No, I don't think they trade him. I'd think the Yankees would be the best suitors, but they seem to be more interested in Gray.

Hypothetical question: a position player is traded mid-game to the opposing team after starting the game. Is the player allowed to play in that same game for the opposing team?
Dave Cameron
12:13
No.
JK
12:14
The Astros can't stand pat on the starting pitching market, right? Verlander or Gray seem like a necessity.
Dave Cameron
12:14
Why? Keuchel is good, McCullers is good, Morton is pitching well, Fiers is fine, and McHugh is coming back.
12:15
Could they use Gray? Of course. But they don't "need" any of these guys.
The old professor
12:15
Does Jorge Mateo work as the centerpiece in a trade for Onny Gray?  Also, does Ellsbury for Samardzjia make sense if the Yankees pony up the salary difference?
Dave Cameron
12:15
No squared.
TJ
12:15
If Verlander was on waivers in August, would he get claimed?  Would Tigers let him walk for free if so?
Dave Cameron
12:15
No one's taking that contract in full.
Moltar
12:15
Will we see a more robust August trading period than normal, especially among veteran hitters?
Dave Cameron
12:16
Yeah, I think part of the lack of movement on some of these guys is that everyone realizes a lot of the guys on the block will clear waivers.
Time is a precious commodity before the deadline; why waste it on someone you can trade for in August?
TJ
12:16
Is Florial/Mateo/Acevedo too light for Gray?
Dave Cameron
12:16
No, that sounds about right.
Matt
12:16
Why isn't Jay Bruce getting any interest?
Dave Cameron
12:17
He's a bat-first player who projects for a 104 wRC+ rest of season. He's just not that good.
Jason
12:17
Regarding Darvish - would the Dodgers really have to include two of Verdugo/Buehler/Alvarez to get a deal done?  If you were the Rangers, would you take one of the three plus some other parts (Calhoun plus ?) for a rental?
Dave Cameron
12:18
The Dodgers wouldn't move any of those three for a rental.
And I don't think the kind of offer the Dodgers would make would incentivize Texas to move him.
TJ
12:19
If Tex deals Darvish wouldn't they want to listen on Hamels? I can't see Hamels value going anywhere but down even with his control.
Dave Cameron
12:19
Not if they think they can re-sign Darvish this winter.
Could be a trade and then we'll bring you back next year situation.
Nate
12:19
What could the Giants realistically get in a trade for Samardzija?
Dave Cameron
12:19
If someone takes the whole contract, maybe a B or C prospect or two. If they eat some, maybe something real.
Moltar
12:20
Most of the chatter about the Dodgers acquiring pitching comes with the caveat that they don't need another starter to reach the postseason. But shouldn't that mean they should be planning now for their postseason rotation? Even if fully healthy, Kershaw has been forced to start on short rest too many times in recent memory, and the Dodgers should leverage their resources to make sure that does not need to happen again this year
Dave Cameron
12:20
Alex Wood and Rich Hill are good. Kenta Maeda is fine. They don't need to start Kershaw on short rest even without another starter.
Brian Cashman
12:20
What's your view on the Yankees seemingly feeling more comfortable trading outfield prospects (Rutherford, maybe Florial now) because they already have Judge, Frazier, and Fowler as young outfielders? Should that matter when deciding which of their top prospects to trade?
Dave Cameron
12:21
Don't think that's really a factor.
They traded Rutherford before his hype wore off.
Derek
12:21
Which of the Cubs' young, valuable, major league pieces would you be most willing to part with as part of a package for a controllable starting pitcher?
Dave Cameron
12:21
I'd have traded Schwarber a while ago.
But they like him more than I do.
JB
12:22
Complete a fair transaction.  Cubs acquire Verlander and J Wilson from Tigers for _______.
Dave Cameron
12:22
Depends entirely on how much money DET is sending.
Aron

Is currently-projected-to-be-worth-2.4 wins Jarrod Dyson a candidate for a QO? Seems unlikely, but seems like a win-win - either he declines it and the Mariners get a pick or he accepts it and Dipoto has a coveted speed/defense guy on a one year deal headed into his decline years.
Dave Cameron
12:23
No way he gets a QO.
James
12:23
Why will Sonny Gray command such a big return? He's never been worth 4 wins in a season - and is projected to be worth 3 this year - and was hurt last year. I think I'm missing something about why he's so coveted.
Dave Cameron
12:23
He's an above-average big league pitcher. That is valuable.
Mike Milligan
12:24
Thanks for the chat. I've agreed with Friedman hanging on to prospects up until now but....Kershaw is a ? right now. Hill and Wood are great but injury risks. Dodgers need Darvish. Pitching prospects get hurt too so send them Alvarez or Buehler and go for it.  I know you disagree
