Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

Well, from a fantasy perspective, I like the low-key 5-category potential.\
But... I'm not sure how he's going to measure up irl anymore.
12:46
The whiffs have become such a glaring problem. He might just be a Dylan Moore-ish backup

Since you're low on questions, I'll hit you with another.  Would you start Michael Harris or Lane Thomas over Tyler O'Neill.  Seems like a strange question given TON's 2021 and his strong performance since coming of the IL, but his full-season numbers are meh.
Brad Johnson
12:47
I've been pleasantly surprised by Harris. I might start him over O'Neill who's back to what he was pre-2021.
With the baseballs flying again, a homer binge could come at any time, so I'd probably stick with O'Neill.

RE: Lauer vs. Houser, my ERA and WHIP are hurting, so I'll roll with Lauer and avoid the potential of two bad starts by Houser.

Thoughts on Michael Harris vs. Christopher Morel if I'm trying to collect more SBs (5x5, 12-team, mixed, redraft)?
Brad Johnson
12:48
I'd go for Morel. The Braves probably plan to upgrade away from Harris later.
12:49
Morel's also more all-around ready for the league. While Harris is treading water, that's really all he's doing.

How heavily do you weigh Batter vs. Pitcher numbers when making a lineup?
Brad Johnson
12:49
I don't reference BvP data. I used to use it for knuckleballers, but the league is sadly deprived of such pitchers.
12:50
While I do believe some hitters are advantaged against specific pitchers, the sample sizes within BvP data are insufficient to identify them.
12:51
Think of it this way. A single season of data vs LHP is insufficient to tell us anything about if a hitter has platoon splits.
That's like 180 or more PA
Most of these BvP stats are based on 12 PA or spread over a decade.

Your feelings on Oscar Gonzales the OF in Cleveland?
Brad Johnson
12:53
Interesting aggro hitter. Ride the hot streak. Be ready to jump off or sell high
12:54
This profile doesn't usually work if the guy doesn't have extremely loud tools.
He's probably a fourth OF type long term. With some small upside that he just keeps hitting and hitting.
12:55
An example of it not working is Yermin Mercedes. And he actually was much more disciplined.
And toolsy

Melendez in the catcher spot. Worthwhile for the extra ABs for now? How does he profile for the rest of the year. I’m weak at catcher and no good free agents to pick up.
Brad Johnson
12:55
He's probably in the top 3-5 C for projected HR ROS
12:56
He has a good lineup role and isn't a batting average blackhole
In short, he's a top 5-6 C

Ken Giles - I can dismiss his MiLB rehab stats because he's just getting in shape, right?  What are your expectations for him for RoS?
Brad Johnson
12:56
Yes and no
12:57
We still want to see him get to a point where he's hitting his normal velo and snapping off filth-monster breaking balls.
Especially given his inconsistent history.
He's had some long slumps where the breaking ball wasn't at its best, and he was just a terrible hard-thrower
Middle Infield Quagmire
12:57
Diego Castillo or Ehire Adrianza?  The pickings are slim in this 5x5, 12-team, NL-only league.  It's a lesser of two evils, I know.
Brad Johnson
12:58
Squinting at this, I'd try Castillo with an itchy trigger finger for Ji-hwan Bae

12:58
Is Matt Brash (SEA - AAA) droppable in a 5x5 AL-only root league?  Wait until next year's auction?
Brad Johnson
12:58
Yes, he's a reliever now, and their bullpen is crowded enough to ensure he won't be in high leverage work anytime soon.
Clete Boyer
12:58
Who has the more productive future: Sam Huff or Cal Raleigh?
Brad Johnson
12:58
I like Raleigh more
12:59
He's defensively capable. Huff is a poor man's Gary Sanchez... with possibly even worse defense. And more whiffs.
Around the turn...

ROS in a head-to-head redraft league with Ks as -1. Can you rank Schwindel, Pasquantino, Choi, Cooper, Miranda or any other deep sleeper I should be looking at?
