Moncada almost lost a (fairly high, chopping) ground ball in the lights, I've never seen that before
Gust
5:30
Eric, have you seen the new NESN scorebug?
Eric A Longenhagen
5:31
Nah I have the Reds broadcast on, gimem a sec
Wow, the least efficient use of space possible
5:32
Andrew Abbott's stride looks shorter and more cross bodied

Justin Crawford, his second ground ball single of the day.  Is speedy groundballers the new inefficiency?
Eric A Longenhagen
5:33
big Schwarber v Eovaldi atbat with no outs and two guys on
Gust
5:34
Honestly I don't like sounding like a downer but defenses are getting better and smarter, I think the efficiency play will move steadily towards non-BIP results. I do hope I'm wrong about that.

Jared Diamond had a really good article in the WSJ the other day about fewer and fewer doubles, it's just harder to find a gap
I do think infield grounders from speedsters can be tough to defend against though, especially with the shift ban
"Limitations," sorry
Eric A Longenhagen
5:36
Way more doubles down the lines now than in the gaps, I'd wager

excited for like 170ish more days of my outlook on life largely being determined by how my team did that day
Eric A Longenhagen
5:37
As a kid I'd avoid sportscenter when the phils lost
Tomo ohka six shutout innings? No thanks

Some pitching staffs seem to be collecting guys who throw from different angles- could a lineup exhaust the defense into mistakes by having a variety of arraez to murakami to crawford types?
AvatarJon Becker
5:39
That is a super interesting thought experiment that I don't want to give a gut answer to, but I think the "defense" also including "pitching" here makes me think the answer is yes
Gust
5:39
Well that's why you have Bohm in that spot, to pick up your weaker bats like Schwarber and Harper

After a year rambling blindly through the tall grass, it seems Helsley might be back. Looked nasty and commanded the slider today against the Twinkies.
Ben Clemens
5:42
slider command is big for him. Last year might have been partially pitch tipping, but it was partially that he would go long stretches not trusting one of his two pitches
Ben Clemens
5:42
but no question on the stuff, still
Gust
5:42
It was really just the two months for Helsley wasn't it? He was fine with the Cardinals, just came to the Mets and completely imploded
Ben Clemens
5:42
he was down on the cards, but not big down

What is James Fegan's role at Fangraphs? Is he a former scout like the other prospect dudes? It's cool when fans get to chat with the person who sourced and wrote up their system, but it doesn't seem like that is something he's ever done at fangraphs.
Eric A Longenhagen
5:44
James is a full time white sox beat writer for Sox Machine and plays a limited tole as our prospect contributor here. His background is in journalism.

Eric! I was at a Cubs game last Saturday, and Ty Southesene and Eli Lovich both made it in. They didn’t do anything, but I looked them up and both were over-slot guys (Southesene especially). Have you gotten eyes on them? Anything there or just org filler?
Eric A Longenhagen
5:45
Southisene has had a good spring. Looks stronger. Made a nice play at shortstop today. Speedy middle infielder with doubles pop. Lovich is the bigger, more projectable body, slower bat, has kinda plateaued since signing. Armas, Hartshorn, Snell are the three arrow up bats from Cubs this spring imo.

can't say i love having narvaez sac bunting here
AvatarJon Becker
5:48
Yeah I am not a huge fan of bunting when a runner is already in scoring position
5:49
Not a huge fan of bunting in general, but if Mayer had singled I'd get it more

I wanna start writing about baseball. Do you have any suggestions for areas that are undercovered or ways to help break in?
Eric A Longenhagen
5:49
I'd stary by keeping things small and specific. Go to local college and minor league games, get to know some of the folks who are part of or around those programs.

I don't have a question. I'd just like to say everyone who is on this chat is an absolute baseball sicko, and I respect it.

Are the Rays going to take the training wheels off Rasmussen this year?
