Machado wouldn't take that contract.
green jacket, gold jacket, who..
3:58
Is Scherzer the best pitcher in the game and has he solidified his HOF inauguration?
Steve Adams
3:59
He's among the best in the game. If I needed one pitcher to start one game this weekend, I'd probably take him. I do think he'll be a Hall of Famer.

Do you think the Mariners can find a decent trade for Kyle Seager this winter?
Steve Adams
4:01
He's been terrible at the plate this season. I don't know if there's some kind of physical issue with him, but he's hitting the ball on the ground more and also popping up to the infield more, all while his strikeout rate his jumped and his walk rate has dropped noticeably.

I'm not sure who'd be up to take him on coming off a season THIS bad at the plate, but it'd have to be a swap of another bad contract or have to include the Mariners substantially paying down the final three years of his deal.

I don't see it.

Would Machado play 3B for the Angels if Simba is to his left, or was that statement just to bump the prices up so teams that don't need a SS but need a 3B will place a bid?
Steve Adams
4:03
Any team with any semblance of a need at third base, shortstop and even second base (assuming there's a left-side infielder they could slide to 2B) was going to bid anyway.

I think he just genuinely prefers playing shortstop. But I do think if a team makes a sizably better offer than any competitors with the caveat that he has to play 3B, he'll do it. In the end, if someone's going to give him an extra year or another $20-30MM more than the next bidder, it's hard to envision his SS/3B preference being the dealbreaker.

Bryce harper plays where next year? Hearing Phillies
Steve Adams
4:04
Bryce Harper and Scott Boras don't even know where Harper will play next season
4:05
Nor does the team who'll sign him
The Phillies will be interested, sure, but that's nothing we haven't known for two years now. So will the Giants, the Yankees, the Nats and several other clubs in all likelihood -- even with an exorbitant price tag.

What is wrong with me?
Steve Adams
4:07
If it's true that he's been playing through a shoulder issue all season, and the Cards knew of it when they traded for him (Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported as much -- and he's one of the best beat reporters on planet earth) -- then I cannot fathom why they went through with the deal to begin with. It's not as if slugging corner OFs are the rarest commodity these days.

Does the player take it or no? Machado (8 at 225) Harper (10 at 250) Keuchel (4 at 48)
Steve Adams
4:07
No across the board

4:08
Should the Cubs retain Cole Hamels after this year?
Steve Adams
4:08
At this point I'd consider it likelier that he stays than goes
Arenado
4:09
Better chance I am signed long-term in Colorado or traded this off-season?
Steve Adams
4:10
Can I choose neither? I don't think he'll sign an extension nor do I think they'll trade him.

He's going to be 2019 Machado, though next year's Rockies have a considerably better chance at contending than this year's Orioles did. It was obvious that Baltimore was more or less DOA heading into the year.

4:11
Justin Dunn in mets rotation July 2019?
Steve Adams
4:12
Most of their MLB rotation will probably be injured, so sure.

Really, though, he has just under 100 AA innings this season, I believe, so it's possible. Hasn't exactly carved up Double-A opponents, though.

Eloy is on CWS 40 man roster
Steve Adams
4:13
Yes. I corrected myself already

4:13
What do you think the odds are Harper takes a shorter term deal (think 3/90) and tries to hit free agency multiple times rather than take the massive payday now?
Steve Adams
4:15
Zero.

Free agents of his caliber get that opportunity these days by virtue of opt-out clauses anyway. Besides, he's going to be looking for $30MM+ over a 10-13 year contract. If you at least want to make the 3-year scenario interesting, you'd have to throw out something nutty like 3/150.
james
4:15
So does Clay buchholz get a contract next year? What do you think the numbers will look like if he does?
Steve Adams
4:18
He's gotten himself a definite big league deal. Could end up with multiple years. His agents might try to make some kind of Rich Hill comp, here, but he doesn't have anywhere near the strikeout numbers Hill did. If he can end up in the 2/16 range, I'd call that a solid deal for team and player, but maybe he pushes a bit further. Hard to argue he doesn't deserve more than Cashner got last year.

4:18
10/320 for Arenado? Or do McMahon/Welker take 3rd in 2020?
Steve Adams
4:19
I have a hard time seeing him take less than Stanton got.
Especially since the two are repped by the same agency
Buck Duquette
4:19
are you saying you KNEW the 0's were gonna be a 100 + loss team on opening day???
Steve Adams
4:20
No one could've predicted they'd be THIS bad.
But it was clear they weren't going to contend
Jeffrey Todd Helton
4:21
Who is the most likely traded pending FA to stay with the acquiring team?
Steve Adams
4:23
Can we count Harvey even though he was traded back in May? I can see the Reds pushing to keep him -- especially with the reports that owner Bob Castellini was against trading him.

The Dodgers have liked Brian Dozier for awhile now, and Utley is retiring. Decent fit there.

4:23
is my davis deal the worst in the history of the mlb?
Steve Adams
4:24
I think you have Peter Angelos to blame for that contract far, far more than you do Dan Duquette.

It's terrible, but the Ryan Howard extension was such a clear misstep at the time, and the same could be said of Miguel Cabrera's absurd extension, which didn't even BEGIN until his age-33 season.
4:25
Everyone knew the Davis contract would eventually blow up on them, but I'll admit that I'm surprised by how quickly it went south.
Bobby Bonilla
4:27
I know it's less money, but my contract has to be up there in terms of pure absurdity
Steve Adams
4:28
Bonilla doesn't even have the worst contract of that type! It gets less publicity, but the Braves have apparently been paying Bruce Sutter more than $1MM annually for damn near 3 decades:

Side note: the Chris Davis contract has deferrals that'll pay him through something like 2037.
