Yeah I think Miami's a decent fit if they want to go back to that well. They have some surplus starting pitching, could use outfield help (particularly someone who could play CF)
8:47
I don't think either of Thomas or McCarthy is headlining a deal for Pablo, but I could see something like swapping McCarthy for Braxton Garrett
As far as third base goes, the free agent market is terrible. There are going to be some non-tenders, probably Jeimer Candelario for instance
Twins could trade Gio Urshela

With Lawlar's newest shoulder injury, does Hazen start looking to the free agent SS market for a long term solution? Let Lawlar either lower his ceiling or burst back and make himself a coveted trade piece for the next contending Arizona team? Or should the team still count on him to be the short stop of the future?
Anthony Franco
8:48
I don't think the shoulder issue affects the long-term plans with Lawlar. No reason to think he can't bounce back
8:49
He's still their likeliest long-term SS for me, slow start in Double-A notwithstanding

what does a Carroll extension look like if one was to be hypothetically made right now?
Anthony Franco
8:49
Fascinating question, hadn't considered it
8:50
I don't think he's getting to Wander money. Not quite as clear a slam-dunk franchise player, a little less MLB track record
8:51
Reasonable case to beat Acuna though, particularly since we've seen some broken precedents for early-career extensions lately

Do you see McCarthy as a viable building block or more of a 4th OF in the long run?
Anthony Franco
8:52
Somewhere in between, kind of a soft regular for me
8:53
He had a really nice season, but he doesn't have huge power and there's enough swing-and-miss he feels more like a .260 hitter than a .280 type
Good defender throughout the outfield, decent offensive player. I like him and think he's fine as a bottom-of-the-lineup regular but he's not a core piece to build an organization around

Stone Garrett’s hitting power seems to be in top three in organization so how does he get at bats in crowded outfield?
Trey
8:53
What about OF Stone Garrett’s future fit?
Anthony Franco
8:54
I got a bunch of questions on Garrett too. For him, I don't think you need to force at-bats
8:55
He clearly has power but he struck out a lot and never walked in his early MLB look. He was good but not great in a hitter-friendly Triple-A environment after Miami let him get to minor league free agency
If he plays his way into the Jordan Luplow role, that's a win

Seems Hazen ought to study how Dipoto built his pen with castoffs. Can’t rebuild it with FA on a limited budget right?
Anthony Franco
8:56
Yeah I think they've tried already. Added a couple veterans (Melancon/Kennedy) who didn't pan out, but picked up Noé Ramirez on a minor league deal and claimed Kyle Nelson off waivers
They've worked to piece it together. Most of those guys are going to miss, just have to keep plugging away
8:57
I do think they'll add at least one solid reliever in free agency again though. Seth Lugo, Chris Martin types who can pitch in the middle innings

I had a down year and was injured for the majority of 2022.  I came back the last couple of weeks and hit fairly well.  Any future with the D-backs for me or should I ask to find greener pastures?
Anthony Franco
8:58
I feel like he gets traded this offseason. Don't see the path to AB's anymore

Have you ever been to Chase Field?
Anthony Franco

Nope, never been in the state in fact. Would love to get there at some point

4 left handed OF is great, but…Dbacks we’re very susceptible to left handed pitching.  Teams ran out every left handed starter and reliever with very good success against the Dbacks.  How do they fix that problem?
Anthony Franco
8:59
Hazen's already talked about a desire to add some right-handed help. I like the Martinez suggestion from earlier, maybe Brandon Drury could fit

D Backs had a good 2022 under Strom with development of pitchers and good debuts. Are they entering circle of trust of orgs good at developing pitching?
Anthony Franco
9:01
Need to see how the young guys develop over more than a month and a half but yeah, I think they should be in there. Nobody was better at pitching development than Houston with Strom there

Is it worth considering a Merill Kelly trade if it can net them a nice right handed bat of some sorts? Sign a solid middle rotation arm to replace him. Jameson Taillon type.
Anthony Franco
9:02
Eh, I guess he's kind of in the Walker territory. Never say never but it feels a little too cute at this point
Starting pitching's already a need, and Kelly looks like really good value

I’m not opposed to trading Ketel. Who would be some teams that you think would be interested in him and who also have some pieces that could be included in a return package?
Anthony Franco
9:04
Bunch of Ketel questions as well. I'm still very bullish on him offensively but I wonder how much longer they can stick with him up the middle. He didn't seem as athletic as he used to be when I watched him this year, and the metrics were unanimously down on him defensively
9:05
I don't expect them to trade him so shortly after an extension that basically cemented him as a franchise building block. But if they pivoted, the White Sox, Phillies, Angels, Red Sox all jump out as teams that could be interested

Jose Urquidy for Jake McCarthy. Who says no?

I like this one
