4:08
Nope
Booo

any chance the Giants can trade Longoria without eating any of his contract?
Steve Adams

See previous answer.

Ok, I need to wrap up for the week. Yankees just announced they DFA'ed Breyvic Valera, who is not a Game of Thrones character but rather an actual MLB player. I'm going to get that move on the site. I'm on Twitter for more questions if you're so inclined; @Adams_Steve.

I'll probably chat Friday this week since Jeff has a scheduling conflict and can't make it work. Have a good week everyone!
