Wait y'all are joining on names as opposed to ids!?!?!
Alex Eisert
3:41
Sometimes the IDs aren't available for one of the datasets sob
Davy Andrews
3:42
Right. It gets tricky when the data is coming from different places.
Alex Eisert

Razzball is helpful for that, but it doesn't have every player usually.

It's especially weird that the second player named Boog was a completely different type of player

Double Wanders Franco was a thing for a hot second when they were both (admittedly different) levels of prospect

Wander Franco’s dad and brothers are also named Wander

As somebody who works in databases all day, I couldn't agree more that everything and everybody need to be referred to by randomly generated IDs. the world would be so much simpler

While ZiPS keeps MLBAM IDs
when I *tell* ZiPS to project someone, it's their name, not their MLBAM ID
because I don't have all those memorized
So everybody has to get have a unique name!

Settle a debate for me: is a team a defending champion until they are eliminated from the next championship? or when a new champion is crowned? For example, say the Astros for whatever reason implode, gets mathematically eliminated from the playoffs in September. Who is the defending champion from September til the last game of the world series? You can't "defend" a championship if you're eliminated?
Davy Andrews
3:44
I love how pedantic this is. They're the reigning champion until someone else wins it, I guess, but the defending champion as long as there's air in their lungs?
Alex Eisert
3:43
That was a great look at Marinaccio's sweeper. You could really see the SSW

A team is never a defending champion because the championships are not directly contested.
The instant a team wins the championship, they're last year's champion and there is no reigning champion
The actual achievement is culminated in one infinitely small triumphant moment

I'm disappointed in you Alex.

I don't know what this is referring to but I strongly agree.

Thinking of the later games, do the Dodgers work out a long term deal with Urias? Does James Outman become the dark horse rookie no one expected?

I guess a problem with opening day is that now when your team loses it counts :(

Good point Dan, while you're probably technically right, "defending champion" is very much a real concept in team sports vernacular.
AvatarDan Szymborski

Remember, technically correct is the best kind of correct!

If you send your young pitcher to the minors and tell them to only let him pitch on Sundays for a month does that limit his innings effectively or does it prevent them from developing the endurance needed to pitch in a MLB rotation
