The course is reserved for HR LLMs only. The legal analysis course for LLMs is Common Law Reasoning and there is duplicative material in both.

Hi Adi! Can LLM students take the "Human Rights Advocacy: Legal Analysis and Writing" course or is it reserved for LLM HR students only?

You DO need to bid for one of these courses, so please plan accordingly

Hi Adi, I noticed that American Legal Studies are Mandatory Courses for LLM students, and I want to know whether I need to bid for one of them ( one is civil procedure and the other is constitutional law) or I can simply add one in my schedule without cost anything?
AvatarNell Novara

Rahmad, you would still need to obtain a waiver to be able to take these courses as co-requisites (which means you would take both courses at the same time)

Hi Adi and Neil, I am planning to bid for the Venture Capital and Early Stage Financing class, and since it have a Business Association prerequisite, do I need to obtain a waiver or it should be fine if I also take Business Association in the Fall?

The rules of the Via competition are that licensed attorneys cannot compete. I encourage you to explore your eligibility in case you surrender your license with the team coach, and we will check it with the organizers of the VIS.

Hi Adi! I am licensed to practice law in India. Does this disqualify me from applying to be on Northwestern's Vis Moot Team? It is important to mention that I am required to temporarily surrender my license while I am pursuing the LLM Program at Northwestern.

Hi- these evaluations are called "CTEs" (course and teacher evaluations) and here are details for accessing them: https://www.law.northwestern.edu/registrar/ctes/

Hi Adi! Where can we find the evaluations/reviews of students on the courses they took last semester?
AvatarAdi Altshuler

If there is no sufficient registration for the course, or if the professor is unable to teach for health reasons (rarely happens).

Hi Adi, under what circumstances will a course be cancelled?
AvatarNell Novara

Hi- you may view the spring curriculum now, which will allow you to see if a fall course is also being offered in the spring. Though the spring schedule is subject to change, we cannot know or guarantee whether any additional courses will be added to the spring schedule.

Hello, I am wondering if I failed to register for a popular class, any chance the same class will open in the spring semester?

I would advise to take courses that are of interest to you, regardless of the job market because employers, as long as you have taken solid mix of courses, will not hold against you your selection and will not on the other hand, hire you solely because of the mix of courses you have taken. I would advise to build on past experience/practice but also learn what is new and exciting in the legal profession and leave yourself opportunity to explore new avenues.

Hi Adi, Hi All, thank you for your time. When it comes to picking classes, is it more advisable to choose classes which are consistent with your career so far or should we choose classes in subjects that are more “sellable” on the job market? Should all the classes we take be consistent with each other (e.g. all classes related to corporate law) or is mixing possible (e.g. corporate and arbitration)? Thank you

Hi Yuichi- yes, you will have opportunities to satisfy the pro bono requirement through the Law School's robust Public Interest Program. Many students complete this requirement during the LLM program. For more information, you may contact Maureen Stratton, Pro Bono and Public Service Director or read more details here: https://www.law.northwestern.edu/academics/public-interest/service/

Hi, Adi. Do we have any opportunities at the Law School to satisfy the Pro Bono requirement for NY bar?

Hi Xuan- the clinic and practicum courses will be titled "Clinic: X," Clinic Practice: X, or Practicum: X"- these courses are non-biddable for LLM students. As far as the first-year courses, it is ONLY these seven specific courses that you cannot bid on. Thus, you can certainly bid on Contracts (LLM) or Basics of Contract Drafting, etc.

I have check the 2021 Fall and Spring Law School Schedule of Classes, but I have questions about the courses that we LLM students can’t enroll in.
courses identified by “Clinic Practice”
courses identified by “Practicum“
first year courses: Contracts, Civil Procedure, Criminal Law, Torts, Property, Constitutional Law, and Communication and Legal Reasoning
Above all, does it mean that we can’t bid on courses reffered to such words? Eg: There are courses called Clinic Practice: The United States Supreme Court and Clinic: Civil Rights Litigation, contract and Basics of Contract Drafting. All those classes we can’t take? How can we distinguish such courses?

This is a policy matter and I am happy to bring it to the attention of our Registration and Records team. From past experience, students did not lose points since students who enroll in courses that "cost" many points rarely drop them.

Hi Adi. Hope you are doing well. No offence but don't you think students should be allowed to gain their bid points back if they drop a course during Add/drop period. It's difficult to choose without trying the classes first. Kindly consider this a humble request.

Legal Ethics and Am Legal Studies Civ Pro meet the requirements. You will need to meet with me individually so we can make sure you can take all the necessary courses - it is quite challenging given that you need 26 credits (2 more than the NY bar) and many more from a limited list of courses.

Good morning Director Altshuler!
I plan to take the DC bar in July 2022 which means I need to complete 26 credits in the subjects required by the UBE.
Thus, I would like to ask for your guidance on how I can plan on scheduling and taking courses. Also, Legal ethics & American legal studies: civil procedure - meet the requirements for DC Bar?

There is a period of time after both rounds of bidding when you can drop classes/waitlist positions and retrieve points to save for the spring- this is called the "last chance period." You can also always add classes with open seats during the add/drop period at the beginning of the semester; these will not cost bid points. However, remember that the amount you bid on a class may not be the actual "cost" of the class, and you will receive any extra points back after each round of bidding. Thus, it is not likely that you would be in a position where you run out of bid points before the spring semester.

Hi! I'm a bit concerned about the bidding process, is it possible to lose all of our points and not have any for the spring semester?

I suggest you check the professor's reviews, called CTE. Different sections may have slight differences in what they cover but they are mostly covering the same material.

Legal Clinics are not usually open to LLMs, but if there is a clinic you are interested in, and there are open spaces after bidding, we can explore adding you to the course. Please contact me to express interest in a particular clinical course.

Hi Adi! I want to know when can we take part in legal clinics? How does it work with the Legal bonus that is required by NY BAR?
AvatarNell Novara

Yes, whatever points you bid to get on the waitlist will be removed from your account unless you drop the waitlist position during the last chance period.

Hi Adi, If I get off from the waitlist because someone drops their courses, does it still cost points? Thank you!
AvatarNell Novara

Hi- you have to take one course in Legal Ethics (2 credits), one course in American Legal Studies and one course in Legal Writing (already degree requirements for the LLM program). You then must take a minimum of 6 credits from the various subjects tested on the bar exam. Each course is 2-4 credits, so to meet this requirement, you'd likely need 2-3 of these courses. Note that you also must take a total of 24 credits for your degree. https://www.law.northwestern.edu/student-life/student-services/intlpro...

Most CLR sections do not conflict with courses LLM students take typically, except for Trial Advocacy (Int'l Track). We will make sure when assigning you to a section not to conflict with existing course.

Hi Adi! Can students find out in advance which sections of CLR classes we’ll be sorted to prior to bidding? So that we can design curriculum/bid for courses around the CLR schedule if possible. Thank you
