Given the Diamondbacks pitching struggles this past season, who are some starters and relievers that you think might be realistic targets this off-season?
Anthony Franco
9:07
Mentioned a few names earlier in the chat. The other thing I've wondered about is whether they'd take a shot on Kimbrel by promising him the ninth and kicking Melancon to a setup role

Are people sleeping on this team? Without serious upgrades from someone else they seem like the third best team in the division.
Anthony Franco
9:08
Would still have them fourth, even though I'm increasingly bullish on this roster. Division's tough

What does the catching look like if the D-Backs non-tender Carson Kelly?
Anthony Franco
9:09
Only think they NT Kelly if they're getting an established upgrade from outside
Contreras feels rich but isn't impossible. He'd certainly fit the mold of a better offensive catcher that Hazen has talked about wanting
They'll poke around the Murphy/Jansen trade markets, maybe take a run at Christian Vázquez in free agency
Brazen Hazen

How do you think we should use Sims after his TJ recovery? He could be a starter with a lengthier development but he could be a force out of the pen almost as soon as he's healthy. Given the dbacks reliever issues amd depth of MLB ready or near ready starters, is he more valuable to them in relief on a quicker timeline?
Anthony Franco
9:10
Have to imagine they're planning to give him another shot as a starter. Using a top 35 overall pick on a guy you're immediately throwing in relief isn't great process
9:11
Can he do it? I don't know. He never got a chance at Mississippi State. But I expect they'll give him the opportunity

Why didn't D backs sell high on Christian Walker this year? I was kind of surprised. Good player and gives the lineup pop but I didn't think he was worth holding onto at what could be peak value performance-wise and timing wise at the deadline
Anthony Franco
9:12
He didn't really turn things on until the second half. Had a solid first few months but I don't think they were getting great offers at the deadline
Teams increasingly dislike low-OBP sluggers (especially right-handed ones) who are at the bottom of the defensive spectrum
Even though Walker's a great defender at first
Hmmm
9:13
Does a trade with the Jays for Gurriel or Hernandez solve their need for a RH bat?
Anthony Franco
9:13
Would need to commit fully to playing them at DH
Don't think Lourdes has the bat for that. Teoscar maybe

Since the 40 man will have to be set soon, and currently having 6 players on 60 day IL, who will most likely be dropped other than Kennedy and Davies? Also have 2 to 4 that needed to be added to protect from Rule V draft.
Anthony Franco
9:15
Can preemptively DFA Caleb Smith, Keynan Middleton and Reyes Moronta if they're going to get non-tendered
9:16
Not sure Jose Herrera survives the winter on the 40-man, although he was solid in Reno

Can’t trade Ahmed right? He’s making too much $$ for all glove, no bat. Do they keep him this one last year or did Perdomo do enough to keep starting SS now that Ahmed is healthy?
Anthony Franco
9:18
Yeah definitely no value at $10.375. I've kind of pushed swapping Paul DeJong and Max Stassi between the Cardinals and Angels
If you wanted to throw Ahmed there instead of DeJong, guess that could work too

Amed Rosario would be a nice fit, what’s it take to get him? Guardians reportedly looking for LHRP, Catcher, 1B, is there a match?
Anthony Franco
9:20
They're not going to pigeon-hole into needing any of those specific areas for Rosario. I don't see a great fit with Arizona on any of those specifically anyways
9:21
But yeah, I generally agree that Rosario's a viable trade target. There's not huge surplus value there, could probably pull him for a couple guys in the 10-15 range of the farm system that Cleveland likes

Is there a future for Seth Beer anywhere? Or was his first week or so just a fluke?
Anthony Franco
9:22
The fact that they didn't give him a look until really late in 2021 while he was tearing up Reno and Walker was struggling makes me think they're just not super bullish
Then he repeated Triple-A and wasn't as good

I say keep only 4 from 2022 bullpen—Mantiply, Nelson, Melancon and Ginkel, and convert Jameson to a bullpen role.  Agree or disagree?
Anthony Franco
9:24
I wouldn't abandon starting yet with Drey. As far as the relievers, yeah, I agree those are the only guys who should be guaranteed spots next year

Kendrick obviously loves the youth movement and the low salaries associated with it. But until he spends money on free agent pitching the bullpen will be the team’s Achilles heel. AZ deserves better. He is the lowest profile owner in MLB. Also one of the worst, if not the worst.
Anthony Franco
9:26
Would be nice to see them push spending closer to pre-pandemic levels at this point, yeah. At the same time, I don't think building a bullpen largely through free agency is a great allocation of resources to begin with. Need a couple guys back there but they'll have to hit on some cheaper pickups as well
9:27
From a broader spending perspective, there's a lot of long-term flexibility, particularly once Bumgarner's salary drops from $23MM to $14MM in 2024

I strenuously object to the idea that Arizona's owner is worse than Oakland's!
Anthony Franco
9:27
Ha yes I think Kendrick is below-average but not the worst
ScottAZ
9:28
Do Dbacks have enough trade value players to pry Clase, Romano or Doval away for their closer?
Anthony Franco
9:28
Can't see Clase going anywhere right now. That's probably also true of Romano. He's so good and Toronto's bullpen is already wobbly
9:29
I'm not out on Camilo Doval as a long-shot trade candidate but it's definitely not likely and will be especially tough to pull off in-division
