Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

He probably needs a move to the bullpen tbh
I'm out on both - not considering them at all. That said, they have ample talent to find a new trick.

Hey Brad. Thanks for doing these chats. I have two standard 5 x5 auctions coming up. First one is a 12 team mixed with 13 H &9 P with 5 bench spots. Second is a ten team NL only with 12 H & 8 P with 4 bench spots. What strategies would you use for each?
Brad Johnson
12:32
For the mixed league, aggressively pursue the elite players you believe will perform the best. Grab as many as you can and backfill with affordable players. The 12-team mixed pool is so deep that there are few positions you need to worry about ending up with a dud. Maybe put special focus on Trea Turner as the 2B pool is the thinnest besides C.
12:34
The script flips a bit for NL Only. Certain positions are very thin so the Stars and Scrubs approach becomes very challenging to execute. You still want to wade into the pool for elite talent, even if they seem overpriced. Just pivot to more affordable plays earlier. Spread the wealth.
Hold on folks, I need to don my commissioners gloves for a second...
12:35
Someone picked an ineligible player in our dynasty slow draft
Anyway...

How do ABs play out in the FLA OF?  Are they still looking/will they find more OF help before the season starts? If so from where?
Brad Johnson
12:36
I think they stay in-house now. Tommy Pham might be a decent fit. Especially if they think Jesus Sanchez can handle CF.
12:37
The FanGraphs crew has him listed there, though he has next to no experience out there.
12:38
Avi obviously starts, though he's never reached 600 PA
Soler/Cooper/Sanchez probably bounce between LF and DH
12:39
That leaves Sanchez/De La Cruz/maybe Berti for CF
12:40
Berti has the legs for CF but very limited experience as well. De La Cruz is a corner guy in truth too.
So...I'm talking myself into thinking they go get Pillar, Billy Hamilton, or Gardner.

I already drafted Will Smith - ATL.  Any sleepers I can replace him with now that Jansen is in ATL?
Brad Johnson
12:41
See Stan's question from earlier. I listed a lot of guys.
Because of late-free agency, we haven't heard the usual Best Shape Of His Life stories. Those will start trickling out soon. We'll hear about expected guys adding 3 MPH and can add them at that time.

Brad, Thanks for doing these?  Have you penned any books on Fantasy Baseball and do you have any podcasts?
Brad Johnson
12:42
I have a presently dormant podcast called Juiced Balls. It's silly, I ask industry guys goofy questions.
12:43
I've never quite gotten around to penning a book.
At least not in the fantasy baseball realm. I have some fiction at varying states of completion.
Bones
12:43
Expectations for Story in Boston. Can I count on him for 20 SB’s?
Brad Johnson
12:44
I think you can count on 15 with 20 being reasonably within reach.
Fenway seems a good match for him. I think he'll hit well. Something lilke .270/.340/.500 with 25-30 dingers.

Every is complainging about no defense in Philly, but is tht really any different from last year? Seems like they added two strong bats (with no appriciative loss in defensive skills) and pretty much everything else is intack. plus it sounds lile they are still willing to add in season. What do you put their playoff odds at?
Brad Johnson
12:46
I think it was Jayson Stark who wrote about this today. They might not have solved their defensive woes, but that wasn't going to happen once Matt Chapman proved too pricey.
12:47
They do seem to have improved their club, though they'll have a trial out of the gate when all three of Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suarez, and Zach Eflin probably won't be available.
Luckily, only Eflin seems like he'll miss more than a start.
12:48
With the expanded postseason field, I'd guess around a 50% chance. Let's see what FanGraphs thinks.
12:49
FG thinks they're 4th-best in the NL and 3rd-best in the NL East.

12:49
Thinking of all the pitchers returning from significant injuries (Syndergaard, Verlander, Sale, Glasnow etc) who are you willing to take a fantasy chance on?
Brad Johnson
12:50
Verlander seems to be 100%. I'm all in. Sale is out but not with an arm injury. McCullers is running a little behind. I'd skip Glasnow as he's talking about relieving a bit in September.
Thor... I'm just not convinced he's more than a hard-thrower. We never get a long enough look.
12:51
That was a lot more interesting when he debuted than it is now
James Paxton is on my very-late targets list.
12:52
like over pick 600
Rich
12:52
Wander Franco expectation this season - 15 hr, 100 runs, 15 steals, 75 rbi's?
Brad Johnson
12:53
That's probably a tad light on power and over on steals.
