Not sure if I saw this name…Cubs 0% or less in on Aaron Judge?
Tim Dierkes
10:13
I mentioned in my post...they can afford him.  They'd have to pay him through age 38 or beyond, and they probably feel better about their long-term OF than IF.

Man no love for Madrigal....? He was a top 5 pick, profiled as a 2b only, with little power. Did teams think he would grow into a gap type power guy? Does he have a future as a Cub or will he be on his 3rd team this offseason...What would he bring back?
Tim Dierkes
10:14
I mean, there are probably a lot of teams that would not have drafted him fourth overall in 2018. Most people would rather have Jonathan India, who was drafted right after him, for example.
I don't think he'd bring back anything of note.

What do you think the odds are of the Cubs trading for Sean Murphy?
Tim Dierkes
10:14
I'll give a 10% chance.

10:14
Any chance cubs just hold out for Rafael  Devers to be a Free Agent?
Tim Dierkes
10:15
I doubt the Cubs are thinking this way.  And I imagine there is concern about whether Devers is a long-term 3B.
Drew
10:15
Any chance Patrick Corbin could be a reclamation project for the Cubs if he were packaged along with someone like Drew Millas or James Wood?
Tim Dierkes
10:15
The Cubs aren't plucking the Nats' best prospect for taking on Corbin.  But I'm all for taking on the Corbins of the world.

10:16
Isn't Adrian Sampson arbitration eligible next season?
Tim Dierkes
10:17
That's worth a look.  I know he had 2.009 in service after 2021, not sure how much he got this year.
Jon KK
10:17
Correa, Senga, Abreu, additions to make Madrigal/Kelenic work, one or both of Smyly and Miley back, and the usual reliever reclamations. That would be pretty great (not sure the Cubs want to go to the yrs/$ Rodon will want).
Tim Dierkes
10:17
That is actually pretty plausible to me.
Mickey Morandini
10:17
What does everybody have against tiny 2B with no power?
Tim Dierkes
10:18
I met Mickey once.  He was really cool.  I also met Kevin Tapani, Jeff Blauser, and Scott Servais that day at the Cubs Convention, same.
I think Mickey might be on Cameo, have to check into that.  There are some really good MLB values on Cameo.

Is there any chance Contreras accepts the QO? I don’t think he’ll get more than 19.25 aav in free agency
Tim Dierkes
10:20
I think the chance of Willson accepting is very small.  I actually think he could get that AAV (19.65) times four or even five.  And, he might not want to accept a contract where he's kind of not wanted.  Plus, if the bottom drops out and no one wants him, I think a 1/20 contract would be easy to find.  Yasmani Grandal took this path and got paid the following year.

Not necessarily a Cub question but does relate to deGrom…might he pull a Clemens and take a mid season deal so he can minimize the wear and tear and be in top form for October?
Tim Dierkes
10:20
I think after a (hopefully) healthy offseason, he wants to be ready to rock in spring.  The man is 34, not 44!
Hector Villanueva
10:21
A rotation of Hendricks, Stroman, Smyly, Thompson, and Steele is actually pretty competitive, assuming health of course.
Tim Dierkes
10:21
Assuming health is doing a lot of heavy lifting there for a group where no one sniffed 150 innings.  But even then I don't see much of a short-series playoff rotation there.
True story
10:21
Scott Servais once grabbed me by the shirt at a Cubs convention.
Tim Dierkes
10:22
I've got one for you.  I'm about 15 years old at the Cubs Convention, and I see Kevin Foster sitting in a chair not doing anything.  Ran up for an auto and he said no.  Nonetheless, RIP
I've also been refused a 'graf by The Fridge himself.  Here's the story
10:23
I'm at Lake Forest catching Bears players as they come in
I don't know football much and see a massive dude get out of a car.  I ask my friend's brother, "Hey, is that the Fridge???"
Friend's bro says nothing, sprints over, gets the auto.  I come over, Fridge says, "Sorry kid, I only sign one"

If you met Kevin Foster he was probably doing his signature ball flipping. RIP
Aaron
10:23
I don't really put any stock into the idea the Cubs wouldn't be in on Rodon. Wittenmyer was really just grasping at straws to find a negative bent. I don't know that it's likely, but I don't see why they wouldn't at least engage him.
Tim Dierkes
10:24
I agree with you there.  I love Gordon but he is the ultimate Cubs Curmudgeon.  That said, something has to go wrong with Rodon's market for him to take three years, or the Cubs need to abandon all "intelligent spending" stuff to give him 4+.
Degrom, Verlander, Ohtani
10:24
No names should be off the table! They have like 30 MM in guaranteed contracts for 2024 and beyond. Get Judge and Correa, Fire up the Wheel-barrel Crane Kenney and act like the top 3 big market team you are!
Tim Dierkes
10:25
I agree, but this is not how the Ricketts fam has operated.
Autograph refusals
10:25
Over the years, I've been big leagued by Shawon Dunston and Jeff Samardzija.

Not the Shark.
Another true story
10:25
I saw Terry Adams drink 10 beers at a Cub convention in Peoria, IL.

The Cubs did a good job of buying some cheap relief arms last offseason (Robertson, Givens, Martin) and flipping them for future assets. Do you see any arms on the market this offseason they try a similar strategy with?
Tim Dierkes
10:27
I haven't parsed that market much yet.  Trevor May maybe?  Probably the only free agent reliever who has written for MLBTR...
