I doubt the Pirates will have a $10MM player.
2:31
Right now they don't even project to have a $5MM player, but maybe they sign a starting pitcher for a year and $6MM or something
Nick
2:31
Absent a salary floor do the A’s tear it down this winter? Trade Montas, Chapman, C-Bass and Matt Olsen?
Steve Adams
2:32
I don't think they'll trade everyone from the quartet of Chapman/Olson/Bassitt/Manaea, but it's hard to imagine all four staying. Manaea and Bassitt are free agents next winter, too. I'd expect one of them to go before Montas. I'm at a coinflip on whether Olson or Chapman is likelier to be dealt.

Over under on a Marcus semien contract 150million
Steve Adams
2:34
I'll take the under on $150MM total but the over on $100MM.

Zack Wheeler doesn't get enough love. Leading the league in innings, WAR, K's after a pandemic shortened season
Steve Adams
2:35
I agree. I loved that Keith Law highlighted him today in his Awards piece at The Athletic. I'm writing a piece for our subscribers on why Wheeler has a legitimate MVP case. He won't get it, of course -- I doubt he even gets a first-place vote -- but I think it's far more deserved than most would give it credit for.
2:37
He's leading the Majors in innings pitched, by a comfortable margin, at a time when teams are more cautious than ever with workloads. Innings are more valuable than ever right now, and he's not only leading the league but also dominating on a per-inning basis -- despite pitching in front of a putrid defense that inflates his run-suppression numbers and extends countless innings with shoddy play.

Wheeler has been an absolute monster this year. He deserves WAY more credit than he's gotten for the season he'd had.
Pirates
2:37
Are there any absolute untouchables, save for Hayes and probably Reynolds?
Steve Adams
2:37
Yeah I doubt they'd trade Hayes. Won't trade any of the near-MLB top-end prospects (Roansy, etc.). I don't think Reynolds is firmly untouchable, but it'd take something comedic to get him.

What does a Starling Marte contract look like
Steve Adams
2:39
Four years and more than $20MM per? He's been awesome. The Marlins' reported 3/30 and 3/36 offers to him should be viewed as insulting both to Marte and to the fans. Here's hoping they do better with whatever they offer Alcantara.

What should my top priority be this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:39
Improving the Phillies' terrible defense

Any way we trade jose this offseason and what might a return look like.
Steve Adams

I have a hard time seeing them trading Ramirez heading into what I'm sure they want to bill as a new era for Cleveland baseball. Teams will try, of course, and he'll be all over the rumor mill. I'd lean against a trade being likely, personally.

Their 2022 season can be built around Ramirez, Bieber, Civale, McKenzie, Plesac, Quantrill, several other interesting young arms, and some other players who probably don't get enough credit (Franmil, Straw to an extent). Clase in the bullpen. Hope for Karinchak to get right.

If they're crashing and burning next July, then get more serious with looking at a Ramirez trade.

Mullins, Mountcastle, Mancini, Santander, Hays, Rutschman.  O's should at least have a decent lineup and win a few more games next year right?  Maybe get a pitcher or two and even be "not terrible"?
Steve Adams
2:45
They should have a solid offense, yes. I think you have to expect SOME regression for Mullins. I still love him, but this is like a 95th percentile outcome for him. Conversely, Santander is someone I'd expect to be a little better.

I doubt they'll spend much, but it'd be nice to see them at least sign someone competent so they don't just lean on Means and then whoever has a pulse for the next four days. Someone in the Drew Smyly or Michael Pineda mold isn't going to excite too many people or push them into contention, but at least they'd have a serviceable second option every few days.
Fried Fries
2:47
Do you see Max Fried taking the next step towards Cy Young contender? Amazing second half
Steve Adams
2:48
I could, absolutely. I've been a big Fried believer since before the 2020 season and wrote as much that March:

Will the Orioles try to be last place again next year? Or will they attempt to get a winning mentality by adding a decent veteran arm or two?
Steve Adams
2:48
O's could add a veteran starter or two and probably still finish last. The rest of the East is just better right now.
puig
2:49
Why has Puig not received a contract? He is better than a lot of the people currently on teams.
Steve Adams
2:49
He's the subject of an ongoing sexual assault investigation in the United States and currently playing in Mexico.

Would Carlos Rodon take a QO?
Steve Adams
2:51
I think he'd have to consider it. I think it was last week, maybe before, that I addressed this... depends on his ultimate goals. Think Kevin Gausman a year ago. Rodon can probably get a nice three- or even four-year deal right now. If that's his endgame after so many injuries, that's totally defensible and go ahead and reject.

If he wants to bet on himself  and aim for a five-year deal (or longer) worth $100MM+, then accepting the QO makes plenty of sense. Get the huge payday, hope for better health and sustained success in 2022, and take your shot next winter without draft compensation attached to your name.

Stearns, Theo or the field for the Mets top job
Steve Adams

I'd take the field.

I am returning to Rays in 2022?
Steve Adams
2:52
Doubt they'd pay up for him, and the likely addition of the NL DH will only expand his market.
2:53
My objectively hilarious poll is not being well-received. Not even 10% of people have voted! I am insulted. (I'll find an actual topic, haha)

The Ms are playing some inspired baseball right now, but looking to 2022, who am I targeting beyond big name FAs assuming Julio and Marte are really the only untouchables on the farm?
Steve Adams
2:55
Controllable help in the rotation. They line up nicely with the Marlins for a possible deal. Center field and catching help to potentially spare.

I don't think they'd trade Rodriguez or Kelenic, but there's a lot of OF depth  there, and behind the plate they have both Torrens and Raleigh, who could hold some appeal in Miami.
Chaim Bloom
2:57
What are the chances that Bobby Dalbec, Tanner Houck, Jarren Duran, and Garrett Whitlock are all on the opening day roster for my team next year?
Steve Adams
2:57
I like the pitchers' chances better than Dalbec and Duran. I think Duran, in particular, will need to earn it with a huge spring showing. Possible though.
Shohei Ohtani
2:58
Do you see me leaving the Angels for greener pastures? Better chance at winning.
Steve Adams
2:58
It's not really up to him right now. He's theirs for two more seasons even if he wants otu.
