I became a little more apprehensive about Baty after seeing him in the Fall League (swing playability stuff) but yes, think he projects as an everyday third baseman. Vargas I have in as more of a good 1B/3B role player than a slam dunk every day, every inning guy. The Dodgers list went up at the site last week and there's excruciating detail there.

When analysing any player's data, is there a way to identify hot/cold hitter or pitchers?  Not year to year, but within a year, figure out streaking hitters, or pitchers who warm up as the year goes along?
Eric A Longenhagen

Not within what I have access to (at least at the minor league level) but teams have internal graphs and charts like this: Max Fried - Graphs - - Pitching | FanGraphs Baseball
that can show you periods of velo uptick, or rolling, most-recent 50-balls-in-play exit velos, stuff like that

Any reason Parker Messick is not being talked about in the first round?  Heathy, dominant track record w/FL State and Team USA.  Reminds me of former first rounder Ethan Small.

I'm with ya, think he should be in the mix in the late first sandwich round area.

What do you think about Kirilloff's swing?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:50
It's always been kinda weird to me but he made it work. Front side really opens up, makes him very dangerous against stuff on the inner half, he showed enough ability to get fully extended and cover the outer third and enough strength to drive the ball the other way even though he was opening up so much and I bought that it would work. Eddie Rosario same thing. Again with Kiriloff the underlying issue is that he swings at everything.

Matt Brash was sent down to become a bullpen guy right? So he should be called back up and hopefully placed in a critical roll? His stuff should dominate over 1 or 2 innings. Thoughts?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:50
Totally agree

Is there any sort of respectable ceiling to Bryan de la Cruz?  I watch the Marlins a lot, and he seems to deserve more playing time... Not likely to ever be Mr. Powerbat, but high average and solid all-around has value, no?  Is there something about him that the average guy doesn't know about?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:53
I dig him, 40'd him as a prospect and still think that's the role he ends up playing: righty-hitting, better fit in the corner, not typical power for a corner. Definitely a good ballplayer, just not a first division regular or anything like that.

are they coming back? I loved em!

My goal every Friday is to have either a) a pod segment, b) a chat, c) a stream, or d) a Yeoman's Work, and I'm glad to know the box score recap is a thing you want in there.

Thanks for keeping the team lists going. Was a little confused about DeLoach - he was a 40FV on yesterday's Prospect Notes, but today a 35+?

miscommunication between Tess and I, my fault

I'm assuming it's too early to really draw conclusions, but Kahlil Watson's K rate is unexpected, right? What's driving that?
Eric A Longenhagen

Was a little over-aggressive during my FSL look. Huge physical tools are still there.

How do you scout a player at a mid-major differently than you would a player at a high-major school?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:58
changes how much confidence you have in his statistical performance, but the visual scouting part is largely the same

Are you liking the depth of the Tiger's farm system more this year?  Looks like the industry has under rated a few prospects like Beau Briske.
Eric A Longenhagen

I thought we did okay with Briske: 2022 Top Prospects | THE BOARD | FanGraphs

I for sure need a fresh report on Carlos Mendoza.
Glad Colt Keith is playing well (I think he was a KG pick to click?)

The little I saw of their Extended group in Florida was meg, though. Kinda dug Bastidas and Chacon, Bauza too (though he's older)
Lou Barlow

I know maybe he’s not in your purview any more but do you think Yepez can be a full-time regular as a DH, occasional corner infielder in the bigs? He’s raking.
Eric A Longenhagen
1:02
in short: have a 40 on him, which at 1B/DH means he's a lower OBP guy who still hits 20+ bombs when he plays a lot. Christian Walker type of career is in play, defense maybe not as good as walker

What has happened to PAC-12 baseball? The high end is good but the conference as a whole has fallen off. ASU and USC in particular are mediocre. I was at a recent USC game and the *reported* attendance was 210.

ASU *sucks*

Instability at U of A even after they sustained Omaha-level quality for so long is very disappointing, Oregon State is at least consistently good.
1:04
The gap between the ACC and SEC's understanding of player dev and tech implementation and the PAC's understanding (except, as I understand it, at UCLA and Oregon St) is vast, it would seem.

When an org is working with a pitcher to optimize their pitch mix/shape/approach, do they work with every pitcher on their farm or just some?  I read a story about Matt Brash where he said the Padres never gave him feedback (just let him do his thing) but everything changed in Seattle.  I don’t know if this a big indictment of the Padres development program, or just that he wasn’t considered a big enough prospect at the time.
Eric A Longenhagen
1:05
It's an indictment of the Padres

Know you mentioned seeing the Tarpons, any new dope on Alexander Vargas? Particularly if his physicality has improved at all.

It has not, i am bumming

Guys like Kelenic, Downs, Bleday etc who had TOUGH 2021 seasons in MLB or upper MiLB set to bounce back or nah?
Eric A Longenhagen
1:07
Kelenic seems in his own head, often visibly frustrated with himself. No idea what's gonna happen there. Bleday I think is a corner platoon bat, Downs I think has huge bust risk at this point.

I know the Padres list isn't out yet (hint, hint) but I feel like Wood and Mears are often linked as big OFs with power and some swing and miss. To me Wood has a viable hit tool, which gives him a path to more well-rounded profile while Mears's ceiling is more Hunter Renfroe (without the platoon split). Thoughts?
Eric A Longenhagen
1:08
Agreed, Mears is a pretty standard corner power prospect with hit tool risk, Wood is a freak who is proving doing some ridiculous stuff right now.
