Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

Brad Johnson

France took a couple seasons to find his footing and a regular role.
Jeremy
12:25
Does DJ play every day for the Yankees?
Brad Johnson
12:25
While he looks like an odd man out at present, I do think they'll find a way to get him in there 4-5 times a week. And that's when the lineup is at full strength. As soon as someone's banged up, he's back to daily play.
12:27
Last season was a weird one for him, but it's going to be tough to keep a guy with a 130 wRC+ on the bench. He's just such a good pure hitter. He's also a different look than everyone else in the Yankees lineup. Diversification is good.
Eli
12:27
Julio Rodriguez ADP is around 225 for roto drafts. Too high or too low?
Brad Johnson
12:27
That's misleading. Consider it about 120 now.
12:28
All the drafters from before March 20 or so would have expected him up around June or later. Even if there was one bullish drafter, they were probably alone.
Around the turn...
12:28
Thanks for all the great content so far! I have pick 14 (and, thus, 15) in a H2H, 14-team points league with .  20-man roster and no keepers. I've basically determined two things -- that I have no idea who's going to be there at 14 so it's a wait and see, and that I think for at least the first six rounds, I'll take a SP and a hitter back to back, so I enter round 7 and 8 with 3 of each. Thoughts on that? Any other suggestions?
Brad Johnson
12:29
It's a sensible approach, especially for a slightly deep H2H format where a strong pitching staff should be rewarded.
12:31
Not much is coming to mind in terms of advice. I like to overload one side of the roster in H2H. Basically pick out 5-6 stats where my team consistently dominates. I usually do that by over-drafting aces.
Hitting stats are more variable week-to-week. Pitchers who shove usually shove just about every time.

12:32
Jays released Bird, do you think he ands somewhere and makes a fantasy impact this season?
Brad Johnson
12:33
By his usually lofty standards, he had a middling spring (.958 OPS)
12:34
The A's could probably stand to upgrade their 1B/DH situation of Eric Thames, Stephen Vogt, Seth Brown, and Jed Lowrie. Bird seems to fit right in there.
12:35
Is there another team with a possible role for him? He could back up Dan Vogelbach in Pittsburgh. I could see the Giants platooning him with Darin Ruf.
I think the short answer is "no."

12:36
What is the over/under on games played for Mondesi?  Have you heard whether the Royals plan to use him at DH often to keep him healthy?
Brad Johnson
12:36
I haven't heard anything about DHing him. And they don't really have the ABs to do so. They're going to have a hard time finding time for Santana, Dozier, Pratto, and Melendez as it is. They're all better hitters than Mondesi.
12:37
I have heard he'll play on a part-time basis initially. That's what they were saying early in the winter. They have the personnel to make that work too. I don't even think that hurts his fantasy value.

12:38
Thanks for the reply regarding the Padres closer/bullpen. I have Lamet, Suarez, and Pierce Johnson, so I'd say I'm well covered. BTW, we're going with SV+HD as a replacement for just SV, so Lamet should have even more value.

12:38
Are there any kinds of relievers to try to target for vulture wins?  8th inning guys, multi-inning guys, first man out of the pen, only from good teams (or bad?), that kind of thing.  Who are your top 3 predictions for wins in relief this season?  Thanks!
Brad Johnson
12:39
Well, Lamet's definitely on my shortlist. I think the Rays might have someone from their group. Ryan Yarbrough's the obvious choice. Tommy Romero is a dark horse.
In general, hunting relief wins is an important part of roto-fantasy, but it should be treated on almost a day-to-day basis.
12:41
We need to see which teams are successfully working in identifiable patterns. Right now, we're blindly throwing darts.
In general, teams that win a lot of games with weak SP will be the best source for reliever wins.
12:42
The Royals might fit the bill. The Brewers have historically had quick hooks for their SP - good as they are.
The Twins. Early-season Mets. Yankees.

12:42
Brad, in a weekly 5x5 league, what would your SP-RP split be with 9 P spots?
Brad Johnson
12:43
I'm probably trying to average 6SP, 3 RP over the season. It depends if you have an IP cap too - some weekly leagues don't.
12:44
If you do have a cap, that will serve to inform the proper split.
Matt
12:44
How many SP vs RP do you carry on your rosters?
Brad Johnson
12:45
I don't approach is as a set thing. I'm very confident I can find both types of pitchers during the season so I let the draft room decide my initial build and adjust from there.
I tend to skew more RP-heavy than the average fantasy player.

12:46
Backup SS while waiting for Luis Uria to heal: Kyle Farmer or Jose Iglesias?  Yes, those are my only two choices.
Brad Johnson
12:46
Oof
Not even like Jorge Mateo?
I really want to find a Door #3
12:47
I guess you can play it like any other decision - what do you need?
Farmer has a mite of pop, a high launch angle, and the home park to luck into some bonus dingers.
12:48
Iglesias is the type of hitter who can spray a 14-for-20 week now and then.
