Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

Brad Johnson

It looks like rust to me.
His plate discipline in particular has been uncharacteristically poor. It'll likely improve - and his results with it.
12:31
so, yea, small sample stuff

8-team, 5x5, NL-only - Would you start Alex Cobb or Aaron Ashby this week?  Cobb has a start vs. St. Louis but got blasted by WAS Sunday fresh off the IL, while Ashby apparently is not getting a start this week.
Brad Johnson
12:32
The key takeaway from yesterday's Cobb outing was his velocity - still sitting 95
12:33
I'm going right back to him personally.
12:34
As for Cobb or Ashby, I'm still leaning Cobb. I had a similar variation of this in one of my dynasties - one start from Brad Keller or Jalen Beeks. Had them projected for similar IP and W%. Ended up using Keller.

Are you buying in on Ward and Marsh in Anaheim?
Brad Johnson
12:35
Qualified buy for Ward. I don't see support for the wild outcomes we've seen. Looks more like a ~.800 OPS type. It's still a useful skill set and we should absolutely ride the wave.
12:36
Often, these sorts of streaks happen when a hitter adapts to his own scouting report to prey on exactly what opponents are trying to accomplish. Then the opponents adjust, the hitter goes cold or even starts pushing harder for their "hack" to keep working, and eventually they go back to what they were doing in the first place.
12:37
I'm also buying Jo Adell. So much talent in that Angels outfield.

I need to fill a vacancy on my fantasy roster, anad the only available free agents in my league are the two Harolds: Castro and Ramirez.  Are they really twin brothers given their decent BAs, and zilch power and speed? Does one have an advantage over the other in any way?
Brad Johnson
12:38
Ramirez has very specific traits that the Rays can select for to maximum effect. So you see his 2021 and compare it to the small sample success from 2022. Both are the "real" Ramirez. The Rays have simply removed the low quality matchups.
(the .407 BABIP is still high)
12:39
I don't really have Castro's pulse to be honest.
12:40
Statistically, he looks like a peak Niko Goodrum-at-best. Without the steals. Too many whiffs, no discipline, not a ton of truly hard contact though he's hitting enough liners to make it look like he's good. And that's been exactly the book on him for five years.
12:41
If you look at those wRC+s, you can see in small samples he sometimes thrives but any larger sample inevitably turns into an 80 wRC+
(20% below average)
In short, Ramirez is my target for you.

I drafted Max Muncy because he's good for 35 home runs, a very good obp/ops, plus his versatility with 1B and 2B (3B soon to come.)   Is he going to come out of this funk that has him at .136BA with only two home runs?  Coupled with similar results from Ketel Marte, my offense consists of CJ Cron (lucky pick), Manny Machado (keeper) and Jazz Chisholm (hunch early pick).  Do you see Muncy/Marte returning to their norm or is there some underlying issue?  I know Muncy had the severe elbow injury ending 2021.
Brad Johnson
12:43
There are some small red flags in Muncy's statistics, but I'm not ready to panic personally. He might need to make a small adjustment to hit fewer fly balls in deference to the new power meta.
12:45
Marte will be fine. Might be pressing a little. 3 XBH in last 3 games hopefully presages a breakout. Just don't peek at the K rate over those same games!

My fantasy team has floundered with low OBP with Reyes, Garcia, Cruz and Rosario having poor April. In this keeper league I also have Rodgers. Would there be any help suggested in free agents or should I just stay the course. Pitching is firm. Maybe a future closer? I know that category is always changing
Brad Johnson
12:46
I'd need to know more about your waiver wire to offer specific advice, but I'd definitely hunt a middle infield upgrade. The others will likely rebound, but I have grave concerns about Rosario and Rodgers.
12:47
Andres Munoz, Ryan Helsley, and Jhoan Duran are the guys I most want of the current non-closers. Jalen Beeks is fourth choice.
Down to 2 questions
And one of them is...
EddieB
12:47
Baseball fans don't boo the visiting team when they play the infield in to prevent a runner from scoring from third base with less than two outs. Nor do they boo most any other smart defensive maneuver.  Why on earth do home fans boo when the opposing pitcher throws over to first to keep the runner close?
It's ignorant.
Brad Johnson
12:48
It's just a quirky thing that's developed as far as I'm concerned.
The wave is a bunch of BS too, but it makes fans happy.
And I'll take indiscriminately booing pickoffs over booing your own players any day.
12:49
Any buzzer beaters while I answer this last one?
Urias vs Torres
12:49
ROS, who do you favour?
Brad Johnson
12:49
I'm going to assume this is Luis Urias rather than Julio or Ramon.
12:50
Luis was/will be reinstated today
12:51
In the short term, Urias seems the better play if only for consistent starts. Then again, coming back from an injury and on a deep-ish roster, he might also be a part-timer.
His rehab stint went terribly (.148/.258/.185) and he didn't attempt a steal.
12:52
Another thing to consider is how his power will react to the current ball/humidor meta.
He's not exactly a strong dude. We could be looking at a lot of easy fly outs from him.
