Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

Which Phillies SPs suffer the most from their historically horrific handicapped (tm) defense?
Brad Johnson
12:48
No question it's Kyle Gibson
He's a terrible fit for that roster.
12:49
I'm a little surprised they didn't find some kind of challenge trade over the winter. I guess they like him? Or nobody else was interested.
12:50
The reason it's Gibson is a simple matter of balls in play. The rest of their arms induce over a strikeout per inning or close to it.
Eflin certainly isn't going to love the defense, but he also has the stuff to adapt by chasing more Ks.
12:51
Suarez is going to allow balls in play too, but he's shown signs of being a contact-management guy with close to 60% GB%
Especially if Stott is playing daily, as he should be, that infield defense isn't terrible.
12:52
Below average, yes. Not terrible.

12:52
Will Cole Sulser close for the Marlins?
Brad Johnson
12:52
I... don't think so. He's definitely worse than Bender and Floro. He's kind of in that Anthony Bass tier of reliever.
12:53
I also suspect the command gains he showed last season have backed up. It's just a hunch. The Orioles have to know they could have gotten more from a healthy Sulser in June if he was replicating his 2021 season.
And I mean JUST Sulser alone.
If they think the command has slipped back to his career norms, then now is the last chance to cash out.
12:54
From the Marlins perspective, when you see a team acquire 2 pitchers for a grab bag of goodies, it usually means they think both have upside and downside. They hope one will stick and will be ecstatic if both work out.

Jazz Chisholm or Jorge Polanco
Brad Johnson
12:55
Another classic "what d'ya need" question.
Polanco is high floor, plus power, decent AVG and run production.
12:56
Chisholm is all ceiling, big wheels, pop, and the potential to completely flop.
12:57
I have a soft spot for Polanco, I've liked him for years. And I'm pretty sure I was the first to call out his power breakout years ago.
I'll say this, I probably prefer Chisholm in shallower formats where the replacements could possibly come close to matching Polanco.
Polanco also seems to be one of those players who doesn't handle minor injuries well.
12:58
Ok folks, this is the last question in the queue so now is the time to get your buzzer beaters submitted!

Aaron Ashby, part of a six-man rotation for MIL or multi-inning reliever until an injury opens up a starting opportunity?
Brad Johnson
12:59
The Brewers beat picked up on the potential for a 6-man rotation late last week. I've not seen an update since then.
1:00
It strikes me as a very Brewers thing to do. They love taking opportunities to reduce overall workloads for their aces.
1:01
So I'll guess the answer is they do it. But I don't have any non-public info on the topic.

Bailey Ober or Joe Ryan for my last roster spot?
Brad Johnson
1:01
I like them both. Basically the same asset class.
1:02
I think I have a slight preference for Ryan. He seems to have a better grasp on using his stuff. They're both very non-traditional in similar ways. Generally, it's not good to have two such pitchers on the same staff.

Regarding Jorge Mateo, my league is NL-only. Unfortunately, someone else snagged Stott.
Brad Johnson
1:03
Ah bummer
I'd probably try to see if Iglesias has some Coors Field magic.
1:04
And that's a wrap, I think. I'll look away a minute in case anyone is furiously typing.

Any 3B flyers to take a chance on

Let's end on this...
1:08
If your league is shallow, I'd try to maybe catch a rebound from Cavan Biggio or Gio Urshela. Jonathan Villar seems like he'll play a lot if you need multi-position SBs.
1:09
Digging deeper, Stott should gain eligibility pretty fast. Some analysts think Ha-Seong Kim deserves a second chance. I'm letting others give it a try.
Hunter Dozier looked sharp all spring.
