Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

Yes, I like Buxton for this reason. Especially in shallow formats where replacement level is high.
1:09
The caveat is you could do this at every position with a bunch of players. It doesn't always shake out according to plan, and there are only so many spots you can build hybrid solutions.

How come when people talk about the next Trout, they never mention the next Trout, Luis Robert?
Brad Johnson
1:09
For me, Robert hasn't demonstrated that preternatural talent for making adjustments.
1:10
That's what sets a guy like Trout apart. It's the physical dominance, but it's also the ability to adapt with rapidity.

Do you think Reilly Greene will start this year with the Tigers?
Brad Johnson
1:10
I think he will make starts this year. I don't think he'll open the season in the Majors.
1:11
Time for me to start wrapping up. This has been a great chat.

How much will the fantasy value of Bassitt/Manaea/Montas decrease if they get traded to a team in a more hitter-friendly ballpark (which most are)?  How much will the fantasy value of Castillo/Gray/Mahle increase if they get traded to a team in a more pitcher-friendly ballpark (which most are)?
Brad Johnson
1:13
I don't think Castillo or Gray are *that* negatively affected by GABP.
1:14
Might save a couple HR on the margins. Castillo always seems to take half a season to get a feel for his stuff so maybe a new regime helps him skip those yearly growing pains.
Mahle has always struggled with dingers at GABP so I'd give him a big bump at most non-AL East destinations.
1:15
I know the talk was the Jays, and I'm less inclined to consider that a win. Yes GABP is a brutal place to pitch, but the NL Central is arguably the friendliest division for a pitcher.

You buying Ke'Bryan?  Possible 20/15/.275 season?
Brad Johnson
1:16
Yea, I like Hayes. I want him after his 140 ADP though.
I have a suspicion his price is going to vary wildly by platform
1:17
Site ADPs generally form either from a bonkers projection system or their experts rankings. Both of which can lead to big divergences on divisive players like Hayes.
Hypothetically, Yahoos experts/projs could say Hayes is 130 while ESPN might have him after pick 200.
Whatever the site sets tends to be very sticky.

In an auction league if you were to go cheap on a position and hope for waiver wire pick-ups.  What position would it be?
Brad Johnson
1:18
Historically, the answer is outfield.
(I'm assuming when you say "position" you're excluding pitchers)
Shortstop is very deep this year too.
1:19
Brandon Crawford, whose 2021 breakout reads as very believable, is the 25th shortstop
He's bracketed by rebound candidate Eugenio Suarez and breakout candidates Oneil Cruz and Gavin Lux.
1:20
By comparison, you're looking at Schoop, Segura, and Enrique Hernandez around the same place at 2B - much weaker.
1:21
Bohm and Wisdom for 3B - also weaker

Nationals pick 1/1 in 2023?  What say you?
Brad Johnson
1:21
Not quite a fantasy question, but I'll pretend you're trying to anticipate who to grab in your FYPD
1:22
Lemme just confirm nothing's shifted since college baseball went live
1:23
Looks like it's still a shrug between Druw Jones, Termarr Johnson, Jace Jung, and Elijah Greene. BA also has Brooks Lee in the mix.

Who do you like better, Jose Abreu or Pete Alonso for 2022?
Brad Johnson
1:24
Alonso. ADP also agrees by several rounds.
I'm having a very hard time getting to Alonso in drafts, I'm just wandering in different directions around pick 45.

Amed Rosario……Do you see him fulfilling star status?
Brad Johnson
1:25
No, I think he's just a core performer.

12 team roto NL only league. Trade offer sent my way. Hoerner Hayes and Woodruff for Pete Alonso and Mark Melancon. We are an auction keeper league so salaries are also in play. I don’t know that Hoerner and Hayes can equal Alonso production? What say you?
Brad Johnson
1:25
Yes, this is a tough one to evaluate because we're really asking which of Woodruff or Alonso you prefer.
Hoerner isn't anything as far as I'm concerned.
1:26
You might as well call that Phil Gosselin
