Ed Bouchette's Steelers chat: 4.2.19

Good afternoon, let's begin
Mark

Love your chat. If the Steelers aren't able to draft White or Bush, do you think it will be hard for them to get someone who can have a big impact in 2019?
Ed Bouchette
1:57
Not at all; in fact I don't think they should try to trade up to get an inside linebacker. This draft is chock full of outside linebackers, which they also need maybe even more so, and defensive linemen. I know they have 2 good starters at DE ans signed Tyson Alualu but I wouldn't hesitate to grab another if he's the best on your board.

Does signing Jordan Berry to a new contract make sense for this team? They turn around and invite another punter to compete in camp. Why not wait til camp ends before signing a new multi-year deal?
Ed Bouchette
1:58
I was surprised, as were others, the Steelers re-signed him.

Did you go to the Pirates home opener yesterday?
Ed Bouchette
1:58
Darn, missed another. I covered home openers for many years and actually glad I missed this one.
Kevin

Hi Ed. Is Mason Rudolph a serious replacement in 2 years
Ed Bouchette
1:59
Nobody knows yet, not me, not the coaching staff, not Mason. We should find out a little more about him this year.
Kyle

If both Devin's are gone, who are the next names at ILB we should look at?  The Alabama ILB doesn't seem to fit the bill of what we truly need.
Ed Bouchette
1:59
Certainly none in the first round and maybe not in the second. Move on and draft good players.

hi Ed, I understand it would not be smart to over pay if you need to trade up in the draft to get a Devin. However, Do they almost have to? It is such a glaring need and made this defense work.
Ed Bouchette

They did sign a guy to play the position in free agency, taking the heat off having absolutely to get one no matter what. Look at their outside linebackers and tell me they won't need one there soon too.

The ship has likely sailed on Artie Burns and Brian Allen, but what about Cam Sutton?  Has he peaked or is there still room for improvement?  Could he still become Haden's heir?
Ed Bouchette
2:01
This is a big summer for Cam

What is your assessment of the Browns at this point?  How do you compare them to 'em Stillers?
Ed Bouchette
2:02
They have won the off season. There is a big difference  between that and winning during the season. They have good reason to be optimistic but I'd still make the Steelers the favorites in the AFC North

Your best guess, do the Steelers end up using all ten draft picks, or will they get rid of some to move up at some point.  And if they move up, will it be first round?
Ed Bouchette
2:03
They rarely draft 10, although I never understood their past reasoning that they had too many draft choices so they'd probably package some in a trade. I do understand if that trade makes sense but not to trade just to get rid of draft picks. They compete with other teams to sign rookies after the draft, why not just draft one or two of them so you can be sure you get the ones you want? I would stay put in the first round and maybe try to move higher in the second.

Do you believe with the slow starts the team has at the beginning of the season that starters should play more in pre-season games.  Its seems the starters have become divas and play a lot less than they had in the past.
Ed Bouchette
2:04
Most every NFL team treats preseason games that way, and some actually get off to fast starts

hi Ed, I have a clever thought... since the Browns & Raiders might be good this season, maybe the Steelers will take them seriously & will have no problem beating them, right?
Ed Bouchette
2:04
They don't play the Raiders this season, unless it comes in the playoffs.

What are your current AFC North rankings?
Ed Bouchette
2:05
I'd go Steelers, Browns, Ravens, Bengals but check back with me after the draft.

Ed, Thanks for the chat.  I saw one mock draft that had the steelers taking Marquise Brown (AB's cousin) in the first round. I thought that was both ironic and a stretch.  Your thoughts?
Ed Bouchette
2:07
I thought the only way he was connected to the Steelers was because of AB. Otherwise no one would mention it. But he just had  lisfranc surgery so forget it.

Hi Ed - What are your early thoughts on FA signing Donte Moncrief? Seems he could do well with a real QB. What do you think?
Ed Bouchette
2:07
It's a good signing that adds depth and possible No. 2 WR if that's not James Washington. Still need to draft a WR and TE, in my opinion. I could see both in the third round

Good Afternoon Ed - Thanks again for these chats and insights.  Any news on some contract extensions?  It would be nice to some out of the way before the draft.
Ed Bouchette
2:08
Nothing, but one of these days Ben will get signed.

The NFL sometimes has a weird sense of humor, or is it KARMA that AB and Vonteze are now teammates and best buddies.
Ed Bouchette
2:08
Burfict might not even make the team with his injury history, and don't fall for that best buddy stuff
Blawnox Bill
2:09
Did you get any final 4 teams right?
Ed Bouchette
2:09
Who are they?
RyanSLC
2:09
Hi Ed do you know if extending Joe Haden is a on the Steelers list of things to get done? Unless we take a CB in round 1 i dont see any reason not to do it.
Ed Bouchette
2:10
Those things usually happen later, after the draft and even into training camp. It would have to be on their agenda.

Any word on Artie?  Hard to imaging anyone still thinks he's useful.
Ed Bouchette
2:10
Judging by what Mike Tomlin said of him recently, he's not much on their radar. Only way for him to get back on it is to play up to their previous expectations in camp

Hello Ed, I like these new "free-drama No AB No LB" Steelers. It is time to focus on missing pieces. Let's say they get the ILB they want and a solid Rookie WR in the draft, How close would be The Steelers to be considered contenders again?
