There are some scouts who just won't go there anymore. There are unreported stories of gunpoint muggings and such. It's a bad situation.

Angels farm is weak overall and top heavy, but is much better than when the year started. Fair assessment?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:10
Probably. I wouldn't call it "heavy up top" unless you really like Matt Thaiss and I do not. Jones I like, always have. Ward was better in AFL than people expected (guys were putting 30s on him during the season), Marsh is the guy I expect to break out next year.

Courtney Hawkins looks like a lost cause as a hitter. Any reason to think he could convert back to the mound? I seem to recall reading that his arm strength has backed up a bit since he was drafted.
Eric A Longenhagen
2:11
Doesn't have the athleticism for that, in my opinion.

Do you think Vladdy Jr has the tools to be a regular eventually?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:11
I spoke with several people (outside the org, one in) that think he's in the big leagues at 20.
So, yes.
And I was skeptical of his year as it was happening, for the record. I'm on board now.

Hey Eric love the work you do. What do you think is currently the most deep and talented position group? My opinion is 2B given how many of the SS's likely won't stick at short.
Eric A Longenhagen
2:12
That's a good question and, especially if you think Gleyber moves there, Happ and Moncada stay there, you might be right.

Who of the Padres 16-17 international signing class will be the first to make it to the majors?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:13
Probably Morejon but of the bats I think it's Rosario.
And yes, I'm including Ona.

Can Gabriel Mejia become Billy Hamilton?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:14
I think there's a chance, yes. I'm probably the biggest Cheetah fan in the public sphere, though.

What is your overall grade on Jacob Barnes? He was never really a prospect list darling, especially since becoming a reliever a while ago, but there he was in MIlwaukee last year, throwing 95+ with a really great looking cutter/slider thing.
Eric A Longenhagen
2:14
Loved him in Fall League for what he was. Mid-90s, control, 55 slider. Really solid relief piece.

Eric A Longenhagen

Regarding Brandon Woodruff, I've heard that he's a control but not command guy. What are the signals that signify that this is case? Is it visual scouting of where the catcher sets up or is it something more statistical?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:16
Clubs definitely have ways of measuring command for minor leaguers now but they are loathe to share them so I assume what you're hearing about Woodruff (which I think is fair) is probably visual.

Dillon Tate - prospects for this prospect?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:17
Very much a fluid situation. If he is what he was in the AFL then he's a 4/5 starter or reliever. If he gets back to what he wwas last spring he's a potential #2.

Dom Smith can't win - if the power shows up in a big way this year, people are just going to say it was because he was at Vegas. How hard is it to judge true power in such hitter friendly environments, and do you think Smith's bat speed and physical maturation will allow his power to play up more?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:18
Yeah, the numbers might be crazy in Las Vegas and it might behoove the Mets to make sure he doesn't develop any bad habits as a result of the hitting environment there.
2:19
Smith has always been more of a 18-22 homer guy at peak for me with like 40 doubles and good D at first. His weight loss is, to me, a sign the latter is more in play than anything else.

Have the Braves signed or tried to sign any notable international free agents since July?
Eric A Longenhagen
2:20
Not that I'm aware but I expect them to be in on Robert once he clears.
If he clears. No idea what's going to happen with the Cuba situation under this new administration.

What are your thoughts on teams assigning young guys to Low-A to start the year to get them extra PT vs. holding them in extended ST to wait for the SS affiliates? The White Sox seem to have gotten themselves into trouble with this the last couple of years by starting guys at a level they obviously weren't prepared for.
Eric A Longenhagen
2:21
Each player is a unique snowflake that requires specific consideration. But yeah I think CHW has been a little aggressive with assignments. New farm director there, though. So maybe some changes.

What does AJ Reed need to do to succeed in MLB? His MiLB track record seems too strong to think he can't be productive at the next level.
Eric A Longenhagen
2:23
If he can get to his power because his approach is so good, then he's an everyday guy. Even at .250/.350/.450 that's an average 1B, no?
Be patient. I've always been lighter on Reed but I think he's going to be fine.

I know you hate to call players out, but can you think of instances where a player's development failure lies squarely on the player? Can you name a name?

Which of Luke Weaver, Joe Musgrove, Reynaldo Lopez, Brent Honeywell will be most successful in 2018?
