I'm confused as to why Dylan Smith ranks 17th in Detroit's system without a pro pitch, but Hill and his 30+% 2021 K rate doesn't rank at all. Can you explain the difference in ranking between two pitchers who feel pretty similar to a fan?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:25
Liked Hill enough to HM him, agree it's a decent-enough four-pitch mix that he could make a spot start if he had to, but ultimately Smith has better breaking stuff than Hill (which you can't teach), he's younger and more projectable so there's hope he might eventually throw harder, and he has a longer developmental timeline than Hill who the Tigers left off their 40-man and exposed to the rule 5 this offseason.

Are you higher on Adell or Marsh at this point? Assuming the angels move one for pitching which one you would prefer to keep?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:27
I'm taking Marsh but it's close, I'd still 60 both of them fwiw

With the CBA still in limbo, what would you put the odds of there being an international draft for next years class? Thanks
Eric A Longenhagen
12:31
When I was working the international list in November, it was insinuated to me that a draft might be put in place sooner than I'd been guessing, which was either in 2023 or 2024. I think it'll take longer to put together a format for it than people assume and the sooner it's implemented the more blowback you're gonna get as an industry since these kids and the orgs have already come to an agreement about lots of deals for the next two classes

When will you guys be releasing your 2022 top 100 list? Thanks again for all the prospect lists, it’s a great way to start the new year!
Eric A Longenhagen
12:32
Prospect week tends to start a week and a day after the super bowl and the 100 comes out in the middle of it

12:32
Do you see Dylan Coleman as a potential future closer? Seems like his stuff has really ticked up this past year.
Eric A Longenhagen
12:33
yeah, went from 93-96 in college to 88-91 with SD, then exploded with KC sitting 97+. No, probably not a closer though.

If Riley Greene didn't have the strike out issues, would you at least think about ranking him higher than Tork?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:33
me, KG, Brendan and Tess were split 2/2 on who should be first. KG and I agree that it barely matters, their evaluations don't change at all and I wish folks would stop fixating on ordinal rankings already.

Hey, thoughts on the Diamondbacks not protecting Matt Tabor? Do you think its a mistake or do you think his stock fell significantly enough last year for it to be justified?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:34
Felt fine, it's as simple as us being too high on him and pitchers being volatile in general. Nobody would have predicted that Levi Kelly and Tabor would have had the years they did, it's just what happens with pitching all the time.

Will Corbin Carroll remain a 60FV for you or will the injury knock him down?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:35
hell yes
we would've slid him already if we were scared by it, we tend to update the lists pretty frequently in-season

I was a little surprised no Perlaza on Cubs list after power showing esp in second half combined w/decent bat-to-ball. What's he lacking? Is it just pressure on bat now that hes in the OF?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:35
you nailed it there at the end

Looking to change careers… Think I’d be a good fit with Arte Moreno?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:36
probably, want me to set you up a lunch ate with him (i assume you're buying tho)

Are Quinn Priester and Asa Lacy similar pitchers?  Which do you project more positively.
Eric A Longenhagen
12:38
Somewhat similar in a sense that they have monster stuff with some strike-throwing issues, though their repertoires are different (Priester is fb/crv/cutter, Lacy fb/sld/ch and like 6% cutters in 2021)
12:39
I think at this point I'd take Priester. Lacy only had a small window of throwing what I'd consider a starter's rate of strikes, Lacy kinda tracking like Carlos Rodon. Preiester has one of the best curveballs I've ever seen and his new cutter is good too, repertoire has a walker buehler look to it now, albeit without such a flat approach angle due to the difference in size

Matt Fraizer show up on your radar this season?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:39
yes
Bill
12:39
Any word on the health of Emerson Hancock? Does he have top of the rotation potential for you or is he more of a mid rotation guy for you?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:40
more mid-rotation for me. fastball shape limits its utility enough that it's tough to see him being a 5 war guy
BJ
12:40
Brieske and Flores were big surprises ranked so high on the Tigers list. Strongly doubt anyone else will have them as high, you guys could look real smart in a year or so!
Eric A Longenhagen
12:41
or really dumb, who knows? There doesn't tend to be any sort of accountability for this stuff in retrospect

12:41
What improvements/adjustments would Bryson Stott need to make to become a future all star
Eric A Longenhagen
12:42
I think he might already be there. Body is better, lower half flexibility has improved since college, throwing stroke more typical now. I don't know if he's a perpetual all star candidate but it would not surprise me if he made a few. lefty-hitting shortstops with this kinda power are rare. Brandon Crawford and....?
Neil
12:42
Are there any prospects you think you might be the highest on I'm the industry?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:43
That's a thing for folks to assess on their own, imo.
Mike
12:45
Have you traveled abroad and if so what was your favorite country?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:46
No. I was brought up by parents who talked about the idea of international travel with a lot of fear, so we mostly went to the jersey shore. As an adult, my aversion to paperwork and any sort of administrative task means i don't have an updated passport. I have a long eventual wishlist (DR, BC, Ireland, Japan, Cuba, etc.) but right now am focused on the baseball calendar, which really doesn't end.

12:46
Do you see Greg Jones getting OF reps next season? Their MIF seems set for the foreseeable future w/ Franco & Lowe. Not to mention they still have have Walls, Brujan, Edwards and a million other switch-hitting MIF prospects behind them.
Eric A Longenhagen
12:47
Yes, but I'd assume Brujan and X get them, too. I think Jones has a better chance of playing above-avg infield defense than Brujan

12:48
Am I wrong to be skeptical of Dylan Lesko as a viable big league starter?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:49
If your bar is that low then yeah, that's a little extreme. If you think you'd rather have someone more projectable and who has a better natural breaking ball, that seems reasonable to me since that's also how i feel. just means i have lesko toward the middle of rd 1 rather than in the top 10
