Ed Bouchette's Steelers chat: 2.19.19

Ed Bouchette

The Patriots did it this year without either of them.
International steeler
2:13
Bryant and mike Wallace are free agents why not bring them back
Ed Bouchette
2:13
Are you masquerading as Mr. Big Chest?
Guest

Was there any chance going into this meeting between Art Rooney and Antonio Brown that Brown's relationship with the team might be salvaged? Or was this basically an exit interview?
Ed Bouchette
2:13
Sounds like an exit interview. Notice the coach did not attend.
AB Fan
2:14
Ed, are you personal issues with AB getting in the way of your strong anti-AB opinions and related propaganda???
Ed Bouchette
2:15
I have no personal issues with Antonio Brown. He called me a name in training camp, later apologized to me in person.  I've written facts and analysis on him lately, in particular that the Steelers needed to trade him. Now it looks as though they will.

AB is now demanding more guaranteed money. Who would want him knowing he might sit on team he’s traded to
Ed Bouchette
2:16
No one is going to sign him to a new contract that guarantees him anything. Not unless they are insane.
ALB
2:16
Have you watched any of the Alliance games? The quality of play actually isn't bad, but its funny how crowds of about 5000 are made to sound like 50,000.
Ed Bouchette
2:17
I glanced quickly at one on the first weekend. That was enough. I don't watch all football just for the sake of watching football.
Sean
2:17
Do you think Brown is purposely trying to tank his trade value so the Steelers will be forced to release him? He's talking like he's a free agent, not someone under contract for 3 more years.
Ed Bouchette
2:17
As I've written, the Steelers won't be forced to release him. At the very least, they could trade him for a conditional 7th round pick in 2020 to make sure they send him where they want and he is not free to sign anywhere.
AugustWest
2:18
Which of their own free-agents do you think the Steelers will re-sign?
Ed Bouchette
2:18
I don't think too many. I'd sign Chickillo if his price is right. I'd also try to sign Ramon Foster to a 1 or 2-year deal, but he may find something better.

Looking ahead, how do you see the franchise replacing the void that #84 leaves?
Ed Bouchette
2:19
Players leave all the time. Sign a vet UFA as I mentioned earlier and draft one. You can still win without Antonio Brown.

Ed, you've covered the team a long time.  When did the "Steeler Way" become more myth than reality?
Ed Bouchette
2:20
It's gone a bit off track the past few years. They now have a chance to head it back in the right direction
Bobby
2:20
Do you see the Steelers getting an unproven WR in the draft or signing a veteran in free agency?
Ed Bouchette
2:20
Both
ALB
2:20
How much do teams rely on the recommendations of college coaches when scouting players?
Ed Bouchette
2:21
If they know the coach and trust him, they will lean on him for the intangible things, character, etc.

Ed, any chance (in your opinion) that the "21st Century Pro Athlete" is just more prone or even acclimated to becoming a "prima donna" than in the past? Expect it to just get worse with ensuing generations?
Ed Bouchette
2:21
Don't paint them all based on a few

The Rams made the Super Bowl with a grossly overweight C.J. Anderson taking carries from Todd Gurley. How does that affect Bell’s market value?
Ed Bouchette
2:22
I would think it doesn't enhance it.
Dr. Phill
2:22
Ed,  Your take on how Art II has handled things?  I think his Dad and Grand Dad would not be pleased.  Didn't time but respect is respect and starts at the top. Thank you.
Ed Bouchette
2:23
Both previous presidents had many issues to deal with. Different, but it wasn't all smooth sailing.
Nate L
2:23
What are your thoughts on Tomlin changing or not changing his coaching style with respect to toleration for future AB-like behavior? Think he stays the course? Kinda hard to change coaching style 12 years in right?
Ed Bouchette
2:23
I've seen Mike learn from the past, so Antonio Brown may have brought a lesson that he will embrace.
Mtsteel
2:24
Ed, thanks for your time. I really feel the Steelers get robbed if the accept anything less than a 2 for AB. I know all the talk, hes this and that. Ok so trade him but dont let all the talk devalue his production. Hes not career criminal, hes a future HOF WR and a Diva  Thoughts and thanks
Ed Bouchette
2:24
You cannot bring Antonio Brown back. That's where you start.
Rob
2:25
Ed, Did you see all of this coming?
Ed Bouchette
2:26
From what point in time? We saw the deterioration of the situation as the season unfolded, but I don't think anyone could have predicted he'd walk out on the team at the end.
Michael B
2:26
Love the Chat Ed.  As part of the trade clause can a team that is interested in trading for AB insist that he is examined by a neurologist or a psychiatrist. Mr Big Chest is out of control.
Ed Bouchette
2:26
Yes, they would have that right, I do believe, as part of a physical.
Jim66
2:26
Will team mates begin to openly turn on AB now? Will ABs actions make others who want out start to act foolishly?
Ed Bouchette
2:28
If they do, that's a dangerous game. LeGarrette Blount and James Harrison go their ways when the team released them during the season. I would think if something like that would happen again, the Steelers might have learned their lesson and instead suspend them.

Brown and Burnett want out. Munchak left in a lateral move. Bell would rather miss $14.5 than be a part of the Steelers last year.  Just a unique set of circumstances or are the Steelers not as desirable an org to be a part of as they used to be?
